Van Rose's Shawnee Mission Northwest team, over 100 runners strong, dominated the team races at the championships of the Sunflower League, Kansas's biggest and strongest conference, located in the suburban KC area, plus Lawrence schools.
Shawnee Mission Northwest won both varsity races, both JV races, and also swept the freshman-sophomore races.
In the varsity boys race, SMNW (#2 6A) upended #1 Lawrence 35-42. Olathe South (#3 6A) , running without their #1 man placed third at 85. Leavenworth (#6 6A) was fourth at 147 ahead of #4 Free State (156). Northwest packed six runners in the top 22 to defeat Lawrence, who packed six in the top 20. Individually Calvin Locklear (SMNW) pulled away from a large pack in the second mile to defeat Lawrence's Dylan McClain and Leavenworth's Luke Belford.
In the girls varsity race the top 5 of the state's top 8 ranked teams dueled. #3 SMNW (46) winning. #2 Free State (54), #1 Olathe South (75), #4 SM East (118), unranked Lawrence 147, and #8 Olathe East 149 following.
Olathe South freshman Alysha Galbraith pulled away from defending champ Amy Hastings (Leavenworth) with 3/4 of a mile to go win in approximately 11:35 over the rolling course (a timing error rendered official times unreadable). Olathe South's Amy Gouchner placed third.
Sadly, a timing error eliminated all official times. I've included an approximation of the winning times, but they arn't official. Too busy watching my own runners.
