BALTIMORE MD 10/12/01 -- DyeStat announces Taft CA sr Billy
Nelson and Smoky Hill Aurora CO jr Megan Kaltenbach as
winners of the Nike Athlete of the Week
award for the fifth week of the 2001 cross country season.
Nelson looked the best field in California this season in
the eye at the Clovis Invitational and came out a decisive winner
in 15:10, leaving a gang of DyeStat Foot Locker Favorites in the
lurch: Brett Gotcher, Luke Llamas, Kevin Davis, Casey Burchill,
and Jameson Mora. The only big name missing was Yong-Sung Leal,
and observors were left wondering if Nelson could have beaten him
this day.
Kaltenbach runs at altitude in Colorado and runs fast. This
week she won the multi-state Northglenn Invitational in 17:46 5k,
29 seconds ahead of the field and 17 seconds faster than graduated
Wyoming star Alicia Craig's winning time last year. The race showed
Kaltenbach is back on track after a disappointing showing in the
Carolina heat in the Great American Festival last month. She will
be a top contender in the Foot Locker West regional in December.
The Nike Athlete of the Week award is presented each Friday to
the boy and girl who had the most outstanding achievement of the
previous week. Winners receive a long-sleeved Nike dry-fit running
shirt and Chris Lear's award winning book, Running with the Buffaloes,
