Roth & Klech achieve state indoor & meet records!
Roth's 'extra' attempt nets lifetime-best 17-04.25 in boys pole vault while
Klech's strong closing in first-ever pentathlon rallies him to victory over Prentice

Day 1 California recap (full results underneath the story)

By Richard Gonzalez -- Editor, DyeStatCal
(LANDOVER, MD) -- Pole vaulter Scott Roth nailed it right on the money; he wasn't lucky, he was downright good.
Pentathlete David Klech admitted to being rusty. Yet he was as polished as can be when the pressure was on.
By day's end, Roth and Klech combined for a herculean 12 hours of work and emotional roller coasters galore before emerging as national champions and meet record holders during opening-day action at the 16th annual Nike Indoor Nationals gala. California athletes compiled two gold medals, a silver and a bronze on Saturday, while a pair of female dashers positioned themselves for additional hardware on Sunday, when they are joined by more Golden Staters in final-day action of the blockbuster event which will crown 29 more Nike Indoor Nationals champions.
Roth, the two-time defending California state from Granite Bay HS, helped cap the deepest indoor prep vault field in this nation's history, riding a series of third-attempt triumphs at 16-08 and 17-00 to inspire a capacity crowd at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex. But the lithe University of Washington-bound aerialist saved his best theatrics for last -- with plenty of perfectly timed assistance from a cadre of vault aficionados gawking from the stands.
With Roth facing yet another third attempt at a nosebleed height of 17-04.25 and rivals Jordan Scott and Mike Morrison still alive in the competition (Californian Greg Woepse bowed out at 15-00.25 to place eighth), the composed senior stormed down the runway, planted firm and then rocked upside down and toward the crossbar, only to displace the object off the pegs in seemingly ending his competition. Spirits falling but still proud of his evening's work, Roth flashed a warm smile and a gesture of appreciation toward his supporters in the stands. A few of those fans, however, were too busy studying something to notice him.
Perched up in the stands some 50 feet away, a group of spectators quickly pointed out to Roth's dad and coach (Curt) that the vault standards were clearly misaligned. The coach replied that he did not notice at first, but one in the group quickly pointed out that the standards had not been altered since the attempt, and the proof still existed. In a moment's time, the elder Roth and fans quickly gained the attention of vault officials, who checked and then dutifully confirmed the error, as one standard was placed all the way forward while the other remained some 40 centimeters in arrear, thus creating an unfairly skewed positioning of the crossbar. After brief consultation, the officials ruled that Roth deserved to have a clean third attempt, thus authoritizing the extra trial.
As he had done twice before in the competition with his national title bid hanging in the balance, Roth then cleanly negotiated the height, sending the crowd and a horde of vaulters into a frenzy. Just like that, Roth had been given new life, seized the opportunity, vaulted into the lead, and was then staring at his ultimate goal: a national indoor record attempt at 17-07. With the energy stores now dissipating and the emotional reservoirs tapped beyond belief, Roth made a trio of concerted attempts (at least one with the needed height) at clearing rarified air, but missed on all three trials yet still settling for the title. ... and enough material to share stories for a lifetime.
"That was pretty scary," gushed Roth with a smile. "I'm not one to leave it up to third attempts, but I've been pretty clutch when I've needed it. Today was just a whole new level and I surprised myself.  It was going back and forth between a few of us for the win, and I was just fortunate to come through when I needed it."
Roth admitted he had no idea the standards had been incorrectly placed on his third bid at 17-04.25, as it was impossible to notice from both the start of the runway as well as when skying over the bar.
"I'd have never known," quipped Roth. "I lucked out that people noticed and told the officials in time before the standards were moved."
But was he also lucky to be given a fourth attempt?
"I don't think so," he replied. "I definitely was getting the height today. I was well over the bar so many times, but kept clipping it a few times with different body parts. The height was always there, and everything kept falling into place on the third attempts. It was the third attempt at (17-04.25) that the bar was off. Given how high I was going the whole day, the feeling I had was that I was deserving of going this high and it was going to work out one way or another. I gave it all I had. It was 120% effort."
Roth will somehow try to top this miraculous 260-minute stretch of athletic excellence on Sunday, when he competes in the National Scholastic Indoor Championships in New York City. The Roths were to make the four-hour drive through the night en route to the Big Apple, as the marathon competition and subsequent awards ceremony did not conclude until nearly 9 p.m.

