Carter strikes gold, Noble and Ofili win bronze in Beijing - Vicky Oddi USATF

BEIJING, China - Team USA put on a remarkable performance Friday in winning three medals on a hot and steamy night on day four of the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships at the Chaoyang Sport Centre in Beijing.

2006 U.S. champion Chris Carter (Ogden, Utah) led the men's 400-meter hurdles from start to finish to claim Team USA's first gold medal of these championships in 50.08 seconds. "This is the best feeling in the world," Carter said after completing his victory lap. "It's been a phenomenal experience. I worked hard and came out here to do my best and it paid off." Carter's personal best and World Junior leading time (49.19) coming into these championships was over one second faster than any other athlete in the field.

In the women's 800 meter final, 2006 NCAA champion Rebekah Noble ran a strong race and claimed the bronze medal with her late kick, crossing the line in 2 minutes 4.90 seconds. "I'm very happy with my bronze," said Noble. "But I could have done better, I waited too long to kick." Noble's bronze is the first ever medal for an American woman in the 800m at the World Junior Championships.

Tiffany Ofili (Ypsilanti, Mich.), the 2006 U.S. champion, blasted out of the blocks and ran her way to the bronze medal in the women's 100-meter hurdles, tying her personal best time of 13.37 seconds. "I'm satisfied with my race," Ofili said at the post race press conference. "I went out there and did my best, that's all I can ask for." After falling over the first hurdle, Shalina Clarke (Round Lake, Ill.) did not finish the race. Earlier in the night, Ofili won her heat in the semi-finals in 13.47 while Clarke was second in her heat in 13.70.

Gabby Mayo (Raleigh, N.C.), who was the silver medalist in the women's 100m, took fifth in the women's 200 meters, crossing the line in 23.84 seconds. Jeneba Tarmoh (San Jose, Calif.) was seventh in 23.84.

In the women's pole vault final, 2006 U.S. runner-up Tori Anthony (Palo Alto, Calif.) took eighth place with her clearance of 3.90 meters/12 feet 9.5 inches. Walter Henning (South Huntington, N.Y.), the American junior record holder in the men's hammer throw, also claimed eighth with his heave of 71.90m/235-10. "It wasn't a big throw, but I'm happy," said Henning. "My goal was to come here and get top eight and that's what I did."

2006 U.S. Junior champion John Hickey (Piermont, N.Y.) has the farthest throw heading into the men's shot put final with his heave of 19.49 meters/63 feet 11.5 icnhes . "It was so intense," Hickey said "I fouled my first and second throws. Going into my last throw, I had to throw at least the automatic qualifier to get into the final. I went all out, I'm just happy I'm still in." Eric Werskey (Seymour, Ind.) threw 16.62m/54-6.5 in group A for 13th place in his group. "I didn't throw very well, I just didn't have any pop at the end," said Werskey.

Baylor freshman Erin Bedell (Plano, Texas) qualified for the final in the women's 1,500 meters with her sixth place finish in 4 minutes 20.67 in heat three of the opening round. 2006 U.S. Junior champion Danielle Tauro (Ocean County, N.J.) took fifth in heat one with 4:24.16. "There were some opportunities that I didn't take," said Tauro on her way off the track. "I'm a little disappointed, but it's been a long season."

In the men's 110-meter hurdles, University of Florida freshman Dennis Martin (Anderson, S.C.) and high school standout Darius Reed (Denver, Colo.) have both qualified for the semi-finals. Martin took second in his heat in 14.04 seconds while Reed was second in his heat in 13.81.

In other opening round action, Jere Summers (Oakland, Calif.), a freshman at Cal State Northridge, was seventh in group A of the women's discus with her toss of 45.95 meters/150 feet 9 inches while 2006 U.S. Junior champion Emily Pendleton (Elmore, Ohio) was ninth in group B with 46.48m/152-6. 2006 U.S. Junior champion Patience Coleman (Durham, N.C.) was ninth in group B of the women's high jump with her clearance of 1.74m/5-8.5. University of Louisville freshman Andre Black (Mobile, Ala.) took ninth in group B of the men's triple jump with his leap of 15.53m/50-11.5 while 2006 U.S. Junior champion Kali Jackson (Chicago, Ill.) was 11th in group A with 15.26m/50-0.75.

World Junior Champs, Day 4 – AM session summary
Friday 18 August 2006
Beijing, China - A compact fourth morning programme of two and a half hours of qualification rounds and the start of two days of the women’s Heptathlon, brought a now familiar name to the scoreboard of the Chaoyang Sport Centre, that of World Junior champion and multiple World Junior record breaking* Discus Thrower, Margus Hunt of Estonia.

