60m Hurdles

Boys 60-Meter High Hurdles
Suddenly, losing the New Jersey Meet of Champions and the Easterns doesn’t seem so bad to Corey Nelms. The Neptune senior outleaned Jamie Ryder of Toronto to win the national championship by the narrowest of margins. Nelms stopped the clock in 7.90 to Ryder’s 7.91.

Boys 200-Meter

Before the race, the announcer warned that this race may “create quite a wind.” The top four 200 runners in the nation didn’t disappoint, stirring up gale-force winds as they blew to the finish line. Trey Harts sped from the start and arrived in 21.09, which not only makes him the year’s fastest and also the fourth fastest all time. Evander Wells took second in 21.45 (having taken second in the 60 hours earlier), LeJerald Betters took third in 21.80, and JT Scheuerman rounded out the field in 21.83. Hold on to your hats, folks. By outdoor season they might be fast enough to conjure up a hurricane.

Girls 200-Meter

Bianca Knight set high expectations for her performance, and she lived up to them. Only three individuals have ever run faster than her 23.31 performance Sunday – of course she is one of them (23.26) and the other two weren’t her competitors. Knight chewed up the stagger by the first turn and was in the lead by the straightaway. In second was Jeneba Tarmoh, in 23.66. Santana Lowery came from the second section to take third in 23.93.

400

Boys 400-Meter

Put the four fastest 400-meter runners in the country together, and something impressive is bound to happen. The race opened with J.T. Scheuerman (US #2) eating up the stagger and taking the lead by the second turn. Transit Tech’s Clemore Henry (US #3) followed closely. By the 300, it was anyone’s race to win. “Anyone” turned out to be Texas’ LeJerald Betters (US #1), whose long stride carried him down the straightaway and left second place to Ronnie Alexander (US #4). Finishing in 47.09, Betters proved that we are often our own stiffest competition: Betters’ time would have led the nation, were it not for the 46.84 he ran yesterday. The other section proved impressive as well: Oregon’s Nathaniel Anderson ran the West Coast’s fastest time ever and took 3rd place overall in 47.56.

Girls 400-Meter

They don’t run much indoor track in Texas, but it certainly doesn’t show in their athletes. Minutes after Waco Texas’ LeJerald Betters won the boy’s race, Missouri City’s Brandi Cross ran the year’s best girls time. Freshman Turquois Thompson, from Long Beach, CA, went to the front at the break, and led through the 200 in 24.9. Cross came from third on the final turn to finish in 54.06, edging out Thompson, who ran 54.67. Another California freshman, Jasmine Joseph, won the other section in 54.69 and took third overall. All told, however, the eyes of Texas were upon the 400.

800

Boys 800m
The fastest entrant Nectaly Barbosa from Seattle charged to the lead early on the first lap but was closely followed by New Jersey’s Mike Pachella. After going through the 200m in 27.1 Pachella took the lead both hit the halfway split in 55.3. The New Jerseyan continued to lead opening a small gap on Barbosa and hitting the 600m in 1:23.8. But the West Coast junior displayed his superior leg speed, passing Pachella with 150m to go and holding on to win in an indoor PR of 1:52.40.

Barbosa admitted afterwards, “You always feel pressure going into the race as the favorite, but I had the confidence.” It was only his second indoor race of the season. His strategy was to lead from the gun, so he was “a little concerned” when Pachella was ahead of him in the middle of the race. Yet he held on to record the biggest accomplishment of his career, getting close to his outdoor PR of 1:51.7. Barbosa added, “I still felt a little bit of jet lag despite coming here three days ago.”

This was his first-ever race on the East coast.

Girls 800m

Samantha Gawrych of Westerly RI sprinted out from the gun, setting a blistering pace and going through 200m in 28.8 and 400m 1:01.1. The defending champion and favorite Latavia Thomas of West Catholic PA hung back early and gradually moved up through the first two laps. She finally caught up to tiring Gawrych at the 600m mark with both girls going by the bell in 1:34.8. The Philadelphia senior passed Gawrych on the outside on the last backstretch as Gawrych paid the price for the fast start. Thomas won the race by half a second in an indoor PR and nation-leading 2:07.92 as Gawrych almost got caught by a Pennsylvania sophomore Chanelle Price for the silver.

