Boys - Hutchinson,
led by a 7:55.6 4 x 800 win, outscored Shawnee Mission South
for the team title. Third place Blue Valley North was led by Scott
Loftin's distance triple wins (1:55.4/ 4:17.3/ 9:23.57). Larry
German of Wichita Heights won the LJ in 24-1.75, but
pulled and went to the track in his 200 heat. German gamely
got up and limped to the finish line, bringing the crowd to
it's feet in his final performance at Cessna Stadium. Field
events were highlighted by Danny Bartlett's (SM North)
207-0 JT win.

Girls - Leavenworth
once again used it's unparalleled depth to win it's fifth
straight team title. Individually Janell Wright (Topeka
High) and Sally Curtis (Manhattan) highlighted the
meet. Curtis ran a state record 42.70 300H, won the 200 at
24.80, then placed second to Wright's state record 100H win
(14.18 to 14.25). Wright also won the HJ at 5-9. Allison
Bessler (Olathe East) stunned the 400 field with a 58.32
win in only her fourth 400 ever. Bessler also led off East's
9:42.6 4 x 800 runner-up with a 2:21. Lawrence Free State
took the 4 x 800 in 9:37.4. Danyelle Marshall (Blue
Valley North) won the LJ at 19-1.5, and Amanda Pape
(Olathe South) completed her career with a 5:05.1/ 10:47.35
double in the distances, ahead of Amy Hastings (Leavenworth
11:05.43) and Kramer (Maize) 5:09.4

Boys
- Liberal continues to dominate Kansas 5A track with their
10th straight win. Among Liberal's six individual titles, Carlos
Alsup led the way with 11.01 (10.88 heat)/ 21.87/ 45-8.5
100-200-TJ wins. Ty Williams and Marcus James thrilled
the crowd with 15-6, 15-0 vaults for a Liberal 1-2. Gilford
Livingston won a hurdle double in 14.09/ 38.87, the 110's
over Lance Hein (Hays) 14.32. Other non-Liberal
highlights included an outstanding 58-.5 SP by Dusty
Terflinger (Pittsburg), winning by almost six feet. Great
Bend's 4 x 800 gave retiring coach Jack Bowman (40
years in education) a 7:59.8 going-away championship. Nathan
Wadsworth (Andover) used late kicks for a 4:28.11/ 9:46.46
double. Matt Stockemer (Wichita Carroll) edged Aaron
Davis (Buhler) in the 800, 1:56.7's for both. Kendall
Betts (Goddard) pulled away late in the 400 (49.39) for a
big win.

Girls
- Liberal won 8 events to take a seventh straight
5A girls championship. Leading the way were Tennessee signee Denita
Miller with a 5-6 HJ/ 145-4 JT/ 134-0 DT triple, and Amy
Ranker with a 25.76/ 57.66 long sprint double. Liberal
also won had a 50.23/ 4:01.9 relay double, and added a 45.68
300H win from Tasha Gallegos. Other highlights included
a dominating 9:38.8 4 x 800 win from Wichita Bishop Carroll.
Last year Carroll set a state record at 9:31.29. Angela
Buckner (Wichita Kaupan-Mt. Carmel) won a 43--4.25 SP. Sheila
Burrell (Topeka Seaman) won the 1600 in 5:17.4, then
placed second to Sarah Viveros (Shawnee Mission Bishop
Miege) in a hot half, Viveros 2;16.8 to Burrell's 2:18.0

Boys
- Ottawa won the boys title, led by Errol Moloto's
400 win (49.29). Moloto also anchored Ottawa's 4 x 400 to the
state title. Dylan Schmidt (Andale) vaulted 15-7. Edward
Velardez (Ulysses) dominated the field with a 1:56.2 800
win, and Matt Noonan (Baldwin) matched sister Stacy's
3200 win (9:36.41, just edging Clay Center's Joe Moore 9:36.44)
and then won the 1600 (4:26.45)

