Highlights:
AA Girls: Zoe Nelson of Flathead beats defending champ Heidi Lane of Rusell, setting a new State record of 17:29 which beats Lane's old record of 17:45 set as a sophomore. Lane finishes in 17:31 and collapses. She is taken to the hospital but is fine. Flathead beats Russell for the team title 31-87.
AA Boys: Kurt Michels of Flathead wins easily in 15:03. Flathead also wins easily with 37 points.
A Girls: Kasey Harwood of Polson edges Kaci Calaway of Bigfork 18:57 to 18:58. Bigfork takes the team title.
A Boys: Ed Heider of Whitefish wins in 15:44 while Billings Central wins the team title.
B Girls: Kristen Wickens of Townsend wins easily in 19:13. Cut Bank wins the team title.
B Boys: Richie Pemberton of Manhattan wins by almost a minute in 15:11 while Loyola Sacred Heart wins the team title.
C Girls: Lois Ricardi of Manhattan Christian wins in 20:00 and leads her team to a dominating victory with 29 points.
C Boys: Aaron Smith of Kremlin/Gilford beats Nat Iron Heart of Heart Butte 15:41 to 15:44. Plenty Coups High wins the team title.

Story by Paul Jorgensen of Flathead High

Flathead High School won both girls and boys team championships and also won both individual championships as well. The classic match up for the meet was between two time state champion Heidi Lane and freshman Zoë Nelson. Nobody left early in anticipation for this race and it turned out to be a crowd-pleasing effort by both runners. Lane ran off the shoulder of Nelson the entire way and attempted several surges but to no avail. It did come down to the very end when Heidi broke stride and Zoë finished strong into the chute. The end result of this classic duel was both runners finished well under the state record of 17:45. Zoë finished at 17:29 and Lane in 17:31. Preceding the girl's race Kurt Michels totally dominated the boys' AA field by coming in at 15:03, which was the fastest time of the day. Kurt was hoping that some of his rivals would have challenged him but his fast start evidently discouraged the competition. The wind was awful. Gusts 15-25 mph. The wind really did affect times. By how much is just a guess but the times are about 30 seconds slower compared to previous times on the same course. The girls seem to be about 10-15 seconds slower this year. The Flathead Braves made it five straight team titles, which ties the record of most consecutive wins by a double A school.
