Boys

Columbia used it’s sprints and middle distance runners to propel them to
it’s first state championship under Coach David Halliday. In 4 short years,
Coach Halliday provided the guidance to the program which now has a
district, region and state champ trophy.
Not to be outdone, Flagler Palm Coast used it’s five entrants to take a
surprising second place.

Event 2 Boys High Jump

Entering the competition, I failed to mention 6’10” jumper Dewayne Jenkins
of Flagler Plam Coast despite watching him clear his best at the Eye of the
Tiger Invite a month ago. Coach Hopfe made sure I knew of my mistake and
used it as bulletin board material during the week to inspire his explosive
jumping charge.

Jenkins entered the competition at 6’4” and proceeded to make that height
and each successive height through 6’10” on his first attempt. A physically
imposing Sullivan of Aquinas was able to equal Jenkins clearence at 6’10”
and left fans asking the question, “How?!”

Jenkins had one good attempt on his third jump and Sullivan needed the
clearence to win as he had more misses at lower heights. He didn’t and the
victorious Jenkins pumped his fist at his coach who celebrated in the
stands.

Jenkins: “ I was kind of nervous coming in because there were three guys who
had jumped 6’10” and I was one of them. I knew I had to at least PR or jump
7’0” which I almost did, so I’m not surprised at all[with the victory]. I’m
done [for the year].”

Event 6 Boys Long Jump

Kevin Marion (left) has been on a tear this year. He won the national indoor meet
and then backed up his huge 25’ jump at last week’s region with a state
record 25’5” in a legal wind(+1.7).
Sporting his national indoor championship ring, Marion was matter of fact
regarding his record jump.“ Temporary. Records are meant to be broken. I
gave my best. I felt good today. I conquered something I wanted to do since
the 9th grade.”
He passed after his big jump and said he would have continued to jump had
rival Dermillo Wise beat his jump.
“ I’ll compete at the National Outdodors meet in Raleigh. I’ll run the 100m
and 200m,but I’ll focus on the long jump.”
He said his next goal is to break 26’.

Event 10 Boys Discus Throw

Entering the final throw Octavien had the best throw. Stockbarger, runner-up
last year as a freshman and also sporting a 16-0 tennis record at #4 (at over
6’ and weighing in the 220’s, he has to be the largest tennis player in high
school) stepped up and popped a 170’ and 170’2” throw on his 4th and 5th to
put some pressure on Octavien. Octavien responded on his 5th throw
launching the platter 178’6” to secure the victory.
Octavien: “Today was a good day. About 15 or 20 minutes before they called
first call for the discus, me and my coach we went out and did a couple of
drills for about 5 minutes. Things have been going good ever since
regionals. Last year I threw 150 something for sixth place. Me and my coach
have been working hard. I was in first place the whole way. I got worried some before the finals
because I know they can throw.Stockbarger has been beating me all year and
Tavares beat me at regionals so I knew they could throw. They did a good job
today. Yes, it feels good to win.”

Event 14 Boys 4x800 Meter Relay

Columbia began their state title run by putting it together for a great
victory here, but Coach Halliday was hoping for more.” They need someone to
push them. They just haven’t been pushed yet.”
Vazquez eased through the finish line with a 1:56.4 split to place 2nd in
the second section, but Sean Burris of Rockledge, rebounding from sickness
last week, ran well to win the first heat as his team’s time held up for 2nd
place overall.

Event 16 Boys 110 Meter Hurdles (High)

Dermillo Wise

Wise came in seeking four victories, but ended up with two. Here, he ran
away with it shaking his arms in triumph.
WISE: “ After that I went back and sat down and relaxed for a while. I had
to come and get it in the 1 and the 3. That was the only way I was going
make up for it. I wanted to be champion in all four. But sometimes, you
can’t have your way. I’m glad for Kevin. It was a good meet. I guess when
you want something too bad, it doesn’t come true. “
“ Yes. I haven’t decided yet[ on a college]. I’m going to those[Golden South
and National Scholastic].”

Event 18 Boys 100 Meter Dash

The compact Robinson got out quickly and held off the late run by the what
seemed like the entire field to eeke out the victory.

Frederick Robinson: “Starting out. I jumped out in front of the pack. 40m
into the race, I felt the pain and I laid back a little bit and started
running with the pack. But after awhile, at 70m or 80m, the pain went away
and I gave it all I had in the end. It was so close at the finish, I didn’t
know who won until we got to the awards stand. If you asked me then exactly
after the 100 who won, I couldn’t tell you. To hear my name called to the
award stand was even better because the longer the wait, the better.”
“Our school has a rich tradition[ they have produced state 100m champ Fred
Taylor and Reidel Anthony who are both now in the NFL] in sports. But in
track and field, no one had ever won state back to back.. two years
consecutive. I won the 100. I was the first to do that in our school.”

