Pennsylvania boys and girls hit the "these meets count" stage with the Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association Track Carnival at Lehigh University today, Saturday, February 12.

In the girls 400, Tash Staten of William Penn ran an 56.36 NSI qualifer and new US#2, along with Danielle Rodgers of Pennwood, with a 58.10 (too bad she's a sophomore). Ebonye White of Simon Gratz ran a Nike qualifier of 59:00. Tasha had earlier won the 60 meter dash with a new US#4 7.75.

In the girls 4 x 800 Meter Relay, William Penn (Gorgeous Harper, Qusha Anthony, Meshia Thomas, Madonna Patterson) set a meet record and new US#3 with their NSI time of 9:29.74. They were chased aggressively the entire race by Nazareth Academy, which finished with a 9:34.28 NSI. NSI times were also run by Conestoga (9;38.02), Pennsbury (9:44.22), Upper Darby (9:45.32), and Pennridge (9:45.42).

There were incredible performances by boys and girls, but the 15' 7" pole vault poll vault which came from State College senior Kevin Dare was spectacular, as he hit a new US #4. Kevin Kelly of Strath Haven cleared 14-3 to qualify for NSI.

In the girls 4 x 800 Meter Relay, William Penn set a meet record and new US#1 with their NSI time of 9:29.74. They were chased aggressively the entire race by Nazareth Academy, which finished with a 9:34.28 NSI. NSI times were also run by Conestoga (9;38.02), Pennsbury (9:44.22), Upper Darby (9:45.32), and Pennridge (9:45.42).

In the girl's pole vault, five girls broke the meet record. The winner was Sara Dougherty of Springfield Delco, with a 10-6 vault. Dana Gioia of State College, and Anne Koller of Phoenixville, 9'6",NSI not NIC; Meghan Douglas-Snyder of Southern Lehigh and Michelle Fozzie of Upper Dublin, 9'0", NSI not NIC.

In the girls 800, North Penn's Cheryl Smith hit on all cylinders with her NSI qualifer of 2:17.69 William Penn's Gorgeous Harper (2:19.66) and Upper Merion's Niya Adams (2:21.42). DyeStat Elite times were run by Upper Darby's Erin O'Doherty (2:21.43) and Pennsbury's Rebecca Powell (2:22.23). O'Doherty had led most of the way, until Harper made a move, gaining a 5 meter lead entering the final 100. That's when North Penn's Cheryl Smith powered the final two turns to a strong 2:17.69. Dana Early of Ridley, finished sixth with her 2:23.19.

Troy Roberson of William Tennent won the 60 meter dash with a 6:96 (new US#6). Eight runners in the event ran DyeStat Elite times.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Jamal Huff from West Catholic, won in an NSI qualifier and new US# 4 of 8:13.

The first six runners in the boys 800 broke two minutes, as Joe Plevelich of Henderson (1:56.10) new US#6, and Pat Nash of Cardinal O'Hara (1:56.41) new US#9 continued their season long duel in the 800. Both runners were content to tuck in for the first two laps before hitting the last quarter hard. Plevelich pushed his advantage to a slight gap on Nash entering the final lap, which Nash couldn't make up. NIC times were run by Central's Tony Fulton (1:58.28) and Beaufort Jenkins of Simon Gratz, 1:58.71. Joe Weigner of Council Rock (1:59.65) and Paul Hallman of Neshaminy (1:59.88) ran DyeStat Elite times.

In the boys mile Sean Duffy and Dan Coval had quite a duel. Coval was clearly not in top shape the last 400 as he tried to take the legs from 800 specialist Duffy with a 2:09 first half. Coval took lead on 2nd lap. Duffy closed on the fifth lap, and they went through the next quarter in 66. At the start of last quarter, Duffy surged past Coval, who responded for the next 100 before Duffy pulled away and held a 10 meter lead entering the final lap. North Penn's Dan Michael closed on a tired Coval, as Duffy pulled a 64 final quarter and missed a meet record by less than a second. Karl Dusen, who has the second best 3000 in PA this year, finished fourth with an NIC time of 4:26.55. It was great to see a 4:20 mile by a high schooler at Lehigh.

In the girls mile, William and Mary bound Katie Turner of Conestoga led a group of five through the half, setting the pace most of the way. Julia Puldin of Baldwin Academy passed Turner with about 100 meters to go, with in a meet record time of 5:12.92, bettering Phoenixville's Stacey Robinson's time of 5:12.97, set in 1992.