After his exploits in the Discus final on Wednesday evening the 19-year-old Estonian, having had a day to rest and come to terms with his record breaking form, took part in the men’s Shot Put qualification. He delighted once more with a second round put of 18.95m which was both an automatic qualification for the final and a national junior record. Winning his pool (B) was India’s Sourabh Vij, the world season leader (20.35m PB), who released a 19.27m put with some ease. Also in the group, World Youth champion Jan Petrus Hoffman of South Africa easily made the cut too with 19.00m, with Lithuania’s Paulius Luozys, just slightly better with 19.08m.

But the biggest efforts came in the first group. USA’s John Hickey’s PB of 19.49m coming after two fouls, the highlight, ahead of 19m+ efforts from Kuwait’s Mohammad Mashari (19.31m) and Cuba’s Carlos Veliz (19.25m).

Australian and French success - DT and TJ

Australia’s Dani Samuels, the world junior season leader (59.44m PB) emphatically confirmed her current preeminence in the Women’s Discus Throw qualification with a 57.67m effort which was over 5.05m better than her next opponent. In the men’s Triple Jump there was a personal best for France’s Benjamin Compaoré who topped the qualifiers for the final with a 16.34m leap. In total five jumpers made it over 16m, with Hugo Chila of Equador, the best of the entrants for these championships (16.55m), the fourth best of this morning with 16.01m.

The men’s Shot Final is tomorrow (19) and the women’s Discus throwers and men’s Triple jumpers go in search of medals on the sixth and last day (20).

New height, new record - 110m Hurdles

On the track this morning, we had the opening round of the men’s 110m Hurdles, which, with new heights of hurdles (99.0cm), brought a new championship record to the fastest of the preliminary round, Greece’s Konstadinos Douvalidis. The 19-year-old European Junior silver medallist last season, took the second heat in 13.46 seconds, also a national junior record. Of the other automatic qualifiers (first three per heat) to the semi-final stage, Poland’s Wojciech Jurkowski (13.48), Jamaican Keiron Stewart (13.80), Finland’s Otto Kilpi (13.91) also established new national records which were under 14 seconds.

Dramatic but pointless sprint battle

The women’s 1500m first round was the only other individual track discipline contested this morning. Kenyan Irene Jelagat (4:15.80) got the better of Eritrean Merat Bahta Ogbagaber (4:18.10 – national junior record) in heat 3 of 3, to be the two fastest of the morning. With a titantic sprint battle down the home straight, a meaningless contest in terms of qualification as the first three of each race automatically went through to the semis, Ethiopia’s Emebet Etea Bedada (4:23.52) beat Kenyan Mercy Jelimo Kosgei (4:23.53) in heat two. The year’s fastest junior, Yuriko Kobayashi of Japan, took the first race with some ease (4:19.14).

Chernova - two PBs

The women’s Heptathlon also commenced this morning, and after two events it is world junior season’s leader (6176) and favourite Tatyana Chernova of Russia out in front (1999pts). The 18-year-old has a 94 point advantage over her nearest rival China’s Lijuan Song (1905), with another Russian Yana Panteleyeva in third with 1884. Chernova’s 100m Hurdles (13.70 seconds) and High Jump (1.80) efforts were both personal bests.

Beijing, China - A couple of proud family athletics traditions were continued tonight on the fourth evening session of the 11th edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships. And Team USA finally managed to secure gold, achieved with a very impressive performance too!

Rudisha completes a perfect set of championship races

Coming off the final bend it looked like Europe might manage a surprise title in the men’s 800m. Poland’s Marcin Lewandowski swept into the straight to challenge for the lead but just as he engaged fourth gear, his east African challengers found over-drive and that was the end of his medal let alone title hopes. Clear away instead was David Rudisha (1:47.40), followed home by fellow Kenyan Jackson Kivuva (1:47.64) and Uganda’s Abraham Chepkirwok (1:47.79) in third. The Pole managed a creditable fourth (1:48.25), but Rudisha, the son of Daniel, one of Kenya’s 1972 Olympic gold medal 4x400m relay quartet, was the man in form throughout the week, the winner of his heat, semi and now final.

Cristea times it perfectly unlike the opposition

In the women’s two lap final, Moldova’s Olga Cristea did what Lewandowski couldn’t quite manage in the men’s 800, bringing Europe a middle distance gold. Her turn of speed in the finishing straight was unstoppable, and its reward was her season’s best of 2:04.52, enough to beat off the challenge from Kenya’s Winny Chebet (2:04.59 PB). A late, badly timed run by USA’s Rebekah Noble took third (2:04.90). It is quite possible that if the prodigiously talented American (coming into these champs with a 2:02.07 PB, the world junior season’s lead) had been closer to the leaders at the bell, we would have been standing to the USA national anthem and not that of Moldova later in the evening.

Estonia secures third gold

Incidentally at this point in the night (about 1900 local time) no American had yet won a title at these championships – incredible – and with no contestant through to the men’s 200m final that was not going to change with the next event on the track either. In any case it won’t be long now before we know how to hum the strains of the Estonian national anthem, as well as that of the USA. Bringing home the Baltic nation’s third title in Beijing was Marek Nitt in a national junior record of 20.96.

