BLACKSBURG VA 1/27/01 -- A week after his historic sub-4 Mile in New York, South Lakes VA sr Alan Webb tried on the 1000 meter distance for record size at the Microtel Virginia Tech Invitational.� He didn't get the record but he came within 0.28 seconds at 2:24.13, good for 3rd best ever among US high school boys.��
A crowded first turn cost Webb the record as he broke free after 200 meters in 29.3, slowest split of the race.� Webb's splits for 200, 400, 500, and 800 meters were:� 29.3, 56.8, 1:11.4, and 1:55.4.� The 800 meter en route time would be #2 in the US on the current DyeStat Elite rankings.� According to Jack Shepard's HIGH SCHOOL TRACK 2001, Webb's performance fits in behind the record of 2:23.85c (George Kersh MS 1987) and 2:242.1d (Miles Irish NY 1983).� Coach Scott Raczko said Webb was ready to go under 2:25 and the race ran true to his expectations.��
Webb pulled along the next five runners to outstanding times of their own:� jr Phil Gaetta VA 2:30.39 US#2, jr Richard Smith VA (Webb's teammate) 2:30.41 US#3, soph Matt DeBole NC 2:31.55 US#5, soph Alex Clayton VA 2:31.94 US#6, and sr Shane Stroup MD 2:32.76.��
The boys 1000 marks were part of a blizzard of top seasonal marks in this huge gathering of 200 schools from VA, WV, TN, NC, SC, GA, MD, PA, NJ, NY,� KY.���

Jerome Mathis, Petersburg VA sr, got a sprint double in 6.37 and 34.03, both US#2 times, led off for his team's 1:30.50 4x200 US#4, and was second in the long jump at 22-11.25.� Brian Ford VA 34.10 2nd in 300 is US#3.
