Topeka Seaman Invitational 9/23: In typical KS weather (90 and
hot Friday, 50 and raining with a cold north wind on Saturday race day),
Lawrence Free State's girls dominated a battle of state ranked teams. Free
State (#4 6A) placed four runners in the top six to score 29 points, while
Emporia (80) suprised Olathe East (#8 6A) 97 for second. Mission Valley,
ranked #3 in 3A placed sixth against larger schools. Amy Hastings
(Leavenworth) followed up her big KU Invitational victory with a front
running 12:15 over the muddy two mile course.
Ken Swedlund won the boys individual title in 16;26 (5k) to lead his
Wasburn Rural team (55 points, #5 6A) to a win over Emporia (64, #6 6A),
Topeka Seaman 90 (#4 5A), Leavenworth 91 (#6 6A) and Lawrence Free State
100 (#4 6A).
Lyons Invitational 9/26: A match-up of top ranked small class
schools in the boys race resulted in Hutchinson Trinity (#1 1A-2A) and
unranked Lindsborg-Smoky Valley tying at 57 for the team title.
Hoisington, top ranked in 3A placed third with 80. Chapman placed fourth
at 87.
Hoisington's girls (#4 3A) won their title at 31 points, over Ellsworth
at 45.
Junction City Invitational 9/26: Hays High's boys (#5 5A)
defeated Junction City 49-53 for the team title. Salina Central (#7 5A)
was third at 71. Hays freshman Scott Rome won his first individual title
in 17:35 over a rugged 5k course generally considered one of the state's
toughest.
Manhattan's girls (#7 6A) won the team title 30-38 over Hays High.
Manhattan's Harper McConnell won the individual title 12:36 over Hays
Janell Weber at 13:08;
Pittsburg Invitational 9/28: Pittsburg's girls saw their
undefeated season come to an end after being edged by arch-rival
Coffeyville 88-93. Labette County was third at 96. Michelle Bremmer led
her Coffeyville team to victory, winning the individual race at 11:33 over
a flat 2 mile course. Kelly O' Toole (Joplin MO) 11:37 and Kelly Fanning
(Seneca MO) 11:39 placed 2-3
Charlie Bromley (Carl Junction MO) ran 15:00 for a flat 5K (described
as 150 yards short) to win over Joplin's Andrew Beard (15:33). Carl
Junction won the team title 58, over Nevada MO 123 and Caney Valley 127 in
the 15 team meet featuring both Kansas and Missouri schools.
