Michelle Carter TX 51-01

Shot Put – When Michael Carter set the boys national shot put record of 81-3 ½ in 1979, some people suggested it mght last forever. And 23 years later, it seems they may be right.

Now there’s another shot champion named Carter.

With dad Michael watching proudly, daughter Michelle, a junior at Ovilla High, blasted out a 51-1 performance to outdistance Elizabeth Podominick, Lakeville, Mn., 50-6 ¼. Kara Northover, Floral Park, NY, was a distant third at 45-1 ½.

The meet record remains 51-11 ¼, the national mark 53-7 ¾. With another year to go, there’s every hope of Michelle Carter getting them both – and joining Dad on the records list.

Like so many others here, the winner hoped for better numbers.

Said Carter, “it was good; it wasn’t my best throw.”
