In the boys 4A division Mead defended last year's title,
and won their 11th title in the past 14 years beating Mt. Spokane
63 to 78. Jesse Fayant outkicked Auburn's Chris Lukezic to win the
title 15:30 to 15:32. Fayant became the first of many great Fayant
brothers to win an individual title. Cameron Schwehr of Mt. Spokane
placed 3rd in 15:37, and Auburn senior Tyler Campbell had the race
of his life, finishing 4th in 15:38. The top 18 runners qualified
to Border Clash.
4A girls favorite North Central overcame freshman star Stephanie
Whittaker becoming ill, to take the team title 80 to 102 over Eisenhower.
The bigger surprises came in the individual race as national leader
and heavy favorite Alison Tubbs ran through painful injuries
to finish 6th. Her time of 18:53 is nearly two minutes slower than
her 5K PR. After the race she was rushed to the medical tent, and
did not make it to the awards ceremony. Jessie McLaughlin won
in 18:20, and Meredith Crane of Davis matched last year's second
place finish with another one finishing in 18:29. Laura Hodgson
of North Central was the top finisher for her team placing third
in 18:32. Katie Hummel of Eisenhower led her team to 2nd by placing
8th overall and 4th in the team scoring, despite being only her
4th race since recovering from a stress fracture. The top 18 runners
qualified to Border Clash.
Blanchet edged out a tough Columbia River team to win their first
3A boys title since 1992. Blanchet was led by senior Steve
Mull who outkicked Hazen's Dan Hinckley in the last half mile to
win 15:50 to 16:01. Jon Zehe of Kelso placed 3rd in 16:06, and Sammamish
senior Mike Sayenko was hurt a little by a fast early pace, placing
4th in 16:11. The race got ugly at one point when Ferndal sophomore
Joel Pearson was knocked to the ground in heavy traffic, suffering
an abrasion to his shoulder and being spiked in the leg. The top
11 finishers qualified to Border Clash.
Skyline's girls proved their recent string of victories were no
fluke by winning the girls 3A championship, the first ever
in the 5 year old school's history. They placed 1st with 83 points
while fellow Kingco team Newport placed 2nd with 103. Seattle Prep
senior Ray Rogers led most of the race, but was outkicked over the
last several hundred meters by Eastmont sophomore Amanda Miller
who won the race 18:29 to 18:30. sophomore Molly Cole of West Valley
Spokane placed 3rd in 18:51 while senior Marie Foushee' of Bellevue
placed 4th in 19:05. The top 11 finishers qualified to Border Clash.
Riverside's boys coach was so confident his team would win the
2A boys title that he had shirts printed up before the race
declaring them state champions. They did not disappoint, easily
winning the team title over Naches 65 to 103. Individually Matt
Owens of East Valley dominated the race easily winning in 15:43,
36 seconds faster than 2nd place finisher Brett Carter of Naches.
Michael Greenman of Riverside led 3 Riverside runners in the top
6 with a 3rd place 16:25 finish. Ty Axtman of Elma twisted his ankle
during the race, but still managed to finish 7th in 16:35. The top
8 qualified for Border Clash.
Mount Baker girls overcame all obstacles to win their 3rd straight
2A girls title. Freshman Bailey Wilson was already out with
shin splints, sophomore Andrea Brown was already running with a
knee/shin injury, when in the warmups before the race number 4 runner
Meghan Pfeiffer-Hoyt was forced to pull out with a possible stress
fracture to the knee. This left the Mounties with only 6 runners
and little room for error. Seniors Bobeya Krishnek and Kristen Rohde
led their team to victory with the races of their life, finishing
1 and 2 in 18:22 and 18:49. Little sis Karin Rohde finished 6th
overall and 4th in the team standings with a 19:46. Katie Prichard
of Riverside was 3rd in 19:14. The top 8 qualified for Border Clash.
King's boys overcame their team leader suffering mono only a few
weeks earlier, their number 4 runner having a major cold, placing
behind Freeman at a major invitational earlier in the season, and
being ranked as low as 3rd in the A/B boys coaches poll,
to win their 3rd straight A/B team title with their best score yet
of 37 easily beating Liberty Bell who scored 87. Their score of
37 is the lowest total of an A/B team since NW Christian scored
34 in 1994 and the best by any team since Mead scored 34 in 1996.
Individually Adam Roe of King's was unable to defend his title against
last year's second place finisher Reid Carrell of Freeman who outkicked
him over the last half mile this year 16:12 to 16:25. Roe refused
to blame his second place performance on his recent bout with mono
instead praising Carrell's good performance. 3rd place was Williams
Smallwood of Wellpinit in 16:27 and 4th was junior Tyler Foster
of Freeman. Junior Brandon Thompson was 5th, as part of 6 King's
runner in the top 21. The top 3 runners qualified to Border Clash.
King's girls made school history by winning their first ever A/B
girls team title to match the boys. King's girls made the step
up from last year's 2nd place finish, despite losing their number
1 runner, with the help of two freshmen. King's won easily over
Wellpinit 36 to 69. Wellpinit's team featured 1 senior and 6 8th
graders. Only B schools are allowed to use 8th graders as part of
a varsity team. Individually Ashley Hadway of NW Christian Colbert
won easily in 19:32 over Mandee Carlson of Pateros and Tina Terry
of Valley Christian. King's top 4 runners placed in the top 8 in
the team scoring.
