Day 1 - Day 2
Notes and highlights by Jim Spier
Day 2
The weather cooperated again. Though overcast, temperatures were in
the
mid-sixties, there was little wind (all sprints/jumps/hurdles were
legal).
The unfortunate part of the meet was that one of the timing computers
broke
down in the middle of the first event, and every race had to be timed
by
hand.
Boys
4A
Junior Adam Perkins was looking for the US leader in the mile/1600m,
but had
to settle for second-fastest behind Bobby Lockhart's 4:08.35 for
a full mile
earlier this month. Perkins' 4:07.9 converts to about 4:09.3 for
a full
mile. Junior Josh Harper of West Plains was second in 4:12.4. What
a year
for junior class milers! Perkins came back 1 1/2 hours later to
take the 800
in 1:53.5.
U. of Missouri-bound footballer Mario Whitley (Jackson) had a big
day. He
won the 100 in 10.4 (+0.8) and edged junior Domenik Peterson (Jefferson
City)
in the 200 (+0.9), 20.9 to 21.0. Peterson had earlier won the 400
in a big
47.0, winning by 1.6 seconds. He was also second to Whitley in the
100 by
.2.
Glen Wilburn (Hazelwood West) and Brandon Massey (Hazelwood East)
swapped
hurdle victories. Wilburn went 14.0 and 37.8 to Massey's 37.3 and
14.1. The
other Hazelwood, Central, won the 400 in 41.6, .3 over Hazelwood
East.
Hazelwood East was second to Mehlville in the 4x200, 1:27.0 to 1:27.8
3A
Elliott Morant (Ruskin) won the 300h in 37.5, and helped his team
win the
4x200 in 1:27.4
Girls
4A
Junior Markeatha Cooper (Grandview) won the 100h by .8, running
14.0, and had
a big 42.8 win in the 300h. Though they had better passes, Gateway
could
manage only 1:40.4 in the 4x200, after having dipped below 1:40
in the
prelims yesterday. Marquette won the 4x800 in 9:12.7, with West
Plains
second in 9:16.5. Marquette's Amarachi Ukabam had a tougher time
than
expected in the discus, an event in which she is the defender. She
won with
a throw of 156-7, but had to hold off senior Becky Haug (Lees Summit
North)
who had a PR 151-7. Senior Susan Stroud (Farmington) missed the
state record
in the pole vault by 3", jumping 11-9.
Day 1
The weather surprisingly was cooperative. The heavy rains began
Thursday
night and continued through mid-morning. The track dried by noon,
however,
allowing for decent conditions. And the winds were negigible (mostly
slightly negative), resulting in all of the sprint/hurdle/jump marks
being
legal.
Boys
4A
The meet started with a "bang" as West Plains ran a US-leading
7:44.56 in the
4x800. It was a PB by almost 20 seconds! "It was the first
time they all
ran fresh", said coach Scott Womack. Liberty was second in
7:49.31.
Mario Whitney (Jackson) had the fastest qualifier in the 100m,
running 10.63
[-1.1]. It was junior Domenik Peterson (Jefferson City) the leading
400
qualifier, with a solid 47.76. Both won their respective 200m heats,
Whitney
in 21.53 [-0.2] and Peterson at 21.79 [-0.1], setting the stage
for the big
"showdown" tomorrow. West Plains junior Josh Harper had
a quick final 400 in
winning the 3200 (9:15.87).
Girls
3A
The big story was the solo 4:56.41 1600m by senior Ashley Sanders
of Clinton.
She won easily, winning by almost 20 seconds. Soph Anna Koons was
the vault
winner at 11-0.
4A
The highlight of the girls' meet was the fast 1:39.88 in 4x200m
qualifier by
Gateway (St. Louis). The team had 2 "botched" stick passes
and could
possibly go sub-1:38.0 in the finals. They all had the leading qualifier
in
the 4x100 (48.17). The Gateway girls were "all over the place",
boasting the
leading qualifiers in the 100, 200 and 400, and taking second in
the 800m
final. Frosh Kyra Sullivan led in the 100 and 200 (12.03, 24.91).
Junior
Juanita Coleman had the fastest 400 (56.65) and was bested in a
great 800m
battle by Eureka freshman Shannon Leinert, 2:12.36 to 2:12.48. Leinert's
teammate, soph Kasey Kimball, won the 1600m in 5:02.11, .49 better
than
fellow soph Laura Piper of Marquette. Senior Eziamaka Okafor of
Rolla had a
big triple jump, bounding 39-5.75.
