26th Golden South

Highlights
Kierra Foster triple,
Roy Cheney hurdle double
earn MVP honors

by Ricky Quintana

Participation suffered this year because of conflicts with individual
schedules, but it didn’t take away from several stellar performances by
some past champions and some up and coming athletes.
The Mondo track at the Payne Stewart Athletic Complex drew raves from the
participants and definitely lived up to it’s reputation as one, if not, the
fastest track in the state.

Girls 100 Meter High Hurdles

Foster had a great meet, winning MVP honors. After doing yoeman’s work at
the state meet and coming away with no titles, here she turned back Florida
3A State Champ Jenna Utecht and 2A State Champ Shantia Moss to win her first
of 3 individual titles.

1 Kierra Foster 12 FL Palm Beach Lakes High 13.92
2 Shantia Moss 10 Unattached 14.03

Women's 400 Meter Dash

Florida 4A state runner-up Lauren Austin dominated the field getting the
lead early and storming home for the win.

Women's 800 Meter Run

Florida State 4A state 800m champ Morris opted to single in the 800m after
middle distance doubling most of the year.
She led at the 400m in 66. On the backstretch Schommer sprung past her and
took the lead into the final curve.
Morris still had some in the tank and regained the lead into the
homestretch.

Women's 1 Mile Run

[ I missed the start so overall splits are off..... by a lot]
Two state champions and 5 sub 5:10 miler toed the line for this battle.
The lone senior, Pichardo, took the lead through the 400m in 65 and 800m,
2:26.6.
Sophomore Debenedet took the lead after 800m as freshman sensation Schappert
followed closely in second. Debenedet led through 1200m in 3:46, as 3A
state champ Hall began to fade.
At the bell, Kaboord came from third place and began to hammer around the
turn and into the backstretch.
With a 2m lead and the others chasing, Kaboord continued to pour it on, but
could not shake the chasers who all possessed strong kicks. 4A State champ
Pichardo who had used similar tactics in previous championship wins trailed
the others and with 200m to go began to bear down on them. At the top of the
straight, Pichardo swung wide to take the lead as the the field spread
wide to pass the tiring Kaboord. Pichardo kept the lead to the finish.

Boys 110 Meter High Hurdles

Defending Golden South and Georgia state champ Cheney won the MVP honors
after blazing to a 13.88 to defeat Florida 3A state 110m hurdle champ Wise
who also PR’ed.
Cheney: “ I came and won last year so I was coming to win it again. and
defend my title from last year. I was worried about one guy. But I came out to win so I ran my own race and put it out of my mind. I’m undecided [about college]. It’s between Clemson and South Carolina. “

1 Roy Cheney 12 GA Evans High School 13.88
2 Dermillo Wise 12 FL Lakewood High School 13.97

Men's 200 Meter Dash

Marion’s best effort of the day as he ran away from the field in a
sensational time. No wind indicator on this windy day leaves one to wonder
how much it helped.

1 Kevin Marion 11 FL Dixie Hollins High Sc 21.34
2 Nathan Williams 11 FL Columbia High School 21.98

Men's 400 Meter Dash

The 400m was touted as the event of the meet, but late scratches by
defending champ Warner, Palm Bay’s man child, Xavier Carter, who had his
football jamboree the night before, and Ribault’s Mario Hughley left the
field with two top competitiors.
Torrance and Davis ran side by side down the backstretch and into the curve.
On the final curve, Torrance’s remarkable acceleration, opened up an
insurmountable lead that kept growing until he crossed the line.
Torrance:”I heard him coming up up on the side so I kicked into gear,
stayed relaxed and stayed focused on my race instead of tightening up. That
really helped me out a lot.
I was kind of scared ‘cause I thought he might be coming in the end because
last year someone[Wariner] came up on me and beat me with a lean. Jeremy’s
doing good. I’m just trying to catch up with him.
No not really[ on thinking he could defeat Davis].
I was kind of proud of myself because of my time. I haven’t practiced since
state. I just started doing workouts this week. Just trying to get back in
shape. I was proud of myself. It was the surface. This track is wonderful. I can’t wait to go to North Carolina."

1 Jamaal Torrance 12 FL Evans High School 46.56
2 Arthur L Davis 11 AL Williamson High Schoo 48.01

Men's 800 Meter Run

Junior Griffith of Coral Reef took lead at the break, but by 200m, Cooper
assumed control hitting the 400m in 55. 2. He then effortlessly began to
increase his leg turn over and blazed down the backstrecth hitting the 600m
in 1:21.
Rounding the final turn, Copper looked to be running away with a personal
best, but going into the final 100m he slowed as a surprising Griffith began
to make up ground.
It was not enough as Cooper maintained his form all the way to win the
event.

