Boys Shuttle Hurdles

Two teams from the Garden State, Morris Hills High School of Rockaway, N.J., and Trenton’s Central High, squared off in the fast section. Morris Hills lined up in lane one with the year’s second-fastest prep time. In lane five was the Trenton squad, owners of the year’s No. 3 high school performance.
Right between the two Jersey schools in lane three was Wayne High School of Dayton, Ohio, the defending Nike Indoor champions.
The Ohio quartet emerged victorious once more with a time of 30.89. Seneca Track Club of Tabernacle, N.J., running in an earlier heat, was second in 30.92. Trenton Central was third in 31.28, while Morris Hills wound up sixth with a time of 31.76.
It was the first competitive race of the year for Wayne, which fielded a lineup of Keith Dixon, Jordan McPherson, Cory Holman and Dan Snyder. All are juniors except for Snyder, a senior who ran the third leg on last year’s winning squad.
“We’ll be back next year, too” said a beaming Holman, a lanky long jumper who ran the hurdles Saturday for only the second time in his life.
While they hadn’t seen live action in the rarely contested shuttle hurdle relay this year, the Daytonites came prepared. “We practice in our school gym,” said Dixon.
“We roll out a mat,” added Snyder, “and run on that.”