In the girls 200, Dominique Darden of Harrisburg ran a fast 25.29 new US#6 (NSI), to beat Christina Smith of William Penn, who had a 25.93 NIC 200 Meter Dash. Central's Morgan Cephas ran an NIC 26.29.

Troy Roberson of William Tennent ripped through the 200 to win the 200 with a 22.31 New US#9, over Terrance Day of Simon Gratz, with his 22.51 (new US #15). Tyrone Diggs, Glen Mills, ran an NSI 22:62. PA Football Player of the Year, Mark Jones of Strath, was fourth at 22:91, followed by Jamal Huff, the winner of the 60 meters, with a 23:11, both DyeStat Elite times.

Josieanne Lauber missed Villanova freshman (and Archbishop Prendergast graduate) Shiela Klick's meet record in the 3000 by five seconds. Prepping for the 3000, Lauber said she was looking for "just a nice, fun race, and then I'll go out and see what happens." She and mile winner Julia Puldin broke away early and went through the half in 2:35 and the mile in 5:24. Lauber said her strategy was to run her own race, and push the pace. On the third quarter, Lauber was able to open about a 20 meter lead on Puldin. Julia closed the distance before Lauber pulled away to win in 10:22.14, four seconds off her PR. Puldin ran a 10:26.34 NSI. Lauber plans to run the 3000 at Penn Relays in April. Erin Peiffer of Solanco ran a10:39.09 NIC qualifier.

Lauber has run every day of this snowy winter, even during a blizzard, to try to stay in shape for the spring. Desperate for an interval workout, she even recently took a shovel to three foot drifts on the Oxford High School all-weather track. "I cleared about 100 meters, looked up, saw three foot drifts for the next 300 meters and decided to quit. Last year though, I shoveled the entire track of a couple inches of snow."

The boys 400 saw Gerren Ryans, Central (Phil) run an NSI 50.26, followed closely by Conestoga's Rich Watson with a 50:32.

Southern Lehigh's Mike Newhard, who had cleared 6-10 earlier this season, won the high jump with his 6-8.

In the High Jump, Sarah Click of Penncrest hit 5'6" (NSI). DyeStat Elite jumps were performed by Tychelle Rudolph of William Tennent, and Hill School's Katherine Wallace, both with 5-4.

The boys shot boasted two NSI performances. Mike Stellefson of Cumberland Valley (just west of Harrisburg), won by just under four inches with his 54-9 3/4. Chris McKelvey of North Penn, was second with his 54-6. Both are NSI throws.

In the girls shot put, Pam Kessler of William Tennent threw an NSI qualifer of 39'9". Arlinda Levy of West Philadelphia threw an NIC of 39-4.

In the Long Jump, Jesse Patterson of Cheltenham won with an NSI leap o 23-2 1/4.

In the relays, it was a clean sweep for the William Penn girls, all three with NSI qualifiers. In the 4 x 200, WP nipped Simon Gratz with a 1:43.23 to .25. Both teams were just ahead of Harrisburg's 1:46.43. Penn Wood and Chester ran NIC times of 1:48.04 and 1:48.47. West Catholic followed with a DyeStat Elite of 1:49.47.

Glen Mills won the boys 4 x 200 by a mere .01 with a 1:31.79 over Simon Gratz. Both are NSI times. Strath Haven's 1:32.6 took third, and Central's 1:32.96,fourthboth NIC times.

The boys 4 x 800 was won in NSI time by North Penn with an 8:07.22. Father Judge also ran an NSI qualifier, with their 8:09.71. Upper Merion was third at 8:17.61 (NIC).

In the girls 4 x 400 Meter Relay, there were four NSI performances, including William Penn's winning 3:57.14, Harrisburg's 3:59.20, Chester's 4:01.04, and a 4:02.24 from Simon Gratz. Nazareth (4:07.58) and Council Rock (4:10.31) both ran NIC times.

In the boys 4x400, the Central team of Curtis West, Geren Ryans, Mike Majors, and Tony Fulton, set a new meet record with a 3:23.16 new US#9 NSI time. Simon Gratz (3:23.34) new US#10 and Glen Mills (3:25.34) also ran NSI qualifiers.
