The meet was another huge success with a lot of great races to match the wonderful weather we had. In the girls varsity race, KU's Katie Leary ,North Medford's Danielle Jordan, Crater's Kendal Nelson, and newcomer Lindsey Kirschman of Enterprise ( Freshman 800m State Meet competitor- 2:11) battled for the top spot.
At the 1 1/2 mi marker all four girls were packed together with Lindsay leading the way. As the came up on the dam, Lindsey had a slight lead of about 10 meters on Katie Leary. As they approached the final 200 meters it looked like Lindsey would take her first cross country meet at the top , but inexperience showed as Lindsey stopped short of the finish line with victory arms in the air, when veteran Katie Leary used her experience to pass Lindsay in the final steps across the finish line to take first place. Katie won in a time of 14:51, Lindsey 2nd place in 14:52, Danielle Jordan was third in 15:00, over the 4k course. In the varsity boys race, the top two favored runners ran true to our expectations. Kevin Pelligrino of Klamath Union and Andy Wright of Ashland battled the 5K course for the top spot with determination and style.
Kevin and Andy were neck and neck as they passed by the 1 1/2 marker. As they crossed the dam , Kevin seemed to have the race under his control. However, Andy and teammate David Morgan were starting to gain some ground. As they came up from the soccer field with 600 meters to go, Kevin showed his strength by pulling away and then holding his pace through to the finish line in a time of 16:02.
