Event #84 - Women's 100 Meter Dash

Super Chino senior, Angela Williams, the 1997 Track & Field

News Athlete of the Year, closes out a great Arcadia Invitational

career here, with the National Junior and Pan American Junior

Champion finishing out 1997 one one-hundredth behind the ancient

prep National Record of 11.13 by Chandra Cheeseborough from 1976.

The rocket-starting Williams was 11.50 last year here, with

famed Marion Jones the meet record-holder with an 11.38 Meet

Record in one of those great races aginst Florida's Zundra

Feagin. A fine group will keep Angela honest, led by Texas 5A

champion Lakeesha White (Yates, Houston), who two years ago was

fifth in the World Junior Championships over 100 meters at

11.43. Tania Woods (Skyline, Oakland) 11.7, Brianna Glenn (La

Mirada) 11.62w, and Miya Edmonson (St. Bernard, Playa del Rey)

11.71w, will add to what will be another sterling competition!

Event #103 - Women's 200 Meter Dash

Another super group of sprinters will battle here, led by

Track & Field News Prep Athlete of the Year, Angela Williams

(Chino)--Williams has run 11.14 for 100 meters, with a 23.4

during a 1997 season where she concentrated on the 100 and Long

Jump. Monique Hall (Yates, Houston, Tx) was the fastest frosh in

the nation last year at 23.93w (24.08), with Brianna Glenn (La

Mirada) 24.52 and Latrice Borders (Wilson, Long Beach) 24.06w

racing in what will be another super sprint!

Event #92 - Women's Invitational 400 Meters

Last year's top junior high long sprinter, Monique Henderson

(Morse, San Diego), will have her prep "coming out" here, with

11.87 (100m), 24.11 (200m), and 53.83 (400m) bests last year in

the eighth grade! The 53.83 would rank #7 on last year's high

school list! She will meet a top group here, including fellow

frosh Lashinda Demus (Wilson, Long Beach), who cranked 54.35

(400m) and 2:12.48 (800m) clockings last year in junior high (and

54.23 two weeks ago). Tiffany Giles (Garfield, Seattle, Wa) was

55.07 last year, with Kadrina Coffee (St. Bernard, Playa del Rey)

55.48 already this spring and a 53.96 lifetime best. Joni Smith

(Wilson, Long Beach) was 53.68 two years ago, with Miesha Withers

(St. Bernard, Playa del Rey), the nation's #3 100m runner at

11.58 (and an 11.78 two weeks ago), stepping up in distance here.

It should be a great deep event!

Event #87 - Women's 800 Meters

State Champion Lindsay Hyatt (Placer, Auburn) 2:08.63

(indoors this winter) is the top at this distance in the country,

with a National Scholastic Indoor title this winter. She raced

an impressive solo 4:51.82 mile two weeks ago. A couple of weeks

back in a local low-key meet with a visting Hawaii team she raced

a 2:09 in edging out Eri Macdonald (Punahou, Honolulu) who ran

2:10.3 after both covered the first 400 in 68 seconds. Both come

from running families, with Linday's father Ron a state meet

competitor for Placer over 800 meters a couple of decades back

before starring for Indiana University, with Eri's dad Duncan a

distance star at Stanford. The rematch here between Lindsay and

Eri should be very interesting! Angelita Green (Wilson, Long

Beach) was State runner-up last year in 2:09.61 (#2 returnee

nationally), with Danielle Price (Logan, Union City) 2:11.89

among the top ten in the nation. Jeny Petite (Yucaipa) 2:12.36

and Nicole McRae (Garfield, Seattle, Wa) 2:12.54 will add to what

will be a super race!

Event #75 - Women's 1600 Meter Run

Elaine Canchola (Nordhoff, Ojai) is closing out a

spectacular local career this spring as a senior, and she is the

nation's #3 returnee at 1600 meters with a 4:55.07 best (6th

State Meet). Katie Hotchkiss (Mission San Jose, Fremont) was

4:57.05 last year (#6 returnee in country), with Anne-Elyse

Smith (Aptos) 4A:59.17 for 4th in State. Keep an eye on frosh

Sara Bei (Montgomery, Santa Rosa) who impressed this Fall in her

first season of interscholastic running, finishing a very

successful Cross-Country season at the Foot Locker Nationals!

