Woburn springs a big upset

by Matt Soja, DyeStat correspondent

The meet ended with a major surprise in the boys' 4x400. Newburgh NY and Meade MD (running as Mighty Mustangs) were the only two competing teams to have run under 3:20 this winter and also by far the only two to break 3:20 in qualifying heats - Newburgh ran 3:18.58, which was US #2 this season, and Mustangs ran 3:18.79 for US #4. So the Sunday afternoon's final was expected to be a close battle between the two with the rest of the teams duking it out for third spot.

And for most of the race it looked that way, with both teams leading off in sizzling 48.7, leaving the field two second behind. Newburgh established a slight lead leading up to second exchange, but on third leg the Mustangs went in front halfway through. However, when Newburgh's Randy Patterson tried to get around the Mustang on the last turn, tragedy stuck as they collided rather violently, with the Newburgh runner falling to the ground and his counterpart limping down the straightaway to the final exchange.

Nevertheless, the Mighty Mustangs held the lead through the anchor exchange, and when it looked like it was all over, Woburn MA anchor Brett Sullivan came out of nowhere to unleash a punishing kick and fly by the Mustang in the last few steps to claim the victory by mere two hundredths of a second in 3:19.16. Sullivan split a spectacular 47.8, bringing the crowd to its feet. Woburn's first three legs were Michael McDonough (51.4), Ryan Bencheikh (51.3), and Matt Pereira (50.4). This was a huge improvement for the Bay State team, which had not broken 3:22 before this weekend.

Sullivan admitted, "this was one of the best kicks of my life. I did not want to go out too hard, and it paid off as I had just enough left to catch him on the last couple of steps." He added that running 3:15 outdoors might be a possibility.

It's not over until it's over

1. Speed City (Los Angeles) 3:49.85
2. South Bay 3:50.16
3. Boys & Girls; Brooklyn, NY 3:50.41

Summary:

A lesson is to be learned by all in attendance. No matter how good a relay team is, the race isn’t over until the stick crosses the finish line.

B&G absolutely had victory in the bag until on the third leg Hadassah Bruno was caught on the backstretch with 125m to go. Bruno was slightly nudged by Speed City and her baton popped loose on the track. By the time she picked it up, major ground was lost.

B&G still had Superwoman waiting for the anchor leg. Nadonnia Rodriques got the baton more than 50m back but maintained poise for the first 200. The crowd was in total frenzy for they almost wanted a situation like this for Rodriques.

The nation’s best 400m runner got just about even with South Bay and Speed City but could not quite overtake them. Despite a very busy day, Rodriques still ran an amazing 52.5 split.