This was Thomas’s second gold of the meet as she had also anchored the sprint medley Friday. She said she actually was more tired from Friday’s 4x400m heats (where she split 55.0) than from the sprint medley, but an entire day of rest helped her almost completely recover. She admitted that on Friday she did not run all-out but simply held onto the lead to save some energy for the rest of the meet. The repeating champion said she usually runs relatively even splits and added, “When I saw the halfway split, I knew I would catch Gawrych. The individual gold means more to meher than the relay, but I am also coming back for the 4x400 finals at the end of the meet.”

Mile

Boys Mile
Feeling poorly seems to be the key to success in this meet. Saturday night, Shana Woods set a national record in the pentathlon while feeling ill, and Sunday, Dan McManamon, anything but fresh from winning the Millrose Mile, won while he was “not feeling too well.”

Farrell’s Dan Lewis led a tight pack through the 440 in 1:04.8, trailed closely by Mohammad Ige and Robert Sorrell. Sorrell took over around the 660 and led through the half in 2:11.9. McManamon was waiting in fourth, pulling up to second by the three-quarter mile mark, which Sorrell passed in 3:16.8.

Early in the last quarter, McManamon surged to the lead. Toronto’s Mark Davidson drew close behind but fell off when McManamon uncorked a blistering 28.1 in the last 220 to land a 4:16.55. Davidson finished second in 4:17.36, trailed by Sorrel in 4:18.17. Ige, Anthony LaMastro, and Matthew Shaffer finished together behind. One surprise was Chris Williams, who won the second heat and cracked into the top group, placing fourth overall in 4:18.23.

McManamon’s splits were 31.4, 33.4, 33.2, 33.9, 32.3, 32.5, 31.4, and 28.1. Reflecting on his race, McManamon said he was “feeling pretty tired” and looked forward to taking 2 weeks off after a long indoor season. He’s earned his rest.

Girls Mile

In a stunning upset, Cory McGee, an eighth grader from Pass Christian, Mississippi, took the mile national title in 4:49.32. New Yorker Kristy Longman led the race for the first five laps, but when the youngster took the lead there was no looking back. McGee pulled away and won by almost one second over Brittany Sheffey who edged Longman by just one hundredth of a second.

The 13-year old was born in Virginia, but in 2002 her family moved to Greece because her father Jim worked on the security at the Athens Olympics. When he, a 4:50 miler, went running with her one day and could barely keep up, he realized she was a major talent with a bright future.

After moving back to the States, the family settled on Mississippi’s coast where Cory launched her age-grade running career. In 2005 she competed in AAU meets and won both the 800 and the 1500 meters at the Junior Olympics in New Orleans. The latter race, won in 4:39, was her major breakthrough to the national scene.

Then a tragedy struck Pass Christian at the end of the summer. Hurricane Katrina completely wiped out the middle school and Cory had to resort to trailer education. Yet that did not stop her from starring on a one-woman team representing Pass Christian HS. After extensive training in a pecan orchard by her house, she won the state title in cross country. She also ran a 17:19 at Footlocker Regionals, a time that would have qualified for the final, but she was not eligible as she was not yet a high schooler.

This winter McGee ran a limited schedule. Before NSIC, she had competed in only two indoor meets – one at LSU and another at the end of February in Kentucky where she ran her previous mile PR of 5:02.

According to Jim McGee, Corey “wanted to run 4:40” Sunday, but he would have been pleased even with beating his own PR – which she barely did.

McGee improved her personal best by an astounding 13 seconds – a truly amazing feat for a girl who does not turn 14 until May.

McGee’s approximate 220 yard splits were 33.7, 36.3 (1:10.0), 36.1, 36.9 (2:23.0), 37.0, 36.6 (3:36.6), 36.9, and 35.8.

