Girls Triple Jump
Neidra Covington FL text by Elliott Denman Neidra Covington came in as the top seed and, just as all the expert analysts predicted, won easily. The Fast Forward Track Club/Boca Ciega High of St. Petersburg, Fla. senior, took it all with a hop-step-jump of 39-7, not close to her seasonal best of 41-10, but convincingly ahead of anyone else. Nakeisha Wineglass of Hay High/Alexandria, Va., nabbed second at 38-9 ½, with Jasmine Pickett of Urbana, Illinois' Northwest Track Club third at 37-10 ½. Hopes were that Covington would threaten the meet record of 41- 8 1/2 by Plano, Texas's Erica McLain in 2003, maybe even the National best-ever of 43-11 ½ by Walnut, California's Juliana Yendork in 1991, but it just wasn't to be. It turns out that 39-7 was the lowest winning mark in NIN annals. Covington has big plans beyond track and field. "I'm going to TCU and will major in biology," she said. "I want to become a skin graft surgeon." Coach Eileen Givens' best advice to Covington: "Make sure you hold your last phase," meaning the jump segment.