1 Robert Cooper 12 FL Columbia High School 1:54.00
2 Brian Griffith 11 FL Coral Reef High Schoo 1:54.33

Men's 1 Mile Run

The mile had some of Florida’s best and with little known Georgia runner-up
Fassinger in the field, this was one of the strongest fields of the meet.
Rolf Steier had a great performance here last year, and took the lead for
the first 100m. He continued to lead through 400m in 62 as Hassen ,
Williams , Fassinger and Cross followed.
The next 200m saw Hassen move to second and follow Steier closely. Fassinger
moved into third while Cross loomed some 10m behind the leaders.
At 800m, 2:05.7, the top three now separated themselves from Cross. Hassen
moved to Steier’s shoulder on the backstretch and then passed him going into
the curve. Fassinger followed Hassen and moved into first himself out of the
turn. Hassen came back and assumed the lead heading into the bell lap( 3:10)
as Steier began to fall back. 800m national leader Cross was 2m behind
Steier and still a factor as his vaunted kick would be tested over this
longer race.
It was deja vu for Hassen, but this time he took the lead and held Fassinger
at bay winning easily in a PR time. Cross attempted to gain on the leaders
with 200m to go, but a head cold acquired shortly after the state meet two
weeks ago left him weakened and unable to train preoperly. This was his
first hard effort since state.
Fassinger had finished second to Joe Thorne at the Georgia state meet in
4:20. Here, he lopped off 6 seconds to crush his personal best.

1 Steven Hassen 11 FL Vanguard High School 4:13.42
2 Dan Fassinger 12 GA Brookwood High School 4:14.86
3 Paul Cross 11 FL South Plantation High 4:16.15
4 Rolf Steier 12 FL Berkeley Prep School 4:19.25

1 Edwin A Lugo 11 FL Timber Creek High Sch 6:26.23
2 Ryan Truchelut 10 FL Trinity Prep School 6:27.11

Men's Pole Vault

USF bound Jon Miller won the pole vault over the strongest field of any
event. Florida state meet record holder Danny Pellegrino and South
Carolina’s Chase Shealy had far better jumps this season and had Miller
thinking of third place. But after no misses through 15’6”, he was the lone
competitor.
“I was on fire up to there.”
He then went on to set a personal best of 16’0” and narrowly missed his third attempt at 16’6”.
“ I slowed too much over the top part of it. I was over, but my hip came down on the bar.”

1 Jonathan Miller 12 FL Bloomingdale Hi 16'00.00" 4.88m
2 Stephen J Gaddis 11 FL Port St Joe Hig 15'00.00" 4.57m
2 Chase Shealy 11 SC Brookland Cayce 15'00.00" 4.57m

Men's Long Jump

Dixie Hollin’s Kevin Marion had great jumps at the end of the
season and led the nation after his 25’5” jump to win the state title. The
surface at the Payne Stewart Complex and football practice the day before
took a toll on Marion’s mark, but he still came away with the win.
“I didn’t do my personal best, but I did good. I just came from football
practice yesterday. I did the best of my ability. I couldn’t get into my
rhythm. I’m just not used to running on this platform.”
By the end of the meet, Marion had won the long jump, the 200m, run a leg
on the 4x 100m made up of Tampa area All-Stars, and finished third in the
100m.

1 Kevin Marion 11 FL Dixie Hollins H 23'01.00" -0.1
2 Jaydian Miller 11 FL Killian High Sc 22'08.50" -0.1
3 Dermillo Wise 12 FL Lakewood High S 22'05.25" -0.1

Men's Triple Jump

Marshall has aspirations of hitting 50’, but he couldn’t get it going and settled for the win.

1 Brandon Marshall 12 FL Lake Howell Hig 47'09.50" 0.3
2 Jaydian Miller 11 FL Killian High Sc 47'08.50" 0.2
3 Daniel Roper 11 FL Plantation High 47'04.00" NWI
4 David Onwuneme 11 FL Cypress Creek H 47'01.50" 0.2

Men's Shot Put

Wesley Stockbarger had two fouls on his first two throws, the first being
sector foul of near 59’. On his third throw, he used a standing technique
and threw 47’ to qualify for the finals.
He was able to get back in rhythm and despite not surpassing his goal of
60’, he was able to get the win over the Case twins.
Stockbarger: “ I came off really crappy. I threw two fouls to begin with and
that one[the third], I had to stand to get to the finals.
I just came out and my dad kept talking to me and telling me that I could do
it... showing me a few things and I finally popped one out there. 57. It
wasn’t as good as I wanted, but it will have to do.”

1 Westley Stockbarger 10 FL Charlotte High 57'04.25" 17.48m
2 Sam Case 12 FL Bayside High Sc 55'09.00" 16.99m
3 Matt Case 12 FL Bayside High Sc 54'07.00" 16.64m

Men's Discus Throw

Sophomore Stockbarger had thrown 170’s consistently at state, but was
defeated. His series here began near 180’ and he continued to improve launching the discus
out to a PR of 186’03”.
Mid 160’s performer, Theriac was one of his victims as Stockbarger hit his
stride, but fell just short of the family record of 189’ set by his brother,
a professional football player.
Stockbarger:” I changed a few things. I was holding the discus flat instead
of cupped this week and so that helped me a lot. I don’t know. Everything
just went right today.
There were a whole bunch of 178’s and 179’s. My dad said they got the marks
wrong. They should have been farther, but I don’t know about that.
I expected 180’, but not close to 190’.
The technique felt lots, lots better.”

1 Westley Stockbarger 10 FL Charlotte High 186'03.00" 56.77m