2-Mile

text by Steve Lurie

Boys 2 mile
Bishop Hendricken’s Tom Webb went into the lead early but after the first half mile he tucked behind Washington’s Jeff Helmer and Canadian Kyle Dekker, letting them set the pace. The trio led the pack for the entire race with even 35-second splits, hitting the half mile in 2:21.6, the mile in 4:41.7, and the mile and a half in 7:01.5. With two laps to go the pace changed markedly, with Helmer making the first move. Yet it was Webb’s kick that proved decisive as he took the lead with 250 meters left and pulled away easily. His 60-second last quarter gave him the national title and a personal best of 9:12.63, beating Helmer by two seconds.

The Providence-bound senior ran a 4:17 anchor leg Saturday on the 4x 1-mile relay but got outkicked. However, Webb said that he was not exhausted from that effort as he “did everything that the coach ordered – got a drink, cooled down, and got a massage.” He had confidence in his closing kick and only waited for the right opportunity to strike. This was the best distance race of his career, vastly improving upon his 3000m PR of 8:41. He will focus on the 2 mile outdoors as he feels that’s his best event.

Girls 2 mile
Aislinn Ryan did everything she needed to win the title for the third year in a row. She went out under control, took the lead on fourth lap, controlled the pace throughout, and unleashed her kick to claim another gold. The only competitor able to keep up with her metronomic 40-second laps was Canadian Lindsay Carson who sat on her shoulder as Aislinn went through half mile in 2:33.9, mile in 5:11.9, and mile and a half in 7:53.0. But when the former Footlocker champion dropped a 38-second 14th lap, the race was over. She ran the last quarter mile in 74.3 seconds to defend her title in 10;25.63 with Carson second and New Jersey’s Ashley Higginson third.

This was the last leg of Ryan’s outstanding triple. On Friday she anchored the distance medley in 4:48 and on Saturday the 4x1-mile relay in 4:47. Yet she said, “I took it just one race sat a time and did not try to think about being tired today.” She improved upon her winning time of last year by one second. Ryan was familiar with the Canadian from the Boston Indoor Games. Her focus will now shift to the outdoor season and the Penn Relays where she will anchor the distance medley or the 4 x 800m relay.

4x200

text by Steve Lurie

Boys 4 x 200-Meter

As the champions, Transit Tech deserves plenty of credit for a 1:28.02 performance, which puts them at #1 nationally. Monaire Thompson and Stephen McClean put Tech in second, and Tech’s Clemore Henry pulled up to neck and neck with the leading Bulldog Strider, Kevin Taley, on the third leg. The race stayed close to the finish, but Tech’s Matthew Armstrong squeezed .18 past Strider’s Markise King, who closed in a 1:28.20. DeMatha Catholic managed third in 1:28.49. No team bested 1:27.79, the nation leading time Tech ran in Saturday’s trials.

From a spectator’s point of view, however, nothing could be more of a nail-biter than the second section. The four teams, Irvington (who almost missed the race – showing up with the other teams already in their blocks), Hempstead, Barbe, and DeWitt Clinton, entered with qualifying times within .11 seconds of each other, but the tight field was quickly separated. Barbe dropped the baton during a collision between lead off man Chris Stutes and second leg Matt Garner, and on the final handoff, Irvington’s fourth man failed to materialize, causing Barbe anchor Trey Harts to have to run around Irvington’s third leg, who was left bewildered on the track. Precious time was lost by all teams in the ensuing confusion. Despite having trailed by over 20 meters, Barbe pulled closer to leading Clinton. Harts – who, having won the 200 earlier, had already earned plenty of laurels – received the baton and ran furiously.

Who won, between Clinton and Barbe, is anyone’s guess. Both finished in 1:30.55. If Transit Tech deserves the most credit as a team, no individual deserves more credit than Harts, who (unofficially) finished in an extraordinary 20.9.

Those who saw Reynaldo Nehemiah’s anchor 200 for University of Maryland in the 1979 Penn Relays found Harts’ run eerily reminiscent. Nehemiah was credited with an 18.9 split.

Girls 4 x 200-Meter

James Logan’s ladies shattered their own nation-leading time (1:37.98), getting out fast and staying that way – fast enough to achieve the second fastest time ever. The team of Tierra Ward, Kristina Davis, Tracey Stewart, and Victoria Humphrey ran 1:36.41, winning comfortably over Speed City, which came in second at 1:37.72. The nation’s previous #2, Thurgood Marshall, arrived in third.