Event 20 Boys 1600 Meter Run

Vazquez (left) and Hassen have been dueling it out all season and with the other entrants the field was the strongest of all the classifications. Lakewood Ranch’s Walsh led the first 200m before Hassen took over for the next 100m. Hassen lost the lead and at the first lap, 61, was moving up
again. Hassen regained the lead and led through 800m in 2:07 with Vazquez right on his heels.
600 to go and Vazquez took the lead for 100m as Hassen challenged on the outside finally getting back the lead at the bell(3:09.90). Vazquez covered the move and on the second curve struck charging into the lead. Hassen fought to hold on, but Vazquez continued to accelerate and by 200m was in full flight and still pulling away. With 50m to go Vazquez looked back
seeing that Hassen would not catch him and then eased up on the throttle
crossing the line with a new state record. His 58.9 last 400m and 29.4 last
200m splits were the fastest of all the classifications thus far.

Vazquez: “The first thing in my mind was Steve Hassen, of course. He’s a
good friend of mine. We talk. But then on the track it comes down to
business. It’s great to race against him. It was very hard to win. It’s not
very easy. It was, honestly, very hard to beat him, but it paid off.”

ON HASSEN TAKING THE EARLY LEAD
“ He’s done it before. I’ve raced him plenty of times before so I kind of
know how he races. I’m sure he knows how I race too. It really didn’t
surprise me too much, but I still had to chase him. It was hard.”

ON THE STATE RECORD
“ That’s exciting. I was not planning on getting ths state record, but it
just happened to be that way. So it’s very exciting.”

ON MOISE JOSPEH, THE FORMER STATE 1600M RECORD HOLDER.
“ I’ve never met him. I’ve seen him up close before, but when I go to
college... so he’s a great runner as well.”

Hassen: “Coming into the state meet, that was the race I was really focusing
on, the mile. I knew that Sam Vazquez was a great runner and I knew I was
going to get the best competition in the mile. I knew that in order to beat
Sam, I was going to have to push the pace. So I took the lead after the
first 200m. I came through my first spilt in 62. And then in the second lap
I wanted to keep the pace up. And I came through in 2:07 which was a little
slower than what I wanted to do. Then the third lap , Sam passed me on the
backstretch. I just relaxed. We came through three laps at about... I’m not
really sure. Then I passed Sam back with one lap to go to try to really
hammer him so that his kick was gone. So when we came up to the 200m, he got
the lead. And that guy is an incredible runner. He’s got incredible speed
and he just got me the last 200m. He was really able to pour it on and my
legs were a little tired. I just didn’t have it at the end. Sam deserves
all the credit in the world. “

Event 22 Boys 4x100 Meter Relay

Glades Central came in with high hopes, but poor times. In the prelims, they
again ran poorly qualifying in the final position and drawing lane 1.
Riding a high off his 100m victory and drawing inspiration from the rich
school track tradition, Robinson powered his way to victory.

Robinson: “ We came in as the underdogs. But like I told everyone... they
had their heads down because we had lane 1. Like I told them, lanes didn’t
matter. As long as we were close, we were going to win it in the end.”

Defending 4A state champ, Carter takes his first of two track victories by
taking the lead early and pinning a loss on 3A defending state champ, soph
Mario Hughley.

Carter: “ I was going to run my race either way[ referring to a possible
challenge from fellow soph Hughley]. Somewhat[ pleased], I could have done
better.”

Hughley: “ In the end I just kind of faded back. I was trying to keep up
with him until. I was coming for him in the end, but he just pulled away. I
was coming for him. I ran my hardest race.I was trying to get it down to a
46. I’m happy with it[my time].”

Event 28 Boys 800 Meter Run

Vazquez had run a state record and his fastest 1600m 55 minutes earlier and
had run few competitive 800m races this year.Columbia teammates Phil Daniels
and Robert Cooper’s 800m and 4x400m speed provided the setting for an
intriguing match up.
Vazquez raced to the lead hitting the 400m mark in a reported 54. Daniels
tried valiantly to make contact and pass Vazquez, but Vazquez responded down
the backstretch to keep Daniels at bay. Cooper lying back the first lap
began to move on the leaders down the backstretch.
200m to go and Vazquez put his head down and looked for more from his tiring
legs. Daniels relying on his late race finish which has worked well this
season kept charging, but was never able to pull up on Vazquez. Vazquez
continued to drive for the finish as his legs began to fail him and his face
showed the strain of the effort and the 1600m win run earlier. He held on
smiling as he crossed the finish line.

Sam Vazquez( After his double): “Double. It’s the first time ever to win in
the 1600m and the 800m. I’m very excited to have done that today.
“ I know I wasn’t the favorite in that race. Phillip Daniels was, of course,
the favorite there. I had a really bad lane at the beginning. I was in lane
9. I just tried hard the whole way and it worked. It’s exciting to win the
800m. That’s a hard race to win. Really hard.”

