AAA Finals - Day 2
Rickey Harris and Sheena Johnson hotter than the weather -
a surprising loss by Alan Webb -
a surprising boys title for Bethel

RICHMOND -- Hot weather may have drained most of those competing in the
Virginia Group AAA State Track & Field Championships, but for Rickey
Harris and Sheena Johnson, it was all about hot times.
With the mercury pressing 100 degrees Saturday at Sports Backers
Stadium - and with a persistent head-wind inflating times in the shorter
races - Harris and Johnson, the Track & Field News indoor athletes
of the year, proved they can compete no matter what the conditions.
Harris upstaged what was shaping up to be a coming-out party by South
Lakes and Alan Webb. A Webb-less 3,200-meter relay won the state title
before Webb added an easy win in the 1,600, and a first ever South Lakes
team title still seemed possible. But a number of tactical mistakes cost
Webb in the 800, and a stunned near-capacity crowd watched as he finished
second to Woodside's Curtis Parker (1:53.81).
Harris, meanwhile, was on fire, though he seemed to be the only one at
the stadium not sweating. The Florida-bound senior from Centreville warmed
up with a meet-record run in the 110 hurdles (13.50 - tying him for U.S.
No. 1 - into the wind), then overpowered the field in a 400 race that
Foot Locker Outdoor nationals meet director Mike Byrnes called "the
best yet in the country."
No wonder. Harris finished in 46.21 - U.S. No. 1 - followed by
Bethel's Domonick Richmond (47.02), Atlee's Brian Ford (47.54) and
Oscar Smith's Cy Williams (47.55).
Harris had two p.r.'s to his credit, and for good measure he added a
win in the 200 (21.35).
"I was loose, the track feels great - it absorbs a lot of the
shock so the muscles don't have to," said Harris, hardly breathing
after his 3-for-3 performance. "Today, this is a really good day. You
know, you have a lot of bad days, and this season, I've had a lot of bad
days. But this meet [made it] all worth it. I'm very happy with my
performance."
Coming off a weekend in which he was disqualified in the preliminaries
of the Northern Region 400 for losing his temper (at himself) at the
finish line, Harris showed his true colors in a meet in which his times
proved that he may be the best prep sprinter - never mind the hurdles
- in the country.
"I knew Ricky was going to run very fast," said Henrico
junior Kevin Watson, who finished second in the high hurdles with a
personal-best 14.26. "I just wish him the best of luck. I hope he can
keep it up."
Harris will look to do so next weekend in Raleigh, and the quality of
his performances in Richmond had him looking forward to the immediate
future.
"These things combined will all make me a very good 400-meter
hurdler," said Harris, who is hoping to qualify for next month's
U.S. Olympic Trials. "So I'm very happy with these times, because
running the No. 1 time in the nation in the 400 will equal a very fast
400-meter hurdle time."
Harris is optimistic about his chances to equal or better the Trials
qualifying mark (50.20) next weekend.
"I should run a very fast time," he said. "I feel great
Everything is going very well."
Gar-Field's Johnson dominated the girls competition, nearly
out-pointing the second-place team all by herself.
After winning Friday's long jump (20-2), Johnson added victories in
the triple jump (40-7) and both hurdle events (13.82 and a meet-record
40.94), joining her with Gar-Field's Paula Girven, a member of the U.S.
Olympic Team in 1976, as the only female athlete in state meet history to
win four events. A tight loss to Bethel junior Ara Towns in the 100 (11.81
to 11.87) prevented Johnson from becoming the first athlete, boy or girl,
to win five titles in one meet.
Still, the UCLA-bound senior did end her high school career undefeated
in the 300 hurdles, and she equaled Girven's career total of nine state
outdoor titles, most by a Virginia girl.

performances and scored higher than expected.
Event (with meet record)

Long jump* (25-4) - 1. Rico Lloyd (Pot) 24-1; 2. Dexter
Faulk (Wood) 23-10; 3. Chris Clifton (DC) 23-8; 4. Willie Smith (DC)

The Virginia Tech-bound Fludd p.r.'d by more than two feet and moved
to No. 7 in the U.S. Still, Fludd never found the board, and his last four
jumps, from his takeoff, were close to or beyond 50 feet (49-, 48-9,
48-10 and 49-11). Fludd's last jump was right at 51.
High jump* (7-1) - 1. Quentin Matthews (DC) 7-; 2. Marlin