4x400

Boys 4 x 400-Meter

If you’ve read this far, it shouldn’t provoke a gasp of surprise that NSIC produced another national leading sprint. Transit Tech’s Stephen McClean led at the breakaway, but DeMatha’s Sean Suber passed him at the 300. On the second leg, Darien Lewis from Motor City led briefly, until DeMatha’s Jaumale Sykes regained the lead and continued the duel with Tech’s Matthew Armstrong. By the last handoff, it was a three way tie. A late race challenge could not overcome Clemore Henry however, and Transit finished in 3:15.72, besting DeMatha (3:17.14) and beating DeMatha’s previous national leading. Maybe Transit has earned the moniker “Rapid” Transit. Transit’s time is an Armory record. And only John Muir HS of Pasadena, CA, has run faster and did so three times.

Transit split Stephen McClean 50.2, Matthew Armstrong 48.0, Monaire Thompson 50.4, and Clemore Henry 47.1.

Girls 4 x 400-Meter

All eyes were on Speed City for the race, but it was difficult to keep an eye on the blur. Although third at the first handoff, Speed’s Jasmine Joseph pulled ahead of Thurgood Marshall’s Candyce Cross at the 500. It stayed that way throughout the third leg.

At the final handoff, Speed City and Marshall deployed their top runners, neither of whom ran in the qualifying heats. Shana Woods of Speed City had won the Pentathalon and Brandi Cross of Marshall had won the 400. Their previous events didn’t show, however, and what had to have been a 10-meter gap narrowed to one by the finish. Speed City stayed in front, however, running 3:42.91, the fifth best all time. Marshall finished in 3:43.20, sixth fastest ever.

Speed City’s splits were Tanisha Hawkins in 57.4, Jasmine Joseph in 55.8, Turquoise Thompson in 55.6, and Shana Woods in 54.1.

Marshall split Wardsworth Cyne in 57.1, Candyce Cross in 56.1, April Washington in 56.3, and Brandi Cross in 53.7.

4x800

Suffern NY girls 8:59.37 US#2 all time

Girls 4x800 Meter

Whoooooooooosh. If you looked fast enough, you might have caught Suffern going by. Once Suffern’s Kara McKenna took the lead at the beginning of third leg, it was a lonely race for the New York girls whose 8:59.37 beat New Jersey’s Roxbury HS by more than a straightaway. In addition, the Mounties broke the 9-minute barrier becoming only the third high school ever to do so. It was also a meet record.

Suffern’s splits were Shelby Greany 2:14.8, Christy Goldman 2:19.1, McKenna 2:11.9, and Caroline Heidt 2:13.5.

Roxbury finished second with the third best time in New Jersey history (9:12.82), mostly thanks to spectacular freshman Ariann Neutts who clocked a 2:13.7 anchor. The first three splits were Ashley Cromartie 2:18.9, Sarah Tencza 2:18.6 , and Lauren Penney 2:21.6.

McKenna said, “Breaking 9 minutes was our season-long goal, so we are happy to finally do this, although the win was our main focus.” Fatigue from the previous two days of racing was a factor, but it did not stop them from beating the competition and the clock. The Mounties do not have a rigid order of legs but instead they opt to adjust it depending on the meet – that’s why McKenna did not run the anchor Sunday. They are not sure yet if they would run the DMR or the 4x800 at Penn, but whatever their choice, they will be the favorites to win it. Their eventual goal is to get into low 8:50s by the end of spring.

Boys 4x800m

Peabody MA got to the initial exchange first, closely followed by Fordham Prep’s Terrence Egan. Warwick Valley’s Pat Gallagher took the lead early on the second leg and the Purple Wave never would relinquish it. Gallagher gapped Fordham’s Matt Kieffer by almost four seconds and put the race out of reach. Michael Mark’s stellar 1:53.2 anchor assured the New York team the nation’s leading time of 7:48.42, more than four seconds faster than Shaker’s previous national best of 7:52.63.

