Due to Andrew Bangert’s injury, Kinetic Running Club (Saratoga, NY) sat this one out to concentrate on the distance medley relay.
That left the door open for Fayetteville Track, also known as Fayetteville Manlius High School from Manlius, N.Y.
On the opening leg, Fayetteville’s John Heron and Kyle Soloff of Morris Hills High School of Rockaway, N.J., moved into the lead. Soloff handed off to Jayson Decker, who had a slight lead over Fayetteville’s second leg, Thomas Gruenewald.
“We thought we’d be challenged on the first leg,” said Gruenewald, a junior. “But it wound up between us and Morris Hills. I was about five feet behind when I got the baton.”
Gruenwald picked up the pace and passed Decker on the backstretch. “From then on,” he said, “I just wanted to increase the lead.”
After than, the New Yorkers were never headed. Junior Geoff King ran the third leg, with Owen Kimple finishing up in 17:33.28.
“We were going for the national record [17:25.98 from 2004],” said Kimple, a Cornell-bound senior, “but we came up a little short. But we got the meet record [17:46.98, set in 2000], and we’re happy with that.”
Second was Cinco Ranch High School (Katy, TX) in 17:55.26, with Morris Hills settling for third in 18:14.01.
Fayetteville Manlius will also enter the DMR, set for later Saturday.