Morris (ECG) 14-0; 6. Val Osipenko (Atl) 13-6; 7. Brian Rafter (GB) 13-6;
8. Matt Eluk (OL) 13-0.
A steady cross-wind threw off many of the vaulters. Sullivan won it on
a jumpoff, and nearly gave Centreville a two-person team win.
3,200-meter relay (7:46.83) - 1. South Lakes 7:49.85; 2.
Midlothian 7:50.71; 3. Lake Braddock 7:52.69; 4. West Potomac 7:54.58; 5.
T.C. Williams 7:58.98; 6. Menchville 8:01.93; 7. Kempsville 8:04.05; 8.
L.C. Bird (Josue Castro, Jacob Parsons, Billy Barrett, Colin Richards)
8:07.68.
Austin Smith, who would later win the 3,200, gave Midlothian the lead
with a 1:55.5 third leg - some six seconds faster than he'd ever
previously covered the distance. But South Lakes sophomore Richard Smith
came back with an even better anchor. The splits, from the watch of a
wildly enthusiastic Alan Webb: Junior Brendan Leahy - 1:59.6; junior
Kanda Karmo - 1:56.9; junior Yonathan Kebede - 1:58.8; sophomore
Richard Smith 1:54.1.
100 hurdles (13.67) - 1. Rickey Harris (Cen) 13.50 (meet
record, previous record 13.67, Calvin Holmes, Denbigh 1984); 2. **Kevin
Watson (Hen) 14.26; 3. B.J. Hancock (ECG) 14.47; 4. Gemayel Hazard (Bet)
14.51; 5. Anthony Riddick (DC) 14.62; 6. Nduweze Anyanwu (TCW) 14.77; 7.
Alton Jordan (Her) 14.91; 8. Jason Williams (Ann) 15.16.
Harris made it seem as if he was running a much shorter distance than
the others. And then there was that breeze
100 (10.51) - 1. Rico Lloyd (Pot) 10.55; 2. Omar McDaniel
(Bay) 10.65; 3. Byron Dunham (BP) 10.66; 4. Jerome Mathis (Pet) 10.89; 5.
Michael Johnson (Her) 10.90; 6. Dexter Faulk (Wood) 10.96; 7. Charles
Corner (WF) 10.99; 8. Jimmy Terry (DC) 11.03.
Lloyd almost got the record, and his time ties him for No. 3 in the
country. The wind was still blowing in the wrong direction.
1,600 (4:05.38) - 1. Alan Webb (SL) 4:19.77; 2. Bill
Meador (CS) 4:22.13; 3. Andrew Dunnum (JWR) 4:22.52; 4. Ahmed Qureshi (JR)
4:24.49; 5. Erich Heckel (WB) 4:24.91; 6. Jason Lewis (Pot) 4:25.06; 7.
Graham Kearney (DSF) 4:25.31; 8. Edward Herbert (FWC) 4:27.53.
Webb went out in 62.3-2:03.7, perhaps thinking of the record, before he
shut it down.
400 relay (41.36) - 1. Deep Creek 42.01; 2. Heritage
42.04; 3. Bethel 42.14; 4. Brook Point 42.23; 5. West Potomac 42.81; 6.
L.C. Bird 42.93; 7. Annandale 42.94; 8. T.C. Williams 43.07.
400 (46.25) - 1. Rickey Harris (Cen) 46.21 (meet record,
previous record 46.25, Kerry Wooden, Warwick, 1987); 2. Domonick Richmond
(Beth) 47.02; 3. Brian Ford (Atl) 47.54; 4. Cy Williams (OS) 47.55; 5.
Anthony Pelham (Her) 48.59; 6. Donte Lucas (LT) 48.73; 7. Eric Sidney
(Her) 49.03; 8. Jerry Harris (WP) 50.21.
Ford took the field out in lane 7, on the way to a huge p.r. (previous
best: 48.20, a p.r. set the week before). Richmond, also a junior, also
p.r.'d. Harris did too, and he looked very, very smooth.
300 hurdles (36.50) - 1. Gemayel Hazard (Beth) 37.97; 2. B.J.
Hancock (ECG) 38.19; 3. Jason Faulk (Lake) 38.75; 4. Jon Morgan (NS)
39.94; 5. Allieu Siesay (Ann) 40.07; 6. Kevin Watson (Hen) 40.24.
Hazard won what amounted to a war of attrition. Hurdles flew: Albemarle
junior Zach Drozda stumbled badly and was subsequently disqualified after
qualifying for the finals at 39.64, and Booker T. Washington senior Khalif
Smith, the No. 2 qualifier at 38.74, never finished.
800 (1:49.61) - 1. Curtis Parker (Wood) 1:53.81; 2. Alan Webb
(SL) 1:54.30; 3. Harun Iman (Wake) 1:54.78; 4. James Small (Mcl) 1:55.08;
5. Jason Lewis (Pot) 1:57.58; 6. Tim Oliver (LB) 1:57.63; 7. Terrance
Arnold (Mench) 1:57.91; 8. Dylan Mabin (FHS) 1:58.09.
This will amount to nothing more that a valuable lesson for Webb, who
never got free during a first lap that went through in 58 seconds, then
found himself boxed in on several different occasions during a bumpy
second quarter. Parker ran free up front while Webb wrestled with the
pack, and by the time Webb cleared himself coming off the home turn he was
too far behind to make up the difference.
"He got boxed in a couple of times, he didn't respond at the
right times," said South Lakes coach Scott Raczko. "I think he
may have wanted to go out a little faster than that He can run 1:54,
1:55 on the tail end of workout."
200 (20.90) - 1. Rickey Harris (Cen) 21.35; 2. Rico Lloyd (Pot)
21.57; 3. Jerome Mathis (Pet) 21.92; 4. Omar McDaniel (Bay) 22.21; 5.
Brian Ford (Atl) 22.26; 6. Byron Dunham (BP) 22.35; 7. Dwayne Kindrick
(Beth) 22.39; 8. Clifton James (HS) 22.57.
Lloyd, who came into the meet with a 21.28 clocking, was formidable
competition, but only the wind kept Harris from getting a third p.r.
(21.22) and possibly a third meet record..
3,200 (9:01.40) - 1. Austin Smith (Mid) 9:32.88; 2. Matt
Keally (OL) 9:35.51; 3. David Silver (TJ) 9:37.42; 4. Matt Maline (Oak)
9:41.81; 5. L.A. Snead (JWR) 9:51.65; 6. Anthony D'Amato (Mid) 9:54.33;
7. Jared Prunty (Sher) 9:55.38; 8. James Thayer (Pot) 9:56.37.
Smith, who fell down in last week's Central Region 1,600 and still
came back to win and set a p.r. (4:20.26), almost fell again. But Smith,
who came in the leading time (9:19.66) put aside Keally and Silver and the
sweltering heat with a 67.0 final quarter.
1,600 relay (2:14.15) - 1. Heritage 3:14.66; 2. Bethel 3:17.87;
3. West Potomac 3:19.37; 4. Potomac 3:19.37; 5. South Lakes 3:21.91; 6.
Atlee (Brett O'Kelly, Steven Bryan, Nick Robinson, Brian Ford) 3:22.20;
7. Menchville 3:22.95; 8. Brook Point 3:24.27.
No surprises from one of the best foursome's in the country.