Fordham’s Brian Doherty moved into second place early on the anchor leg and held it to clock 7:51.16. The battle for third was decided in the last few steps with Ridgewood’s Byron Williams outleaning the anchor from Dynizzle (North Penn) HS by 0.06 seconds.

Warwick Valley’s splits: Mike Segal 1:58.7, Gallagher 1:55.5, Tim Kolesar 2:00.4, and Mark 1:53.2

Fordham Prep’s splits: Egan 1:58.4, Kieffer 1:59.9, John Bradley 1:57.3, and Doherty 1:54.2

Ridgewood’s splits: Mike Cator 1:59.4, Niall Buckley 1:57.7, Jeremy Schmidt 2:01.4, Williams 1:54.9.

Mark said, “We mainly wanted to get the nation leading time, but winning the championship is even better.” The Purple Wave runners added they were confident of winning despite not having the fastest seed going into the race. Mark mentioned he prefers to chase runners, but running the anchor alone “also was good.” Warwick Valley improved more than five seconds since its Eastern States race with most of the improvement coming from Gallagher who dropped almost three seconds.

Triple Jump

Girls Triple Jump
Junior Ke’Nyi Richardson is the new national leader. She was the old national leader, too. So what else is new? The Oakland, CA, junior registered a mark of 42-2 ¼, better than her previous leading mark of 41-10 ¼. Tracy Stewart jumped a fine 41-3 ¼, third best in the nation.

National leader Gary Jones of Webster Schroeder in upstate NY added ¼ inch to his previous season’s best to win with a jump of 50-1 ¼. He won by more than two feet from Rgegie Haslom.

Weight Throw

Boys 25-Pound Weight Throw
St Anthony’s NY junior Walter J Henning had never thrown further than 81 feet in this event before this Saturday. But on that day in Maryland he got four efforts over 81 feet, including a new national record of 83.2’5. However, that was only an appetizer for Sunday’s competition at the Armory.

Henning challenged the distance limits of the New York throwing circle, almost knocking over the barriers at the far end several times. He recorded four throws better than his national record from the day before, including an 85-footer on second attempt and a stunning 85’6 on the third one.

The new champion has been throwing for several years, but he did not take up the weight throw until 8th grade. However, he did not learn the importance of proper rest and lifting weights until this season. No longer did he feel sluggish and tired at championship meets and no longer did he lack upper body strength the way he had in the past.

Focusing to peak this weekend, the 6’2, 220-pound Henning took several days easy after winning the shot at the New York state meet last week with a 58’0.5 put, eight and a half inches off his personal best. He still does all the throwing events, but he will focus on making the World Junior Championships in 6-kilogram hammer throw this summer. His personal best is 180 feet from last year, but with the improved training he’s hit as far as 210 feet in practice.

He is coached by former Manhattan College weightman John McCree – and coached well at that.

Marietta, GA, has become the girls weight throw capitol, taking five of the top seven places and six of the top nine. Emily Bernhardt led the group, winning by 1 centimeter or ¼-inch with a throw of 52-5 ½ from Lauren Chambers. Chambers shattered her own national freshman record of 47-2 ½. Eighth grader Patrice Gates was fourth with what probably is a class record of 50-5 ½.

Race Walk

text by Steve Lurie

Boys Mile Race-Walk

Race-walking must run - err… walk - in the Vergara family. Ricardo and Roberto Vergara, twin sophomores from Edinburg, TX, dominated in 6:47.83 and 6:48.21 respectively. They were joined by teammates Abraha Villarreal, who took third in 7:27.20, and Alejandro Chavez, fifth in 7:44.28. Aaron Carroll from Gardiner ME broke the Texas lock on top five, taking fourth in 7:44.28.

Girls Mile Race-Walk

New Yorkers have plenty of opportunities to walk. So it isn’t surprising nine of the top 10 finishers Sunday came from the Empire State. Senior Christina Peters led consistently throughout the race, finishing in 7:36.13. Jenna Monahan came in 12 seconds behind in 7:44.78, followed by Shani Brown at 7:55.41.
