Hudson OH 17:41.31
Hudson anchor Wesley Smith uses ice bath at his hotel to
recover from the 2-mile Friday night
Smith enjoys big lead on anchor less than 12 hours after finishing
5th in the 2-Mile
Hudson enjoyed a balanced team effort , with Matt Kassouf 4:24.0
getting them comfortably in front on the first leg and Wesley Smith
4:20.7, finishing it up less than 12 hours after running fifth (9:03.61)
Friday night in the 2-Mile. . In between were Charlie Straka 4:25.2
and Rohian Patil 4:31.4.
Matt Kassouf, Charlie Straka, Rohian Patil and Wesley Smith of
Hudson, Ohio, teamed up to run 17:41.31, good for first place and
an eight-second victory over Canyon, Calif. Held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday,
the event kicked off the second day of boys competition at the adidas
Outdoor Championships at North Carolina State’s Paul Derr
Track.
The California squad was second in 17:49.47, with Hillsborough,
N.J., third in 17:53.78.
Trapped in the first lap, Kassouf was dead last but began moving
up slowly. He took over the lead from Lawrence North IN's Nef Araia
before handing off to Straka. “It was great to able to get
the lead, said Kassouf, who ran 4:24.0. “Getting the lead
was a big confidence booster.”
Straka said he wasn’t particularly thrilled about being in
first place. “It’s great he got me the lead,”
said Straka, “but I like to run with people.” Straka
ran 4:25.2 to extend Hudson’s lead, and handed off to Patil.
“That was ugly,” said Patil, who ran around 4:31.4.
“I hadn’t run the mile all year. I’ve been running
the 400 and 800.” But Patil earned a spot Monday at the Ohio
outfit’s time trial, and he held off Canyon’s Ryan Morgan
to keep Hudson in the lead. “I had a lot left at the end,”
he said. “I saved too much.”
Smith, the anchor leg, was coming off a fifth-place finish in Friday
night’s two-mile final. He’d hopped into an ice bath
Friday night and ate dinner in his hotel room tub. Smith said he
felt rested, but had other concerns. “I was fretting because
Rohian has only run one mile and it was a time trial,” said
Smith. “But he’s a 400-800 runner so I knew his kick
would be there. I just tried to finish it all.” Smith closed
out the race with a 4:20.7 split.