3,200-meter relay (9:10.29) - 1. Oakton 9:22.32; 2. T.J.-Alexandria
9:22.89; 3. Bethel 9:23.62; 4. West Springfield 9:31.77; 5. Lake Braddock
9:33.47; 6. Langley 9:35.44; 7. C.D. Hylton 9:37.60; 8. Hayfield 9:38.14.
T.J. in third trailed Bethel, the leader, by 8 seconds when Kelley
Otstott began her anchor leg. Otstott ran a 2:11.9, but Oakton anchor
Keira Carlstrom, caught and passed by Otstott with a lap remaining, went
with her, passed her back on the homestretch and held on for the win.

100 (11.73) - 1. Ara Towns (Beth) 11.81; 2. Sheena Johnson (Gar)
11.87; 3. Asia Carroll (Beth) 11.99; 4. Alyssa Aiken (Chant) 12.04; 5.

(Alb) 12.47; 8. Terri Davenport (CDH) 12.60.
The Bethel girls were up for this race, and it looked like Towns had
Johnson the whole way.
1,600 (4:50.32) - 1. Nikeya Green (Hay) 5:03.49; 2. Dionne
Evans (Gar) 5:06.49; 3. Lauren Goldsmith (CS) 5:08.93; 4. Monika Schleier-Smith
(TJ) 5:11.89; 5. Blair Myers (DSF) 5:14.00; 6. Colleen Connell (BP)
5:15.93; 7. Elizabeth Bugg (DSF) 5:19.34; 8. Sam Ference (JWR) 5:19.88.
Green took it easy, saving it for the 800, where she would need it.
400 relay (45.79) - 1. Bethel 46.74; 2. Salem 47.37; 3.
Menchville 47.57; 4. Oakton 47.92; 5. L.C. Bird 48.53; 6. Woodbridge
48.95; 7. Atlee 48.97; 8. T.C. Williams 48.97.
400 (53.45) - 1. Alyssa Aiken (Chant) 53.83; 2. Trenace Elliot
(WB) 54.41; 3. Vakara Forrest (GHS) 55.80; 4. Avis Strobridge (Kec) 56.68;
5. Cheri Manning (JRT) 56.70; 6. Jennifer Claud (Hal) 57.47; 7. Courtney
Tolbert (LCB) 57.59; 8. Zakiya Ingraham (TD) 57.95.
Aiken almost got her own meet record, and considering the heat and her
race load (100-400-200), said something about her toughness.
300 hurdles (41.62) - 1. Sheena Johnson (Gar) 40.94 (meet
record, previous record 41.62, Shontell Powell, Ferguson, 1996); 2. Janine
Jones (Mench) 42.07; 3. Kellie Wells (JR) 43.94; 4. Ayanna Alexander (Mcl)
44.05; 5. Maurika Quarles (OP) 44.72; 6. Vrica Twine (GB) 45.08; 7. Lauren
Taylor (WB) 45.31; 8. Keosha Sanders (BP) 51.74.
No doubts here, though Jones and Wells both ran well.
800 (2:10.44) - 1. Nikeya Green (Hay) 2:09.30 (meet
record, previous record 2:10.44, Sharon O'Connor, Mount Vernon, 1998);
2. Leslie Treherne (WB) 2:09.38; 3. Kelley Otstott (TJ) 2:11.38; 4. Nicole
Cook (Pet) 2:12.94; 5. Lauren Goldsmith (CS) 2:15.56; 6. Carin Miller
(Chant) 2:15.57; 7. Leslie Schultz (Lang) 2:15.68; 8. Lea Nikeita (GWD)
2:16.16.
This race was expected to be close, but not because of Treherne. The
