Boys 2A champion Jarrett Van Tine, Bethesda Chevy Chase, barely arrived in time to run the race, let alone warm up - then he recorded the fastest time of the day (16:27)

Five of eight 1997 team champions and four of eight individuals repeated in 1998.
Best teams of the day, regardless of class, based on adding up the times of the five scorers:
Girls: Middletown 106:05, Severna Park 106:32, Walter Johnson 106:37, Whitman 107:34, Dulaney 107:36, Seneca Valley 107:56.
Boys: Westminster 85:31, Whitman 85:53, River Hill 87:09, Gaithersburg 87:21, South Carroll 87:22.
River Hill boys' 28-point score was one of the lowest in the history of the state meet.  They had 5 of the top 9 scorers and 6 of the top 14 actual finishers.
Girls 2A favorite Lee McDuff, River Hill, had the lead, but collapsed at mid-race after being overtaken by eventual winner Kari McCarty.  She was taken to a hospital for treatment and released; Coach Earl Lauer told the Hagerstown Herald-Mail she suffered from dehydration.
Two dynasties ended: Dulaney girls at four straight state 4A championships (Severna Park) and Southern Garrett boys five straight 1A (Westmar).
Middletown girls may have launched a new dynasty.  They won their second straight title with sophomores as six of the seven varsity runners, and they have two eighth graders ready to challenge for the varsity next year.  The Lady Knights had the best combined time of all classes both last year and this.
Severna Park girls took the pack philosophy to the top.  Coming from second in their region, they won the 4A state championship with a 10-13-17-19-23 showing.  No other team champion had worse than 5th place from their leader.
Boys were faster this year and girls slower compared to 1997.  Chart of the winners:
  1A 2A 3A 4A
Boys 97 16.41 16.58 17.07 16.46
98 16.58 16.27 16.36 16.39
Girls 97 20.33 19.36 19.18 20.22
98 20.59 19.49 19.56 19.45

The annual state meet of Maryland public schools is conducted through four classes and four regions, culminating with eight races (boys and girls, four classes) on state championship day at Hereford High School on November 14, 1998. An explanation of classes and lists of schools by class and region is on DyeStat's MPSSAA page.

DyeStat Preview

At the risk of slings and arrows and against my better judgment, here is a preview of the State Meet at Hereford Saturday November 14.  I will blame the bad picks on the coaches present at last Sunday's state committee meeting in Laurel.  And if I look too bad, remember I edit this page, so by Sunday this preview may have vanished in cyberspace.

Automatic Picks  - Some of the favorites are so strong that almost everyone would pick them to win.   These include:

2A:

Boys team: River Hill (maybe the heaviest favorite of the day and coached by the state committee chair)
Boys individual: Jarrett Van Tine, BCC
Girls team: Middletown, defending champs, winner of MVAL, Frederick County, Lancer Invitational - may vie for best overall girls team time.

3A:

Boys team: South Carroll, defending champs
Boys individual: David Glynn, Walter Johnson, defending champ

Favorites - Not as short odds as those above, but still consensus picks:

1A:

Boys individual: Zach Bittinger, Westmar

Close Calls - Maybe too close to call, but we promised a preview:

1A:

Boys team: Southern Garrett goes for its sixth straight title and should get it.
Girls team: Hereford girls' 20-point win in the East merits a slight edge, but Allegany or Glenelg would be no surprise.
Girls individual:  Erin Davis of Allegany has been winning.

2A:

Girls individual: Four state champions contend perhaps the best race of the day -
-- Lee McDuff of River Hill, 1998 outdoor 3200 meter champ
-- Kari McCarty of North Hagerstown, west region champion
-- Liz Lowrie of Urbana, west runner-up enjoying a resurgence in her senior year
-- Randy Buzzell of Middletown, defending champ and 1998 outdoor 1600 meter champ, but inconsistent this year; 3rd in west region.
Can McDuff hold off the three West region contenders?  She's won almost every race she's entered this year, so we pin the favorite tag on her.

3A:

Girls team: Defending champ Walter Johnson has a slight edge over C. Milton Wright.
Girls individual:  East champion Alexis Wieroniey of Northern Calvert finished 8th last year and the top 7 graduated, making her an obvious choice.  But Colleen Lawson of North Carroll has been tough and consistent all year.

4A:

Boys team:  How can you pick against Westminster to repeat?  By looking at Gaithersburg's victory over Walt Whitman in the west with five boys under 16 minutes.   This is a 3-team race, with all three having a good chance.
Boys individual: If Westminster doesn't win the team title, Jason Santucci will probably have a repeat individual championship for solace.
Girls team: Perennial champion Dulaney will have its hands full with Quince Orchard, but should prevail.
Girls individual: The Hull twins vs. Katie Sloan of Glen Burnie. Claudine Hull is defending champ, but Lucinda won the West.  And Katie has been coming on strong.   The pick:  Sloan.
