Van Rose's SM Northwest bunch takes another double.

6A and 5A held at Rimrock Farm, Lawerence KS.

Temps in the 60's, with light drizzle and fog. Course was muddy after a week of rain, slowing times considerably. A number of runners fell. However, Bob Timmons (former KU cross country coach and owner of the farm) must be given credit for making the course even runnable with hours of hard work.

6A Boys: Shawnee Mission Northwest cruised to their seventh straight state crown. Led by five top twenty performers (Ryan Hopper 3rd, Calvin Locklear 6th, Matt Quigley 11th, Jason Pugh 16th, and Tyler Baker 19th), the Cougars ran to an easy 42-96 win over runner-up Olathe South. Maize placed third with 108, followed by Washburn Rural at 122 and Leavenworth at 135. Lawrence High, ranked #2 coming into the meet fell to ninth.

Individually Scott Loftin (Blue Valley North) blew the field apart in running to a 15:53 victory. Loftin took the lead early and simply ran away from the field. Loftin's pace was so strong he even passed the lead vehicle as it slowed to navigate Suicide Turn, a muddy steep downhill, leaving it to guide the chase pack. Leavenworth's Luke Beford was second at 16:24, followed by Ryan Hopper (SMNW) 16:26, Erinc Sornson (Maize) 16:33 and Matt Swedlund (Topeka Washburn Rural) 16:34.

6A Girls: Shawnee Mission Northwest once again turned an unexpected close race into a runaway, scoring 62 to defeat Blue Valley Northwest (93), Olathe South (93) and Lawrence Free State 99. Key to the Cougars victory were their #4 and #5 runners Christina Scott and LeAnne Shirley. With team scores fairly even through the first three runners Scott placed 19th in team scoring to BVNW's 26, Olathe South's 32 and Free State's 27, while Shirley's 21st closed out the victory (BVNW's fifth runner scored 38, Olathe South 34, Free State 36). The top seven teams were all from a 40 mile radius covering Johnson and Douglas Counties in eastern Kansas. Individually the race shook out over the hills to a duel between freshman. Hutchinson's Meagan Bond led Olathe South's Alysha Galbraith by about 20 yards as the field climbed the steep Billy Mills Ascent, about 800 yards from the finish. But Galbraith closed down on Bonds along the Jim Ryun Skyline in the next 400, then sprinted past with about 50 yards left, to win 12:20 to 12:24. Leavenworth's Amy Hastings followed in 12:44, with Harper McConnell (Manhattan) 12:46, and Elle Pishny (Blue Valley) 12:47 following.
