BALTIMORE MD 10/5/01 -- DyeStat announces Peter Meindl, Orchard Park NY senior, and Molly Huddle, Notre Dame Elmira NY senior, as winners of the Nike Athlete of the Week award for the fourth week of the 2001 cross country season.

Peter Meindl can get his hair cut now. Peter and his coach agreed not to cut their hair until he "had a good race." He definitely had a good race at McQuaid last Saturday. Running on a soggy 3-mile course with a new layout that was said to be 10-15 seconds slower than previous McQuaid's, Meindl won in 14:48, just off his own course record set last year. Meindl pulled away late from a good Canadian runner, Adam Hortian, and won by 10 seconds.

Meindl was the 8th and last Northeast region qualifier for the Foot Locker finals last year and finished 21st in Orlando. He is looking like he may move up this year.

Molly Huddle burst on to the national scene at Raleigh last June in the adidas Outdoor Championships mile. Although she was a 1500/3000 double winner at the New York State Meet the week before, she was unheralded in a crowd of established national headliners like Anita Siraki, Erin Donohue, Alicia Craig, and Brooke Novak. So what does Huddle do in her first national race, the 2-mile on Friday night? She goes to the lead and holds it for five laps. "That's the way Pre would do it," she said afterward. Huddle was passed in the end by Siraki and Erika Odlaug, but she held on for third ahead of Alison Tubbs, Maria Cicero, and Natasha Roetter. The next day, Huddle got another third in the mile behind Erin Donohue and Alicia Craig and ahead of Brooke Novak, even though she was the only one doubling.

At McQuaid, Huddle ran away from a pair of 2000 Foot Locker finalists -- Laurel Burdick NY and Michelle Sikes OH -- in a time of 17:04.4, the third fastest 3-mile time in the country this year.

The Nike Athlete of the Week award is presented each Friday to the boy and girl who had the most outstanding achievement of the previous week. Winners receive a long-sleeved Nike dry-fit running shirt and Chris Lear's award winning book, Running with the Buffaloes, which can be purchased online at ShopDyeStat.