Girls
- Heroic efforts abounded in the Class 4A girls meet, with
Marysville (led by Kendra Wecker and Courtney
Bruna) winning over Clay Center (despite Abby Block's three
gold medals and one state record effort). Wecker won the
javelin at 164-6, a new state record, then placed 2nd in the
200 (25.82 to Bruna's 25.56). Bruna also won the 100 (12.43),
then joined Wecker and LJ winner Kyrsten Beckman (18-2.25)
to run a 48.74 4 x 100 breaking their state record set in 1998
by over a second! The long jump competition was heated with Carla
Albers (Chapman) second at 18-1 and Rachel Reppert (Burlington)
third at 18-.5. Albers later placed third in the HJ at 5-6.
That HJ competition was won by Nicole Ohlde (Clay
Center) at 5-6 over Morgan High (Girard, 5-6). Ohlde then came
back to run a 2:24 split on Clay Center's state record
setting 4 x 800 (9:33.12). That relay was anchored in 2:18 by
Abby Block, who then returned with a 5:22.74 to repeat last
year's mile win, a 2:23.9 800 4th (won by Ottawa's Lindsey
Dietrich at 2:21.21) and finally a leg on Clay Center's
4:04.0 winning 4 x 400. Molly Lonergan (Iola) had a
state record 150-7 DT after placing second in the JT (138-0),
and Carbondale-Santa Fe Trail's Angie Heffner vaulted
11-4, following last week's 11-6 regional win.

Boys
- Cheney used their depth to take the team title, while Justin
Remple (Hesston) highlighted individual performances with
state record wins in 4:16.1/ 1:54.2. Rival Jesse Orozco (Ellsworth)
won the 3200 (9:50.02) then placed second to Remple in 4:30.2/
1:58.6. Neil Philpott (Norton) won a 58-7/ 178-4 DT
throws double, then placed third in the JT 181-5. Kelly
Condray (Minneapolis) won the JT 200-10, with Locke
Uppendahl (Cheney) 2nd at 199-3. Jon Dickson (SE of
Saline) won a sprint double at 10.95/ 22.11

Girls
- Conway Springs edged Halstead 54-52 with a 4:02.1
4 x 400 victory. Stacy Keller lead Halstead with 25.59/
58.12 victories. Erin Mortimer (Riley County) won a
5:08.8/ 11:19.55 distance double, with Carissa Van Gundy
(Northern Heights) winning a 2:19.5 800 after placing 2nd in
the 1600 (5:20.6). Van Gundy also led off N. Heights 9:46.91 4
x 800. Christi Lehman (Hesston) vaulted 11-0.

Boys
- Joe Warner's triple distance championship (
1:58.4/ 4:31.0/ 9:47.5) led Stanton County to a state
team title by 35 points. Ryan Ketchum (Hutchinson
Trinity) won a weight double (56-8.25, 164-7 DT). In a big
javelin competition Josh Scheer (Garden Plain) threw
205-8 to beat Brock Schwarz (Washington) 202-9

Girls
- Osborne was led to the team title by April
Roadhouse's 4 victories (59.42/ 2:18.1/ 4:06.1 4 x 4/ 9:57
4 x 8). Laurie Koehn (Moundridge) placed second in the
800 (2:18.2) and won the 1600/ 3200 (5:26.9/ 11:44.54). Michelle
Young (St. Francis) won a close LJ competition from Jennifer
McCoy (Sterling) 17-11 to 17-10.75. Tabra Alpers (St.
John) won the JT at 139-1

Using an international javelin borrowed from Cloud
Community College, Marysville KS jr Kendra Wecker boomed out a
169-5 throw, 10 feet further than the previous US#1 in the DyeStat
Elite rankings. All of her throws were over 160 feet.
Wecker was competing in the 4A regional at Concordia. She also ran on
a 48.9 4 x 100, and won 26.0, 57.1 races.
