CLEAR SPRING MD, 10/31/97 - Clear Spring senior Tim Mason set a course record on his last race at home in 16:01.2, breaking Brian Schnebly's 1994 record by 13 seconds. The probable top seed for the state Class 1A championships shrugged off a broken spike plate that had a spike sticking into his foot for the last 2.5 miles of the race.
Southern Garrett's Runnin' Rams spotted Mason his trophy and then poured in five of the next six positions to win the team title over Clear Spring, 22-51.
On the distaff side, Allegany, paced by Kate Gall's second place finish. was a 37-61 winner over both Southern Garrett and Smithsburg. The individual winner was Rachel Leverenz of Northern Garrett with a time of 19:40.8.
