2000 Outdoor State Meet

  • AAA Finals 6/10 at Richmond VA
    • Day 2 - Rickey and Sheena are hotter than the weather - Ben Ackerly's report
    • Day 2 - Pearl Watts' report
    • Day 1 Results - Sheena Johnson opens with 20-2.5 PR first attempt in the long jump, which figured to be the toughest of five events she is entered.  The UCLA-bound star is top seeded in four other events: 100H, 300H, 100m, and TJ.  She could become the first Virginia athlete ever to win five events in the state meet.  Also:  Nikeya Green gets meet record 2:10.12 in prelims; Rico Lloyd 24-1.25; Quentin Mathews 7-0.25; Rickey Harris and Alan Webb advance easily.

    • Webb Watch Virginia state meet managers offered to start the 1600 at the mile mark and time both distances for a sub-4 minute try by Alan Webb, but Webb declined.  Webb will likely run the 800, 1600, and 4x800, making it unlikely that Webb will  run the mile at the Foot Locker Outdoor championships in Raleigh June 16-17.  Coach Scott Raczko said the next target for a 4-minute mile by Webb will be summer meets with older runners: the Prefontaine in OR or the Maine Distance carnival. • Central Region
Midlothian VA jr Austin Smith  won the Central Region 1600 in 4:20.26, but that is only half the story.  Leading in the stretch just before the bell lap, Smith tangled with another runner and fell.  Six runners went by before he got up.  But he dug in and caught everyone in a 60.8 second final lap for a PR.   Could he challenge Alan Webb in the state meet June 10?
