Georgia Cross Country 2001

State Meet

11/3/01 at Carrollton GA - 5k

results from Carrollton Schools site - 5A - 4A - 3A - 2A - 1A -

Highlights by Andrew Hudson

In temperatures that were 30-40 degrees warmer than the previous week's region meets, many athletes dropped out from high humidity and near-80 degree temperatures which made the tough, hilly course a bear. Good times were hard to come by as the course ran 30 seconds slower than normal on an already slow course. Subtract at least 45 seconds for boys and 60 seconds for girls to get an accurate comparison to Charlotte's Foot Locker course.

  • 5A
    • Boys - Brookwood 59. Joe Thorne, Lakeside-Dekalb 15:49
    • Girls - Harrison 28 (1-2-5-6-14). Michelle Brewer, Harrison 19:39
    • The Boys race saw the best team and individual performances of the day
as national powers Brookwood and Joe Thorne aserted their dominance. Joe ran
15:48 in the heat and the Broncos went 3-11-12-14-20-23-28 overall to place all
7 in the top 30 and demolish the competition by almost 100 points (59 to
Walton's 151). Dacula surprised many by going 2-4-9, but had their 4 and 5
runners way back and finished 3rd by one point.
Harrison's girls made a strong case for a national ranking by putting 4 in
the top 7 with sister seniors Michelle and Jessica Brewer going 1-2. The Hoyas
scored 28 points to defeat regional power Lakeside by 50 points. Michelle's
19:39 was the best performance of the day. North Gwinnett's track state
champion Kathleen Turchin was one of the favorites but had to be pulled from the
race with 500m to go in severe heat distress. She ended up recovering well but
could not finish. Harrison's 20:19 scoring average was the best of the day on
      the brutal course.
  • 4A
    • Boys - Oconee County 73. David Kawa, Oconee County 16:41
    • Girls - Marist 25 (1-2-4-7-11). Christy Brewer, Marist 19:41.
    • Marist's girls were as impressive as Westminster's and Harrison's with
another low score of 25 points to take another championship, their 4th in a row
and 5th of the last 6. Marist's Christy Brewer and freshman Ena Leufroy led the
War Eagles (19:41 and 19:43 for a 1-2 finish). Oconee County Boys won their
last title in AAAA before moving up to AAAAA next year with 73 points to defeat
Woodward Academy's 93. It was the second title in 4 years for the Warriors as
their own David Kawa took individual honors in 16:40.
  • 3A
    • Boys - Westminster 46 (Monroe 55). Charles Slick, Lovett 17:15.01
    • Girls - Westminster 24 (1-2-3-6-12). Caroline Hagedorn, Westminster 20:28.75
    • Westminster continued their domination by taking boys and girls team titles
for the umpteenth year in a row. The girls have now won 10 in a row and 17 of
the last 18. The boys have won 6 in a row and 12 of the last 15. The girls
went 1-2-3 and scored 24 to beat Riverwood with 92. The boys had a nail-biter
with Monroe Area 46-55. Connie Heiskell won the girls in 20:28 and Charles
Slick of Lovett won the boys 17:15.
  • 2A
    • Boys - Cartersville 99 (Decatur 106). Brett Womack, Cartersville 16:34
    • Girls - Southeast Bulloch 83 (Pace Acad 85). Jennifer Johnson, Grt Atlanta Chr 20:10
    • In the only races not affected by the heat because of an 8:30 starting time, Southeast Bulloch came up from Statesboro to shock many in the girls race taking the title by 2 points over Pace Academy of Atlanta. Previous #1 Chapel Hill ended up 4th. Greater Atlanta Christian School's fabulous freshman won the individual title by 21 seconds over 2000 champion Jenna Downey of Holy Innocents. Cartersville scored 99 points to sweep the boys titles with individual champion Brett Womack winning in 16:34 over Decatur's Sam Gillespie (16:50).
  • 1A
    • Boys - Wesleyan 29 (Landmark 34). Cristan Duvall, Wesleyan 16:41
    • Girls - Wesleyan 35. Lauren Blankenship, Wesleyan 20:03
    • Wesleyan swept all championships for a dominating performance. The boys
upset previous #1 Landmark 29-34 and also had the individual champion Cristan
Duvall (junior) for the second year in a row. Not to be outdone, Junior Lauren
Blankenship ran one of the fastest times of the day (20:03) to take the girls
championship as her team also won with 35 points over Athens Academy (75).
