Highlights

by Becca Gillespy

Klamath Union had a great day, placing their top 4 runners in the top 20 but it was not enough to cover the gap between 4th and 5th runner, and Bend won the 4A boys title 100 to 118. Bend managed the win despite losing their number 5 runner at the last minute because he missed a class Friday. Lauren Jesperson and Jacob Gomez of Klamath Union went 1 and 2 in 15:29 each, over 3rd place Davis Axel of Sunset. Jesperson was glad for the win after last year collapsing with 300 meters left to go, and finishing last. The top 23 runners advance to Border Clash.

When the team scores were announced the South Eugene girls were very disappointed to learn they had placed 6th in the 4A girls competition despite having a great meet. A short while later that disappointment turned to joy as a scoring error was discovered and they jumped from 6th place to 1st place over Sunset. The final scores were South Eugene 130, Sunset 147, and Sheldon 160. Individually youth won out as no seniors broke the top 4. Junior Christy Paul of Hood River Valley won easily in 18:27, the fastest winning time in 8 years. Sophomore Meghan Armstrong of Tualatin was second in 18:48 and junior Emily McMahon was third in 18:50. The top 23 runners advance to Border Clash.

Wilsonville dominated the 3A boys competition, with seniors Kobi Daum and Henry Emron going 1 and 2 in 16:18 and 16:23 to lead their team to victory in 50 points. Runner up Phoenix scored 102 and 3rd place Astoria scored 108. Phoenix's top 3 placed 4-5-6 in 16:25-16:28-16:32 led by sophomore Kyle Gillete who was followed by two juniors. The top 12 runners advance to Border Clash.

Philomath girls have qualified to the state meet a record 22 consecutive times, but had not won a championship since 1990. Defending 3A girls champ Rogue River had won the last five. All of that changed Saturday as sophomore Brianna Anderson-Gregg finished 1st in 18:54 to lead Philomath to victory and give them their first individual champion since 1983. Teammate Molly Malone overcame a knee injury suffered mud wrestling to place 22nd overall and be the number three runner for Philomath. Sophomore Danielle Jordan of Baker placed 2nd in 19:05 and senior Brynn Cogdill of Estacada finished 3rd in 19:16. The top 12 runners advance to Border Clash.

North Clackamas Christian is probably glad they had a cross country team this year. Junior Jeff Goertz won the State 2A/1A championship for them in a time of 16:47. Troy Blackburn of Stanfield finished second in 17:10 to lead his team to first place in a tight race with Oakridge. Both teams scored 97 points but Stanfield won on the tiebreaker. Knappa senior Jesse Brockey finished 3rd in 17:13 and sophomore Jed Moffitt was the top finisher for Oakridge placing 4th with a time of 17:19. The top 5 runners advance to Border Clash.

Union girls took the 2A/1A title beating Caitlin Gabel 73 to 81. Junior Shalene Fine of Oakridge won the title in 19:46, the fastest time for classification since 1995, and leading her team to a 3rd place finish. Neoma Palmer of Caitlin Gabel placed 2nd in 19:59 and Stephanie Upshaw of Union placed 3rd in 20:15. The top 5 runners advance to Border Clash.
