When Walter Henning smashed the national indoor high school record with his 86'5.5 at this meet last winter, most track gurus believed his mark would stand for at least a few years. Fortunately, Californian Conor McCullough decided to ignore them when he stepped into the Armory circle, and on his third throw he unleashed a monster 87'10.75 to smash Henning's
national mark.
McCullough, who is a junior, would of course hold on to win but without improving on his record in the final. His series was: 78'3.75, F, 87'10.75, 83'6.25, F, 86'2.25.
Visibly upset Georgian Wesley Wright finished with the silver for the second year running, throwing 73'8, 14 feet behind the winner.
The new national record holder said on his way to the medal ceremony, "this was actually my first indoor competition, so I am completely not used to it. As a matter of fact, I had never seen
an indoor throwing facility before. I expected to have a lot of competition, especially from Wright, so I was surprised by the margin of victory. I expected to throw maybe 81 feet, which
should have been enough to beat Wright. On the record-breaking throw, everything felt so smooth. When my technique is right, everything else just flows along. Both in hammer and weight throw the technique always comes first, so the fact that I am not as big as the other guys in the ring does not matter as much [McCullough is 6'4 and 200 lbs.]. I will try to improve even more outdoors, especially in the hammer, which is by far my favorite event."

3. Lauren Chambers Jr. Marietta, GA 56-8.75 Summary: Flowers set another mark- this time the Armory and meet record. After one average throw and two fouls Flowers got her mark on the fourth attempt. She appeared more excited about the second foul, “I fouled a 65 footer by a little bit.” Still, a big win is a big win. Chambers picked up another big all-american honor in third after winning the Shot put on Friday. Her club teammate Gates broke the sophomore class record on her last attempt. Her best mark prior to the competition was in the 52 foot range.
