What a race!
Alan Bader and Wesley Smith staged one of the best XC duels for
a full 5K that I have ever seen. Bader led from start to finish
with Smith glued to his shoulder the entire way. At the half officially
announced splits were 2.16.9; mile - 4:38; 2 mile - 9:38. Bader
led Smith back into the stadium by a stride and tried to make a
surge but Smith covered. As they headed into the final 200 yards
Bader surged again and Smith covered again and with less than 100
yards to go Smith tried to surge on Bader but Bader sensed it and
picked up the pace. Both pell-mell toward the finish. With less
than 75 yards to go Bader pulled even, then ever so slightly away
from Smith, winning by less than half a second. I clocked Bader
in 15:07 and Smith around 15:07.5. Official state results indicated
Bader ran the 5K in 15:07 and Smith finished in 15:07.2. I have
never seen a faster or better 1-2 finish in the six years I have
been in attendance at the state XC meet here in Ohio. What a race!

On to the Foot Locker regional
Scotty's report
The most exciting race of the day was the final race of the day,
the Division I boys race.
Cincinnati LaSalle (#3) and Hilliard Davidson (#9) were both ranked
nationally in the lastest rankings by the Harrier Magazine. It was
Hudson High School, however that came away with the state title
when the smoke cleared at Scioto Downs on Saturday. Hudson's front
pack of junior Wesley Smith (2nd in 15:07.2), senior Austin Schiele
(6th, 15:34)and junior Charlie Straka (16th, 15:53) proved to be
too much for their nationally ranked foes to handle. Hudson (61
points) won the meet going away with LaSalle (78)second and Davidson
(101) third.
Individually, defending champ Allen Bader of Cincinnati LaSalle
held off Wesley Smith by the slimmest of margins for his second
straight title. At the mile mark it was Bader and Smith and Brent
DesRoches of Clayton Northmont separating themselves from the pack.
Bader and Smith eventually pulled away with Bader passing Smith
just before the three mile marker. The final 100 meters was an all
out sprint with Bader, constantly glancing over his shoulder, edging
out Smith by 2 tenths of a second.
Look for Bader (9th in 2000 FL Midwest Regional), Smith (2000 Ohio
Division I 3200 meter champ) and DesRoches to hook up again on November
24th at the Footlocker Midwest Regional at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside
in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
In girls action the state's #1 ranked Division I team, Cincinnati
Turpin, won it's first state title in grand fashion whipping 2nd
place Hilliard Davidson 77-148. All seven of the Spartan runners
were under 20 minutes led by their lone senior, Jaclyn Louis, who
placed 12th with a time of 18:35. With six of seven runners returning
next fall and a strong reserve team to back them up look for Turpin
to be one of the nation's elite teams in the fall of 2002.
The Division I girls race was a battle between Lakewood junior
Michelle Sikes (22nd in 2000 FL Nationals) and junior Emily King
from Dublin Coffman. Running close together for the first two miles
Sikes began to gradually pull away from King on the north loop of
the Scioto downs course. Sikes won
the race in 17:49.7 with King second in 18:07.
Another exciting individual battle was waged in the girls Division
III race between senior Angela Homan of Spencerville (35th in 2000
FL Midwest region) and sophomore Carime Reinhart of Hopewell Loudon.
Homan, the prerace favorite, pulled away from Reinhart and won the
race in 17:53.7. Reinhart was a close second finishing in 17:59.
