Boys Mile

Results - Heats - steveu's story: Curtis Masters the "In-Between" Race

Bobby Curtis KY 4:09.05

The joy of a great race shows in faces
of both the winner (6 Bobby Curtis)
and runner-up (939 Adam Perkins)

Curtis' kick pays off in the stretch

Bobby Curtis, relying once again on a late charge, scored another big win. The junior from Xavier High School (Louisville, Ky.) actually led the field through the first lap in 61.5, but gave ground as the lead changed hands several times through the next 800 meters. Brendan Fennell (Pearl River, N.Y.), Cameron Schwehr (Colbert, Wash.), David Olson (Colorado Springs, Colo.) all took turns in first place.

end of lap 1

Fennell led through two laps in a relatively slow 2:07.2.

On the third lap, Olson and Adam Perkins (Liberty, Mo.) pushed the pace and spread out the pack. At the bell, Perkins, Olson and Sam Bair (Pittsburgh, Pa.) were closely bunched, and Curtis was in the middle of another pack not far behind.

Olson faded on the backstretch as Curtis turned it on with 100 to go and pulled ahead. He won in 4:09.05. Perkins hung on for second in 4:09.64 and Bair edged Matt Debole (Winston-Salem, N.C.) for third with a 4:11.80 time. Debole’s time was 4:11.80

“I’m pretty fresh because I had my regional meet, my state meet, Golden West and this,” said Curtis. I knew I’d be fresh, but I was a little tired. I took it pretty easy inpractice this week.”

Curtis said he was thinking of staying in front, but moved into lane two to let someone else control the pace. “I didn’t want another Penn Relays,” he explained, referring to the April meet where he took an early lead but wound up eighth in 4:18. “With 350 left I thought I had a chance. With 200 to go, I saw Perkins tying up a little bit. With 100 to go, I pretty much knew I had it.”

Curtis won the indoor mile at the Nike Indoor Championships this year, taking over the lead on the homestretch with a withering kick.

In Section 3 (below), Strongsville OH jr Christopher Kollar (1565) ran down 9 Phil Gaeta VA
and Joaquin Chapa OR in 4:13.30 to grab the 6th and final All-American honor.
