Saratoga Springs NY wins 3-way duel with Campbell County WY and Bingham UT;
Alicia Craig WY wins with ease, with Megan Kaltenbach CO and Julia Pudlin PA a surprising
2nd and 3rd.
Campbell County WY sr Alicia Craig picked up right where she left off last June, when she swept the mile at the Golden West Invitational and the Foot Locker Outdoor championship. Arvada CO soph Megan Kaltenbach stayed with the winner through a mile in 5:56 and for a good while after that. But Craig broke away before 2 miles (12:17) and won as she pleased in 17:30. Craig finished looking as if she could go another mile, even though she was not at full strength after a recent bout with flu.
Kaltenbach, a soccer player who practices cross country only 3 days a week, finished second in 18:07 for an impressive debut on the national stage after becoming the Colorado champion as a freshman. Another statement was made by Julia Pudlin, Baldwin PA jr, who finished third in 18:10, confirming her recent swift outings in PA. Pudlin surprised herself. "I was hoping to be in the top 20."
Next was Danielle Coon 18:13, who led Saratoga Springs NY to the team championship which it lost as the favorite last year in the inaugural Great American. Campbell County had four runners home before Saratoga's third, but Saratoga's 3-4-5 runners showed up together in the low 20s and Campbell County had to wait until 49th (59th overall) for its fifth scorer. Final score: Saratoga Springs 81, Campbell County 87.
A very close third with 90 points was Bingham S. Jordan UT, defending Great American and national champion. Bingham was solid with twins Jackie and Laura Zeigle 5th and 11th, but they could not match their 1999 blitz of the Great American field.
Saratoga Springs, ranked third in the country before the meet in The Harrier, made a strong case for Number One with this victory over 6 other teams ranked in the top 10. The current #1, Rockford MI, will not face any top 10 teams because of their state association's travel restrictions.
San Lorenzo Valley CA, US#2 before the race, finished 5th as Alejandra Barrientos struggled in her first race since suffering a stress fracture last June. A prime candidate to win the race if fit, Barrientos finished 28th in 19:09 and looked as if it was an achievement to finish at all. "I almost didn't," said Ale, her face flushed a bright red from the effort on a muggy, sunny afternoon. She has been training mostly in the swimming pool, with running limited to 3 miles every fifth day.
Another team affected by a stress fracture was Colonie NY, which won the New York Federation title last year over Saratoga Springs. Their #1 runner, Katie Twarog, is not expected to return until next week.
California claimed spots 6 to 8 with Head-Royce jr Clara Horowitz 18:19, Montgomery sr Sara Bei 18:21, and Newport Harbor sr Amber Steen. After Salt Lake City UT sr Phoebe Ko 18:30 came in 9th, Californian state 1600 meter champion Jenny Aldridge 18:36 rounded out the top 10 finishers.
