There is only one "can't miss" contender in this race: Big
Bear CA sr Ryan Hall, one of the triumvirate that has the nation's HS running
community salivating in anticipation of the national finals in Orlando December
9.
Michigan's Dathan Ritzenhein and Virginia's Alan Webb have already
qualified. Now it is up to Hall to join them and set up the greatest
championship showdown in US prep cross country history.
He will be challenged not by any other runner, but by his own
standards. There have been rumors for weeks that Hall would not run in
Foot Locker unless he was "ready," and his early season efforts were
mediocre as he was feeling lethargic side effects of a prescription drug to
treat skin disorders. But then he abandoned the treatment and his body
immediately responded.
First there was a sub-9:00 2-mile workout on a track. Then came
his eye-popping 14:28 in the California Southern Section finals, which broke the
22-year-old 2.98-mile course record at Mt. SAC, a record held by none other than
Jeff Nelson, also holder of the national record for 2 miles on the track.
Ryan started to say he was considering Foot Locker after all. The
West region is also run at Mt. SAC, with an extra loop on the stadium track
extending the distance to 5000 meters.
