Brian Dalpiaz still unbeaten as Meindl stays home
by John Dye
WAPPINGER FALLS NY 11/17/01 -Sayville jr Brian Dalpiaz
continued his season undefeated, but will have to wait until next
Saturday at the Foot Locker Northeast regional to face Orchard Park
sr Peter Meindl. The two won different divisions of last week's
NYSPHSAA championships and would normally have met in the Federation
meet. But Meindl decided to focus on next week's Foot Locker in
New York City.
"I'm sorry Meindl didn't come," said Dalpiaz,
"but I almost stayed home myself."
As the race played out, Dalpiaz was able to save
himself for next week even while winning. Content to run off the
pace for the first mile and half, Dalpiaz then decided to probe.
"I made a surge to see if anyone would go with me, and no one
did." So Dalpiaz cruised home under wraps in 15:45.37, second
fastest ever at Bowdoin (Charles Millieon, St Anthony's 15:39.7
2000) with a 10-second margin over Canton sr Jon Pierce.
Now, Dalpiaz hopes to learn from last year's race
at the Foot Locker regional. "I got a horrible start and was
buried in about 100th place." Then it took too much out of
him trying to move up in in the narrow trails in the woods at Van
Cortlandt Park.
