Rockford MI (red "R" on white singlets) is back in the pack after graduation of most of last year's team, including superstar Dathan Ritzenhein. They finished 8th. How is "life after Ritz" for Rockford? "Quiet," said Coach Prins. "Empty," said a member of the North Kent Running Club, the booster club for Rockford runners.

1600 meters - Araia and Smith (hidden) open up big gap on the field with 4:42 split
1600 meters - Sammy Shaw, Carmel IN (297) leads the chase pack

3200 meters - Araia starts to pull away at 9:39.
1st: Nef Araia, Lawrence North IN
2: Wesley Smith, Hudson OH
3: Sammy Shaw, Carmel IN
4-5: Milford's Dan Derusha & Nick Kopczyk

Nef Araia

Araia had a poor outdoor season last spring and asked his coach how he could go under 15 minutes for 5k and under 9 minutes for 2 miles. "Do everything times 10," the coach said. Araia may be following his advice. He was planning to go to USATF Junior Olympics nationals with his friends, but now may enter the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships instead.
