report from Rim Rock Farm: Full day here after the state meet. Here's
a quick summary and top teams and medalists. Amy Hasting's run was the most
dominating performance I've seen at Rimrock since we opened Olathe East in
1992 and started taking XC teams to state. Full results will be available
shortly at www.freestaterunning.com. Division 6A6A
Boys: Tight team and individual races highlighted the first
race of the day at Rimrock Farm at the Kansas State Cross Country Championships.
A perfect day, sunny and cool with little wind greeted the runners as they
prepared to face Rimrock's rugged hills. With no clear favorite and extremely
close team scoring expected, the field went out cautiously with Olathe East
sophomore James Swartz leading the field through the first mile and a half.
Just after the Oak Holler Bridge hill, the field accelerated down through
Timber Trail to the new King's Bridge, with Ryan Wilson (Wichita Heights),
Tyler Roark (Hutchinson) and a host of others as a ten to fifteen man pack
strung out over about 20 to 30 yards. Team contenders Lawrence and SMNW were
both well represented, with Lawrence Free State well packed in the field.
Through the broome fields from the two to two and half mile mark, the pack continued
to whittle down to a ten man pack of Wilson, Dylan McClain (Lawrence), Will
Polk (SMNW), Matt Swedlund (Washburn Rural), David Williams (Wichita West),
Roark, Bo Clark (WIchita Heights), Jason Pugh (SMNW) and Swartz. Lawrence's
Justin Riley and Free State's Justin White were also quickly moving up as
the runner's crossed a dam leading to The Narrows, a trail leading through
a forested area approaching the Billy Mills Hill, a steep fifty yard climb.
Amazingly the pack continued together up the climb with Wilson, McClain,
Polk, Swedlund and Williams opening a small gap over the others. As the field
crested the Jim Ryun Skyline in full view of the spectators it became obvious
both team and individual races were the closest in many years. Ryan Wilson
(Wichita Heights) edged Lawrence's Dylan McClain down the final stretch to
win in 16:33, McClain 16:34, with Shawnee Mission Northwest's Will Polk right
behind at 16:35. Washburn's Rural's Matt Swedlund followed at 16:39, with
David Williams (Wichita West-16:42), Tyler Roark (Hutchinson 16:48), Ryan
Hopper (Shawnee Mission Northwest 16;48), Bo Clark (Wichita Heights 16:51),
Justin Riley (Lawrence 16:53) and Jason Pugh (Shawnee Mission Northwest 16:56)
rounding out the top ten. Teamwise Shawnee Mission
Northwest won their eighth consecutive title, but not without a fierce
battle from season long nemesis Lawrence. Northwest used three runners in
the top 10 to score 77 points to Lawrence's 89. Lawrence Free State followed
closely with 95. Topeka Washburn Rural was fourth with 109. Shawnee Mission
East (139), Emporia (149), Wichita West (150), St. Thomas Aquinas (195), Derby
(215), Olathe East (218), Hutchinson (257) and Maize (257) completed the leading

17;24 6A GIRLS: Amy Hastings (Leavenworth)
blasted the field, running to a 30 second victory over Taryn May (Blue Valley
Northwest) with a dominating 11:29 performance. Hastings pulled into the lead
by the first quarter, and simply continued to hammer away at the field, increasing
her lead throughout. Running smoothly and in control the entire race, Hastings
completed an undefeated season. In the pack, the
race shook out as expected between the front-running of Blue Valley Northwest
and Olathe South, and the packing of Shawnee Mission Northwest and Shawnee
Mission East. When the scoring was finished, Van Rose's Shawnee Mission
Northwest Cougars had defended their team title with a 16 second split
between 1-5 and 50 points. Blue Valley Northwest, with May in second and Kristina
Rand in seventh, was second with 66 points. Olathe South, with Amy Gouchnour
fifth and defending champion Alysha Galbraith sixth placed third with 130
and Shawnee Mission East followed with 145. The top four teams all came from
the rugged Shawnee Mission regional. Manhattan followed in fifth with 159
points, and Emporia (159), Lawrence (168), Lawrence Free State (181), Dodge
City (225), Maize (225), Derby (274) and Hutchinson (280) completed team scoring. TOP

BOYS: Great Bend repeated as boys team champs at Rimrock Farm,
while Liberal's Justin Alexander used a steady effort to draw away from the field
for a fifteen second victory. Alexander, a regional champ last week, took the
lead in the race's first quarter and steadily drew away from the following pack
over Rimrock's trails and hills to win in 16;47. Sophomore Tanner Marshall lead
Great Bend to the title, placing second in 17:02 with fellow western Kansas sophomore
Scott Rome (Hays) third in 17:08. Teamwise Great Bend placed it's top six in the
top twenty team scorers to pull away from Wichita Bishop Carroll 54 to 77. Buhler
was third with 104, followed by Hays (106), Liberal (109), Blue Valley West (142),

5A GIRLS: Trisa Nickoley (Shawnee Heights)
repeated as individual champ in 11:52, but not without some challenge from Blue
Valley West's Elle Pishney (second in 12:02). The two red-clan runners repeatedly
challenged each other over the two mile course with Pishney pushing the numerous
hills and Nickoley appearing to respond. Nickoley made her definitive move coming
off the Billy Mills ascent, and steadily pulled away on the Jim Ryun skyline.
Team wise Great Bend (77) again repeated as champs, with first-year school
Blue Valley West taking second (91). Shawnee Mission Bishop Miege (an East Kansas
League rival of BV West) was third at 130, with Buhler (135), Goddard (140), Wichita
Bishop Carroll (151), Shawnee Heights (152), Paola (176), Topeka Seaman (198),

this year's deepest individual state field, Noonan took command from the start
to pull away from long time rival Joe Moore (Clay Center). Noonan finished in
15:44 for the hilly 5k course, with Moore at 16:02. Jordan LaCore (Topeka Hayden-16:29)
