Alan Webb, South Lakes Reston VA sr, showed no sign of rustiness in his first big race since ending his 2000 outdoor campaign short of the big national meets after a strenuous assault on the magic 4-minute mile barrier.
After hanging with a big pack through a 4:49 first mile, Webb simply said, "See ya later," and ran off in another gear. He opened a big gap through two miles in 9:38. In contrast to last year's furious stretch duel with Ricky Brookshire, the only suspense left today was whether Webb would break 15 minutes. He did, by a split second. Webb's competition-free time was 4 seconds faster than last year's Great American victory, so he would appear to be in superb shape. Webb said the course was several seconds slower this year.
Roy UT sr Seth Pilkington 15:11 was a steady runner-up. The Jefferson twins from Atlantic FL both finished in the top 6 -- John 15:16 in 3rd and Sean 15:19 in 6th.
Mountain View UT's aces -- Chandler Goodwin and Dustin Bybee -- took 4th and 5th, only 0.4 seconds apart, leading their team to victory. Mountain View, ranked US#2 in The Harrier rankings, toppled US#1 and Great American defending champion The Woodlands TX with 146 points.
It took 100 finishers to determine the next few team positions. US#3 Poly Long Beach CA 176 was second. Then came unranked local favorite North Mecklenburg NC 190 led by Stephen Haas 15:39, 13th overall. Flathead MT 192, led by David Vidal 15:26 in 8th overall, was fourth, nosing out The Woodlands by one point.
North Mecklenburg's showing surprised the experts, but not their coach, Brad Herbster. "These guys are capable of being at the top," Herbster told the Charlotte Observer's Brett Honeycutt.