Event #88 - Women's 3200 Meters

A strong group will battle here. Lauren Fleshman (Canyon,

Canyon Country) 10:38.13, Kimi Welsh (Yucaipa) 10:38.96, and

Allyson Marquand (University, Irvine) 10:39.17 are among the top

ten in the country in this event, with all having strong Fall

Cross-Country seasons. Marquand soloed a 5:00 1600 a couple of

weeks back. There should be a ton of people under 11:00 in this

field.

Event #80 - Women's Invitational 100 Meter High Hurdles

Natasha Neal (Logan, Union City) is the top hurdler in the

nation, with a 13.53 in this event in placing second in the

California State Meet. Great all-arounder Ashley Bethel (Mission

Viejo) was fourth in that State Meet race at 13.82 (#3 returnee

nationally). Another mulit-event star, Camee' Williams (South,

Springfield, Oh), was 14.00 in 1997, with Canadian Felicien

Perdila also under 14.0 last spring.

Event #100 - Women's 300 Meter Low Hurdles

Natasha Neal (Logan, Union City), the country's fastest

returnee at 41.23 (and National Junior champion over the full 400

meter hurdle distance at 58.19) will meet good competition. Ryan

Peters (Skyline, Oakland) took last year's State meet with a best

of 41.47 (#2 returnee nationally), with Randi Smith (Beverly

Hills) fourth at State with a 42.67 best (#11 returnee in

country), with Carie McGraw (Mission San Jose, Fremont) 43.21 in

placing fifth in State in 1997. Francis Santin (Taft, Woodland

Hills) was 43.43 two weekends ago.

Event #72 - Women's Invitational 400 Meter Relay

Another absolutely super field! Five of the nation's top

seven teams from 1997 are here, and all have top groups

returning! St. Bernard (Playa del Rey) set a National Record of

44.70 last year, with Miesha Withers (#3 returning 100m dasher in

the country at 11.58) leading another strong group. Wilson

(Long Beach) has started faster than last year's 45.63 group,

with a 46.84 run two weekends back. Logan (Union City) was 45.67

in 1997 with the nation's top hurdler, Natasha Neal (13.53 100mH)

and Adrena Williams (11.92) speedsters back on that team. Poly

(Long Beach) was 45.84 in 1997. Texas visitors Yates (Houston)

(46.06 and Texas 5A title last year) have special potential, with

Lakeesha White (fifth in the World Junior Championships in 1996

over 100 meters at 11.43) and soph Monique Hall (23.93 200m in

1997) making the Lone Star group dangerous here!

Event #108 - Women's 1600 Meter Relay

This event will be a great close to the female portion of

the meet! Annually it brings together many of the top teams from

the entire nation with 1998 no exception! St. Bernard (Playa del

Rey) led the country in 1997 with their 3:39.43, with Miesha

Withers (11.58 100m) and Kadrina Coffee (55.48) leading the 98

crew. Wilson (Long Beach), winners here at 3:40.33 (Meet Record

and #2 time nation for entire year) off Kinshasa Davis's 51.3

anchor, has a potentially frightening crew, with Lashinda Demus

(54.23), Latrice Borders (54.47), Angelita Green (55.27), and

Joni Smith (53.68 from 1996) all healthy very capable of going

after the school's All-Time U.S. Prep Best of 3:37.38 from 1996!

Poly (Long Beach) was 3:42.03 (#3 team nation) last year and

another strong team this Spring, with Collinwood (Cleveland)

3:43.19 (#5 team nation) in winning last year's National

Scholastic Outdoor title and a good group returning. Yates

(Houston) was the Texas 5A Champs in 3:43.41 (#6 team nation),

with the Texans not coming this far to lose! Taft (Woodland

Hills) was 3:45.16 (#8 team nation) last spring, with another

strong crew returning. This will be a barn-burner!!!!!

Event #101 - Women's Distance Medley Relay

Some very strong teams will have quality groups here.

Sachem (Lake Ronkonkoma, NY) was 12:06.6 indoors this winter, an

excellent time that would have been among the top half dozen run

anytime during last year. Pelham (Alabama) will have a top team,

with Ayala (Chino Hills) saving 4:54 1600m star Jennifer Burris

for duty here, with Carondolet (Concord), Esperanza (Anaheim),

Logan (Union City), and Yucaipa deep groups of runners up through

1600 meters. Last year (1997) fourteen of the top thirty times

in the nation were run in this race!