Phillip Daniels: “ I thought I had him ‘cause the the first 200 of the last
lap, I picked it up and he picked it up, but so I just slowed down. I know I
got a kick, but not as strong as his was. When I got over here[pointing at
the last 200] I gave it all I had, but he was too far ahead of me. No sir[I
didn’t expect him to be that fast].
“No sir, I usually don’t take the lead until the last 150 to go. If I was to
change something, I would have pushed it instead of waiting for him.”

Robert Cooper: “I figured a 1:53 would win the whole thing, but I got third.
Philip and Vazquez were just getting on it. I tried to go with them, but
they pulled away the last 100. I was trying to push the last three, but I
kind of fell behind a little bit. It was still a good race, It was fun.”

Event 30 Boys 200 Meter Dash

Xavier Carter ran the turn hard and pulled away for the victory.

Carter: “ I planned to do better than I did. But the prelims, I also ran
hard and that took a little energy away from me.”

Of note: Defending 2001 state 200m champion and 100m m runner-up, Chasio
Thomas of Kathleen was competing in the 4x1, 100m, 200m and HJ and stood at
the HJ pit finals during the 200m prelims. An official came over and told
him he had his 200m prelim in 15 minutes and needed him to decide to jump or
wait to jump afterwards.”I’ll jump,” he responded.
Taking his position he eyed the bar which was at 6’4” for 5 seconds and
proceeded to clear it by 2-4 inches, getting off the pit and walking away
nonchalantly towards the 200m start line. 10 minutes later, there he was
charging down the homestretch to take third in his heat.

Event 32 Boys 3200 Meter Run

Ryan Deak decided not to run in the days leading up th 3A state final so the
favorite role landed squarely in Hassen’s lap.
Freshman Jeff Masterson led the first lap in 70. “ I looked around and
thought, where is everybody?” Florida Southern College bound Tyrone Bell
took the pacing chores hitting the 800m in 2:23 as the pack bunched up
behind him. Favorites Bell, Hassen, Stewart,Wilson, Beights and Cook hit the
1200 in 3:33. the next lap saw Stewart taking them through the 1600m in
4:43.8. Looking to shake things up, Stewart surged and the field was quickly
strung out. Hassen was the only one to cover the move and the race was on.
The next lap found Stewart leading Hassen in 5:53 and continuing to keep the
pace quick, but Hassen looked easy and in the next 100m passed Stewart and
in typical fashion began his long unrelenting drive for home. He hit the
next lap in 7:04 rolled out the last two laps in an effortless 2:14(4:35
last 1600m) to finish off the night with the fastest 1600m/3200m double of
all the classications.
Tyrone Bell and AJ Wilson caught the struggling Stewart to take the next two
places.

HASSEN:“ Because Ryan Deak wasn’t running, I knew I had a good chance to
win. All the main competitors who were running in the two mile did the
mile.
My coach told me to relax, go out with the leaders, and just when I felt
good get the lead and put the hammer down. He didn’t really want me to push
the pace in the beginning, relax too much and then have some guy going after
me with two laps to go or something.
I went out with the leaders and sat behind whoever was in first and with two
and half laps to go, I put a big move on and just kept trying to push it
with two laps and I was able to win.
Not my fastest time, but I ran an incredible mile and I felt good with it.
All I really wanted to do was come through with the win. I guess that’s
pretty good.”

Glades Central relay team

Event 34 Boys 4x400 Meter Relay

Ribault was the favorite as region 1 provided the most likely competition.
With it’s 3:16 at regions and Mario Hughley on the anchor, they seemed
unbeatable.
Glades Central exploped to an early lead with a first leg of 49.7. They
continued to lead down the backstretch of the second leg as the others
chased unable to close the gap. Glades was able to maintain their lead with
it’s 48.7 second leg.
The third leg had Glades in a comfortable lead, but St. Thomas’ Dasilva
made a charge down the backstrecth and brought the others with him. Glades
49.9 was enough as their lead began to stretch again entering the final
handoff.
Glades was now in the lead and Ribault was nowhere on the radar. Lincoln and
St. Thomas tried to close the gap, but Glades closing 47. 4 leg was good
enough for the win. Behind them, a hard charging Phil Daniels used his 48.4
split to propel him into second place and seal Columbia’s state title.
Xavier Carter got the stick and ran a 46.2 leg for his team falling to the
track afterwards and receiving medical attention.
Carter: “ I caught a stomach cramp and in my chest.

