BALTIMORE MD 11/16/01 -- DyeStat announces Auburn WA sr Chris
Lukezic and Killingly CT jr Meghan Owen as winners of
the Nike Athlete of the Week award for
the ninth week of the 2001 cross country season.
Lukezic entered his senior year as the fastest returning
distance runner in the country (4:08.82 mile and 8:57.01 3200m).
After a fifth place finish at the Great American Festival in North
Carolina, he returned home to roll through Washington undefeated
until the state meet. Then came a surprising loss to Mead star Jesse
Fayant by 2 seconds in the 4A championship. But Lukezic made amends
in a big way at the BorderClash at Nike world headquarters, Beaverton
OR, last weekend. Facing the top 40 runners from both Oregon and
Washington, Lukezic took command in the last 1000 meters to win
in 12:59 (4.2k).
Chris now has 3 weeks to train for the Foot Locker West regional
at Mt. SAC December 1. "That's been the goal all season,"
he said.
Owen finished her regular season with a 3-week flourish.
After dominating the Connecticut class and open championships by
45 and 37 seconds, she broadened her horizons with a stirring victory
in the New England Championships last Saturday at Goddard Park in
Rhode Island. Owen nipped Liz Gesel, Manchester Central NH by 1
second in 17:37 (5k).
Meghan will now move on to Van Cortlandt Park in New York City
next Saturday as one of the favorites in the Foot Locker Northeast
regional. She was second as a sophomore last year.
The Nike Athlete of the Week award is presented each Friday to
the boy and girl who had the most outstanding achievement of the
previous week. Winners will receive a long-sleeved Nike dry-fit
running shirt and Chris Lear's award winning book, Running with
the Buffaloes, which can be purchased online at ShopDyeStat.
