Clearing at 6-1.5, Chaunte Howard of J.W. North, Riverside, Ca.
equaled the top leap in the nation this year, and easily left the
best of the rest behind.
“Coming in, I was very cautious because I knew there were
a lot of good jumpers and I hadn’t jumped against any of them
this year,” said Howard.
“My training was different this year,” she said. “I
didn’t have a coach or a high jump bar. I did stairs and worked
out by myself. I felt abandoned…but it turned out well.
“I almost cried when I cleared 6-1 (and a quarter) because
my arm hit the bar. I was sure the bar was going to fall down but
I looked up and the crowd started clapping.”
Her understated bottom line: “I was pretty excited.”
Ashley Robbins of Tilden, Texas, went 5-10 ¾ for second,
while Meggie Schuelke, Houston, and Bonnie Meekins of Herndon, Va.
shared third at 5-8 ¾.
