For starters, you could take the top returning runners from last year's Foot
Locker Northeast regional as presumptive favorites to qualify for this year's
national finals. Here they are:

These are all worthy runners, but this list leaves out three of
the hottest runners in the Northeast this year: Julia Pudlin of MA,
Natasha Roetter of MA, and Erin Donohue of NJ. Pudlin started
breaking PA course records from the start of this season and then went out of
state to earn noteworthy honors in winning the Salesianum DE and Manhattan NY
meets (the latter over Donohue with a surge in the last 30 meters) and finishing
3rd to the great Alicia Craig of Wyoming at the Great American. Pudlin has
the fastest 5k time in the country this year at 17:14. Roetter rang
up two of the top 10 5k times in the nation this year in winning the Brown Inv
and the MA Coaches Inv. Donohue, one of the most versatile
female athletes in the country (soccer, basketball, javelin, and 1999 national
mile champion) dominated running-rich New Jersey this season and must be itching
to make up for stretch collapses in the last two Foot Locker Northeast regionals.
Defending champion Melissa Donais MA will have her work cut out
to repeat, but then again she wasn't expected to win last year either.