Event 1 Girls High Jump

Utecht had a huge task for the day qualifying for two field events, the high

the 4x100m. After winning the long jump, Utecht shuttled between the hurdles
qualifying, the high jump qualifying and finals and the 400m relay
qualifying. In a surprise, Kwonya Ferguson cleared 5’8” to win the
title as the favored Utecht no heighted. Utecht was visibly upset after her
miss and threw her shoe in disgust.
Utecht: “ The high jump. I really wanted to do good in that the most. I ran the
hurdle race before and after that my legs were completely shot and I could

Tampa Plant made it interesting, but came up one leg too short. Still they
ran 10 seconds faster then their previous best.

favorites laying back in the pack.
Valeria Rodriguez took the pacing chores at 800m hit in 2:34 with Hall,
Magloire, Devalcourt, and Miley following.
A slow 79 lap (3:54) found Devalcourt trying to get a jump, but with 200m to
go Magloire led with Rodriguez and Hall trailing. At the top of the
straight, Magloire was clear, Hall gaining, and Rodriguez fading. Hall kept
charging and at the end she was able to pass and then pull away from
Magloire. A huge win for Hall.

Event 21 Girls 4x100 Meter Relay

Aquinas’ was beaten in the final leg of the prelims and with Richards
competing in three events, their chances at winning did not look good. But a
change in the anchor leg in the finals resulted in a mild surprise for this
track power.
Utecht: “We didn’t run our anchor leg [in the prelims]. We put in a new
girl. We had a pretty good idea of where we would be when we got to our
anchor leg and it was just a matter of us keeping our first place if we were
there. We didn’t quite know exactly what to expect, but we thought we could
get in the top three. We’ve been actually training hard for this all year,so
no, it wasn’t[ a surprise]. But we’re pretty excited about it.”
Utecht collect her third gold medl and looks to the future.
“ Golden South. I think that’s the one I’m going to do next.If do good in
that, I’ll probably get invited to the Golden West. And during the summer,
I’ll do Junior Nationals and if I don’t do that, I’ll do the Junior
Olympics. I’m very excited for[the World Youth Games]. I’m really going to
try for that.”

Event 23 Girls 400 Meter Dash

Sanya Richards had Williams in the lane outside of her. They ran down the
backstretch, Richards running even with Williams. She continued to run never
seeming to really dig down as she pulled away easily and hit the tape in a
state record time. Defending 3A state champ Williams was able to hold on for
second with 2A defending state champ Davis making a late run to finish a
strong third.

Event 25 Girls 300 Meter Hurdles (Low)

Brown looked effortless as she eased her way through the final meters of the
prelims. In the finals, things didn’t go as planned for her, but she still
came away with the win.
Brown: “ It was good. I wanted to do 42. But I guess I did what I had to do.
I’m kind of disappointed about it. I’m just going to try.... and have to
train harder next year.
I’m going to do summer track. Try to get my time down. I’ll practice for the
100 hurdles. In June, I’ll go to Auburn and check it out.”

               1 Contrene Brown 11 Fort Lauderd 43.14 10

Event 27 Girls 800 Meter Run

Magloire and Rodriguez were both expecting to have a win entering the 800m
final, but they would have to battle it out here for their first title of
the night.
At 400m, Magloire had the lead in 66. Rodriguez followed behind her as she
fought to keep her hopes alive. Magloire would not yield. A sore throat
weakened Rodriguez faded and a late run by Hunter made it interesting, but
Magloire was able to come away with a title.
Christina Clark of Gainesville High ran unchallenged in the 1st section and
runs a 2:18.32 which would have possibly put her in contention had she been
in the second faster heat.

Event 31 Girls 3200 Meter Run

Last year, Clay’s Karen Edmonds ran a best of 21:15 minutes for three miles
and finished 42nd at her region meet in xc. During track she broke the 6
minute barrier for the 1600m for the first time with a 5:37 and had personal
bests of 13:23, 3200m, and 2:34, 800m.
A new coach, Joe Ingallinera, convinced her to change her diet, her training
and her outlook during the summer and the cast was set for a big
improvement.
Reflecting on how poor her eating habits were she said, “ I can’t believe I
ate that way.” She lost 25 pounds as she upped her mileage and had a dietary
nutritionist assist her with the proper diet her increased training
demanded.
In xc she ran 19:17 to place 5th in the 3A state meet and then early in the
track season, she handed Footlocker xc finalist and 1600m state leader Kara
Scanlin her first and only defeat of the season in the 1600m running a 5:16
at the Bulldog Classic.
Before the state finals, she had a big dilemna. An injury after her victory
over Scanlin at the Bulldog Classic left her unable to do the speedwork
needed for the mile. She had the strength, but with three others capable of
running low 5’s, she had a big decision to make.
She made the right one as she pulled away late from a suprsingly strong
Moffenbier to win the title. The reversal of fortune to titlist was
complete.
Edmonds: “I went out the relaxed the first mile and then the 5th lap I went
a little crazy. I went a little too early, but that’s ok. It was the first
time I had ever ran it[the two mile] hard. It was hard. That was my best two
mile... EVER. I think I can go a lot faster.”
