Boys Highlights and Detailed Results

Detailed Results

The performance of the meet was the 15' 7" pole vault which came from State College senior Kevin Dare, as he hit a new US #4. Kevin Kelly of Strath Haven cleared 14-3 to qualify for NSI.

In the boys mile Sean Duffy and Dan Coval had quite a duel. Coval was clearly not in top shape the last 400 as he tried to take the legs from 800 specialist Duffy with a 2:09 first half. Coval took lead on 2nd lap. Duffy closed on the fifth lap, and they went through the next quarter in 66. At the start of last quarter, Duffy surged past Coval, who responded for the next 100 before Duffy pulled away and held a 10 meter lead entering the final lap. North Penn's Dan Michael closed on a tired Coval, as Duffy pulled a 64 final quarter and missed a meet record by less than a second. Karl Dusen, who has the second best 3000 in PA this year, finished fourth with an NIC time of 4:26.55. It was great to see a 4:20 mile by a high schooler at Lehigh.

Troy Roberson of William Tennent ripped through the 200 to with a 22.31 New US#9, over Terrance Day of Simon Gratz, with his 22.51 (new US #15). Tyrone Diggs, Glen Mills, ran an NSI 22:62. PA Football Player of the Year, Mark Jones of Strath, was fourth at 22:91, followed by Jamal Huff, the winner of the 60 meters, with a 23:11, both DyeStat Elite times.

Roberson also won the 60 meter dash with a 6:96 (new US#6). Eight runner in the event ran DyeStat Elite times.

In the 60 meter hurdles, Jamal Huff from West Catholic, won in an NSI qualifier and new US# 4 of 8:13.

The first six runners in the boys 800 broke two minutes, as Joe Plevelich of Henderson (1:56.10 new US#6), and Pat Nash of Cardinal O'Hara (1:56.41 new US #9) continued their season long duel in the 800. Both runners were content to tuck in for the first two laps before hitting the last quarter hard. Plevelich pushed his advantage to a slight gap on Nash entering the final lap, which Nash couldn't make up. NIC times were run by Central's Tony Fulton (1:58.28) and Beaufort Jenkins of Simon Gratz, 1:58.71. Joe Weigner of Council Rock (1:59.65) and Paul Hallman of Neshaminy (1:59.88) ran DyeStat Elite times.

Gerren Ryans, Central High, (50:26) nipped Conestoga's Rich Watson (50:32) in the 400. Both are NSI times. The next six runners in the boys 400 ran NIC times.

Glen Mills (Curtis Smith, Bronte Mills, Bobby McCall, Tyrone Diggs) won the boys 4 x 200 by a mere .01 with a 1:31.79 over Simon Gratz. Both are NSI times. Strath Haven's 1:32.6 took third, and Central's 1:32.96,fourthboth NIC times.

The boys 4 x 800 was won in NSI time by North Penn (Jim Farrow, Gerry Lichsch, Steve Craig, Dan Michael) with an 8:07.22. Father Judge also ran an NSI qualifier, with their 8:09.71. Upper Merion was third at 8:17.61 (NIC).

In the 4x400, the Central team of Curtis West, Geren Ryans, Mike Majors, and Tony Fulton, set a new meet record with a 3:23.16 (new US$ 9) NSI time. Simon Gratz (3:23.34 -new US#10) and Glen Mills (3:25.34) also ran NSI qualifiers.

Southern Lehigh's Mike Newhard, who had cleared 6-10 earlier this season, won the high jump with his 6-8.

The shot boasted two NSI performances. Mike Stellefson of Cumberland Valley (just west of Harrisburg), won by just under four inches with his 54-9 3/4. Chris McKelvey of North Penn, was second with his 54-6. Both are NSI throws.
