Highlights by Andrew Hudson
In temperatures that were 30-40 degrees warmer than
the previous week's region meets, many athletes dropped out from
high humidity and near-80 degree temperatures which made the tough,
hilly course a bear. Good times were hard to come by as the course
ran 30 seconds slower than normal on an already slow course. Subtract
at least 45 seconds for boys and 60 seconds for girls to get an
accurate comparison to Charlotte's Foot Locker course.

- Girls - Harrison 28 (1-2-5-6-14). Michelle Brewer, Harrison

of the day
as national powers Brookwood and Joe Thorne aserted their
dominance. Joe ran
15:48 in the heat and the Broncos went 3-11-12-14-20-23-28
overall to place all
7 in the top 30 and demolish the competition by almost 100
points (59 to
Walton's 151). Dacula surprised many by going 2-4-9, but had
their 4 and 5
runners way back and finished 3rd by one point.
Harrison's girls made a strong case for a national ranking
by putting 4 in
the top 7 with sister seniors Michelle and Jessica Brewer
going 1-2. The Hoyas
scored 28 points to defeat regional power Lakeside by 50 points.
Michelle's
19:39 was the best performance of the day. North Gwinnett's
track state
champion Kathleen Turchin was one of the favorites but had
to be pulled from the
race with 500m to go in severe heat distress. She ended up
recovering well but
could not finish. Harrison's 20:19 scoring average was the
best of the day on
the brutal course.