KLECH IS CLUTCH, NABS TITLE AS AMERICA'S BEST INDOOR ATHLETE
Eighty minutes before the start of his first-ever pentathlon competition, it could have been presumed that David Klech would have been at the arena, limbering up for a five-event challenge that would have him leaping, throwing, bouncing and racing against America's best.
           Instead, he was snoring.
"Up late and sleeping in," laughed his dad. "He's your typical teenager."
           Uh... no.
The typical teenager does not scamper to the finish line in 8.14 seconds in his first indoor hurdle race of the year. The typical teenager does not soar 6 feet, 9 inches in an event he's done sparingly during the winter. And the typical teenager does not race the 1000 meters in 2:35.99 to blow the wheels off the competition.
As a result, Klech did what no other teenager had done in the 16-year history of the meet. The senior from California HS in San Ramon racked up a meet record 3,980 points (including 1777 points in the final two events alone!) and rallied from a deficit to Diamond Ranch's Terry Prentice (second in 3756) to win the Nike Indoors title.
With both Californians still having their body clocks operate on West Coast time (the first challenge in Saturday's five-event discipline was at 8:50 a.m., or 5:50 a.m. on California time), they were each rusty in some of their specialty events.... which speaks volumes as to just how good each could have been against their competition had their bodies been more rested and the pentathlon been allowed to start a few hours later into the day.
"It was definitely tiring out there, moreso because of the time difference than because of the events," said Klech. "I was a little rusty in some events that I haven't been focusing on yet this season anyway. But the lack of sleep just added to it."
Klech found himself waking up quickly after clipping two flights of hurdles in the 110-meter highs, but still recorded the fastest time among all pentathletes in 8.14 seconds, worth 947 points on the scoring tables and a 54-point lead over his leadest pursuer through on event. Then it was off to the long jump pit, where Klech and Prentice -- as two of the better spanners in the nation -- figured to start taking over. They did.
Prentice, despite being self-critical in not exploding off the board during his attempts, still soared an event-best 23-01.25 for 823 points. Klech, who had spent limited time in the pits this winter, was over two feet short of his lifetime best, going 21-11.50 for 741 points to leave him 26 points behind new two-event leader Prentice. Then came Klech's biggest nemesis -- the shot put. At a lanky 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds, the affable teen struggled in the power event, managing a best effort well short of 34-04.75 (515 points), nearly 7 feet behind Prentice's best heave. Through three events, Prentice led 2345 to 2203. For Prentice, that was the good news. The bad news was two of Klech's best events remained.
Terry, are you ready for the high jump? "I'm hoping I can do okay. I think I'm ready," he shared.
And how about the 1k? Terry flashed a wide smile and nodded his head side to side. "That one worries me!"
Action moved over to the high jump apron, where Klech twice toyed in warmups while playfully clearing 6 feet, catching the eyes of his rivals, most of who had never cleared that height in their lives. Only six athletes remained by the time the bar reached 6-01, and that shrank to two -- Prenctice and Klech -- after 6-03.25, a level which already included Prentice's lifetime best by a fraction of an inch. Prentice raised the bar a tad higher, eventually clearing a career best 6-04.25 to tally 749 points. Then it was the Klech Show, as the bar kept inching upward, with Klech settling for a successful bar at 6-09, garnering 859 big points and shearing Prentice's lead down to 32 points with only the 1000-meter run left.
Klech shared his pre-race goal was to run 2:37, a very fine time for anyone, let alone a pentathlete. Klech, however, had already run a sizzling 1:58 for 800 meters this month to enter as the clear favorite. Despite being cut off early as the competitors jockeyed for position on the 5-lap race, Klech eventually found some real estate and then began pulling away from the field on each successive lap. With 400 meters to go, it was clearly Klech against the clock. With less than a lap remaining, he dug even further and began gapping the field by well iover 10 seconds. Then came a rush to the finish, and victory in a very fine 2:35.99. The 918-point effort sealed the pentathlon title in record score, with Prentice's 9th-place finish in the fianl event securing him the overall runner-up position (3980 to 3756).
"I haven't even touched the (intermediate hurdles race, his best event)" said Klech after the competition. "Most of my training has been base training and 800-meter type training to get my strength up, and my marks in my hurdle practices are the best they've ever been. I'm pretty excited for the outdoor season."
Prenctice, the silver medalist here, was equally optimistic after a lifetime-best 24-00 effort in the long jump this winter. "I'm just ready to go for a big year," he said.
Junior Trevor Kraychir (unattached/Bishop Amat HS) was on hand to take on the national recordholder in 25-pound weight throw, with the Southlander making his own noise as his booming footsteps echoed those of the prodigious Walter Henning. Kraychir unleashed a mammoth lifetime-best effort of 74 feet, 11 3/4 inches during the finals to become the #2 junior in U.S history in the event, but Henning (a junior from New York) stole the show with a mammoth toss that smashed the national record. Henning's heave of 83-02.50 bettered Leif Arrhenius' mark by more than four inches. Kraychir's mark left him a mere 1 1/2 inches from Lucais MacKay's state record effort of 75-01.25 achieved seven years ago.
In Saturday's dash qualifying, Southlanders Sa'de Williams and Shelise Williams (unrelated) advanced to Sunday's finals in both the 200- and 400-meter dashes. Sa'de (unattached/Rancho Cucamonga HS) won her heats in times of 24.66 (third-fastest at 200m) and 55.23 (second-fastest at 400m) along the 200 meter unbanked track. Shelise (unttached/Long Beach Wilson) qualified to the finals via clockings of 24.92 and 57.35, each ranking fourth-best among qualifiers.
