Troy State 11/12/01 -- Most of the State of Alabama had been experiencing cool nights and brisk mornings, but on this day by 10 am the sun was beaming and the air was very dry. The 5K course winds through a beautiful golf course on the Trojan’s campus and offers many challenges. Many of the runners in each race experienced difficulty with hydration and handling the unseasonable warmth.

"A lot of the lead runners had problems because of the effort that they were giving," St. Paul’s Coach Jim Tate suggested. Coach Tate was proud of the performance his young team displayed as his Lady Saints finished runner-up in the 4A-5A division to a deserving team from Scottsboro in what was another "Battle of Rivals." Coach Tate’s girl’s teams at St. Paul’s won 16 consecutive State Championships before being upset by Scottsboro by a single point in 1999 that broke the streak. Last year St. Paul’s set a State record when it averaged 20:20 per runner led by Margaret Martin and State Champion Tara Lenn. The Saints brought the blue trophy back to Mobile with an exciting victory over the very respected Wildcats.

This year everyone knew it would be more of the same with Scottsboro having the edge from more experience on the young and rebuilding SPS runners from the Spring Hill area of West Mobile. The large crowd of screaming supporters cheered loudly for all of the runners as the race between St. Paul’s and Scottsboro began to unfold. Through the first two-miles it was very close but Scottsboro had the better team on this day and it proved to be enough for the 4A-5A State Title.

St. Paul’s gave it all it had behind the leadership of Freshman Tara Lenn. Tara won the race to claim her second consecutive State Championship. Tara held off a determined Linda Scarvada of Cullman for the victory when she crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 14 seconds. Scardava was second in 20:26. Tara’s time was slower than expected mostly because of the conditions as well as not having a pack of runners to join in with the push. Miss Lenn was well aware of the potential that Scottsboro was bringing so she was happy to gain the victory over her friendly rivals. Jessi Gross (20:45) and Emily Green (20:56) of Scottsboro finished third and fourth while seventh-grader Lacey Wright was seventh in 21:14. St. Paul’s leader Junior Neesa Peterson was running very tough as usual before experiencing difficulty about 50 meters from the finish. "Even if Neesa would have finished Scottsboro still would have been ahead of us in points," Coach Tate admitted. Eighth-grader Katelyn Simpson of St. Paul’s finished fifth in 21:04.15 and was 16% of a second ahead of local rival freshman Rebecca Willett of UMS (21:04.31). Rachel Bramlett (21:26) and Tammy Freeman (21:32) were 9th and 12th to round out the Scottsboro top five. St. Paul’s seventh-grader Callie Freeman (21:44) finished 15th overall to gain All-State honors while eighth-grader Maggie Delaney (21:47) just missed the award as she finished 17th. Senior Julie Gamble (21:46) of Scottsboro was so close also finishing 16th while Jill Bryant was the seventh finisher for the Wildcats. Junior Clara Holmes (22:05) and seventh-grader Emily Collins (22:21) rounded out the St. Paul’s squad.

Scottsboro won with 35 points followed by St. Paul’s (58), UMS-Wright (94), Oak Mountain (105) and Cullman with 126.

In the Boys 4A-5A competition Scott Fuqua of Oak Mountain used tactical strategy to overcome and defeat Tyler Stanfield of Homewood in a race of Alabama’s best male high school runners. Fuqua trailed for two-miles before taking control and winning with a time of 15:54. Stanfield finished with a fast time of 16:20.

Sophomore John Brigham led St. Paul’s finishing fifth overall in 17:10. He was followed by Junior Tyler Lenn, 24th in 18:35 and Freshman Alex Pappas, 34th in 19:05. Robert Shreve (20:00), J.P. Surrouen of Finland (20:15), 8th grader Will Cadden (21:01) and 7th-grader William Latta (22:00) were the remaining Saints that finished fifth in the boys division.

Oak Mountain nipped Briarwood 40 to 42 for the Boys 4A-5A Championship. Scottsboro was third with 91 points while Fort Payne finished fourth with 140 points.

Jennifer Thompson of Arab won the girls 6A State Championship with a time of 19:20. Freshman Lane Schlitz of Hewitt-Trussville was second in 19:30 and Tara Enebak of Auburn was third in 19:45.

Laura Friedline of Murphy was 12th in 20:48 and was the only Mobilian to make the 6A All-State team.

Ryan Lenaghan and Todd McCarty of McGill and Steve Mouton of Murphy made the 6A All-State team.