Event #64 - Women's High Jump

A fine national field will compete here. Camee' Williams

(South, Springfield, Ohio) is one of prep history's great all-

around athletes, with a lifetime best of 5'11.5 and she is our

defending champion here. Kim Stone (York School, Monterey) was

5'09.5 in 1997 and sixth in the California State Meet. Christina

Estricht (Collinwood, Cleveland, Oh) has been over 5'09, with

Julie Stevenson (Diamond Bar) a pleasing improvement to 5'08

already this year. Sandra Butler was the K-Bel Invite winner in

the Central Coast Section with a fine 5'08 in mid-March. Shquay

Brignac (Cleveland, Reseda) was the National Junior Olympic

Champion last summer with a junior high best of 5'10.

Event #89 - Women's Long Jump

Kim Jones (Grimsley, Greensboro, NC) and Camee' Williams

(South, Springfield, Oh) are the =#2 returnees nationally at

19'09.5, with Angela Williams (Chino) out to 19'03 (19'8.25w)

after taking up this event last year. Briana Glenn (La Mirada)

19'0.25, Ashley Bethel (Mission Viejo) 18'11, and Canadian Alayna

Miller 18'10.5 will help make this a very strong field!

Event #66 - Women's Triple Jump

Great all-arounder Brianna Glen (La Mirada), a top sprinter

(11.62w-24.52) and horizontal jumper (19'0.25 and 40'03.75) was

state runner-up in the Triple Jump last June (and 5th in the Long

Jump and a 200 meter finalist). Tamara Espinoza (Hilltop, Chula

Vista) improved mightly last year and was third in the State Meet

with a 39'07.75 best Darnesha Griffin (Trabuco Hills, Mission

Viejo) was 6th in State last June at 39'09.75 for Vacaville High

in northern California, with Jameka Taylor (Littlerock) 39'03.5

and Blessing Ufodicama (Poly, Long Beach) 38'11.75 along to make

this another strong jumping field.

Event #73 - Women's Pole Vault Another fantastic field will

compete here, with four of prep history's top ten Jumpers in

history and the three top returnees in the country from last

year in the group! The nation's top vaulter, Brooke Lankard

(Golden West, Visalia) was second in State last year with a

12'04 best. The next two returnees in the entire nation,

Heather Sickler (Camarillo) has jumped 12'03.5, with Bridget

Pearson (Hoover, Glendale) the 1997 State Champ, a best of

12'00. Sarah Higham (Mission Viejo) 11'09, Allison Knode

(Kingsburg) and Katie Rorem (Marina, Huntington Beach) 11'6 are

among the top half dozen in the nation.

Event #95 - Women's Shot Put

The great quality of the Women's weight events continues

here, with a super group in attendance. Krista Keir (South,

Westerville, Oh) was the National Scholastic Indoor Champion at

51'05.5, and will face rival Rebekah Green (Columbus Girls, Oh),

the nation's #3 athlete back in the event at 48'03.5. Chaniqua

Ross (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) was 47'10.75 last year (#4

returnee nationally) and State third placer behind runner-up

Stephanie Brown (Arroyo Grande) 46'03 (1998).

Event #68 - Women's Discus Throw

Prep history's finest ever "in-season" field in the prep

women's discus will compete here. Six in the field have bests of

over 160 feet, with five over 168'11. Krista Keir (South,

Westerville, Oh) is the top returnee nationally at 181'11, and

she was the runner-up in the 1997 Junior Nationals to UCLA's

Seilala Sua, who set a National Record as a Florida prep in this

meet two years ago. Keir is also a 51 foot Shot Putter with the

goal of leading the nation this season in both events. Chaniqua

Ross (Laguna Creek, Elk Grove) was the State Champ last spring,

and she is the #2 returnee nationally at 177'01. April Burton

(Bakersfield) was runner-up at State last year with a 173'10 best

(#3 returnee nationally). Stephanie Brown (Arroyo Grande)

shocked with improvement to 174'2 two weeks ago, making her the

#13 thrower in U.S. Prep History. The #4, #7, #13, and #14

throwers in entire U.S. High School history will compete in this

event! Mandy Broschwa (Mt. Si, Snoqualmie, Wa) impressed with a

168'11 throw in the Northwest rain in mid-March, with Cecilia

Barnes-Mileham (Clovis West, Fresno) 160'4 last year and third in

the State Meet. Amy Thiel (Christian, Fremont) 154'10, Melissa

Reis (Logan, Union City) 151'11, Jessica Byrne (Ramona) 145'07,

Aimee Nichols (Mountain View, Vancouver, Wa) 144'02, and

Charlotte Turner (Tolleson, Az) 144'01 could make it tough to get

to the Finals in this event!