Ukraine’s Dmytro Ostrovsky had actually crossed the line first in 20.89, but was subsequently found to have stepped out of lane and so was disqualified. As Nitt moved up to gold, Canada’s Brian Barnett (21.00) ascended to second, and Britain’s Alexander Nelson skipped up onto the podium in 21.14.

High Jump Qualification…

Keeping the Estonian theme going, Viktoria Leks was the equal best athlete of this evening’s automatic (1.83m) qualifiers for the women’s High Jump final on Sunday (20), with China’s Xingjuan Zheng also having a perfectly clean jumping card.

Sprint double for Naimova

It was fast becoming Europe’s night in the Chaoyang Sport Centre, as five minutes later Tezdzhan Naimova of Bulgaria made it a sprint double taking the women’s 200m in 22.99 seconds, a personal best. If we just mention simply that Vanda Gomes of Brazil (23.59) and Poland’s Ewelina Klocek (23.63 PB) took the silver and bronze, and say nothing more, this should not be taken as a lack of respect to either minor medallists. This final was not a race in the true sense, it was an exhibition of Naimova’s sprinting prowess during which she destroyed the opposition.

Carter provides USA with gold at last!

Finally, the fifth track final of the night brought some respectability to the USA delegation in China. From the sound of the gun Chris Carter put the men’s 400m Hurdles gold into his pocket with a powerful but controlled display of hurdling. Ahead from the second flight Carter was never headed winning in 50.08 seconds. The world’s fastest junior of the season (49.19), during a brief trackside interview after the final immediately declared that he would be taking a two year sabbatical after the 2007 season and so would not be competing here at the 2008 Olympics, and that his focus was on 2012.

>>Editor's note - thanks to all who pointed out my major error regarding Chris' parentage. It would have been great to have said I was "just testing you" but I have a feeling you wouldn't believe me. So let's just put it down to the heat here in Beijing! So keep reading, if only for the laughs, though none this AM I promise as I'm taking the morning session off! Second tonight was Saudi Bandar Shraheli (50.34 PB) with Ukraine’s Stanislav Melnykov (50.43) taking the Bronze. There was a Dutch national record for Daniel Franken (51.08) in fifth.

Shtepa eases her way to gold

But American luck didn’t hold out for long. In the next and last track final of the evening, the race of April Williams in lane four - American favourite for the women’s 100m Hurdles and the season’s fastest (13.35) - fell apart at the penultimate flight of barriers. Easing fluently past in the two lanes outside the American were Russia’s Yekarterina Shtepa and Christina Vukicevic of Norway. The Russian crossed in a world junior lead of 13.33 - a personal best - with the Norwegian taking silver (13.34) in a national junior record. She had set her previous PB of 13.45 when qualifying for the final as the fastest of the semi-finalists at the start of the evening.

Shtepa, who will celebrate her 19th birthday on 25 August, is the national junior champion this year, setting her previous best of 13.34 at the time (21 July in Tula).

Zhou’s gold but the world will hear from Volik again

Russia missed out on what prior to these championships had seemed a likely gold medal in the women’s Pole Vault. 16-year-old Valeriya Volik, who set a World Youth best of 4.40m in Kazan on 8 July, the best performance by a junior this year, could go not better than 4.10m tonight. There is no doubting that we will hear a lot more of Volik, who is coached by Yelena Isinbayeva’s former trainer, Yevgeniy Trofimov.

Up at the sharp end of the final tonight was China’s Yang Zhou who won gold with 4.30m, with a Slovenian national junior record of 4.25m securing silver for Tina Sutej, and 15-year-old Vicky Parnov of Australia, the niece of 2000 Olympic silver medallist Tatiana Grigorieva, taking bronze (4.20m).

Round two decides gold

Throwing second of the twelve finalists, Russia’s World Junior record holder (82.60m)* Yevgeniy Aydamirov took gold in the men’s Hammer Throw with a second round 78.42m release. Not that the 18-year-old would have felt very confident in that position at the time, as just nine throws later Hungary’s Kristof Nemeth released a 78.39m effort. These two performances ultimately took the top-two medals but with the Hungarian hitting 78.33m with his next and 77.16m and 77.00m on his fourth and fifth attempts there was always a suggestion of a possible upset on the cards. None came, and with a 77.06m heave in the penultimate series of throws Slovakia’s Marcel Lomnicky set a new national junior record for bronze.

Of the rest of the field, there were also national junior records for Belarussia’s Yury Shayunov (76.95m, 4th), Dakai Qi of China (75.97m, 6th), and Walter Henning of USA (71.90m, 8th).

Russia stands 1 – 2 overnight

At the end of four events, Russian Tatyana Chernova continues to lead the women’s Heptathlon. She could not manage to continue the run of PBs which she established in this morning’s opening two disciplines, as her Shot Put of 12.18m (673pts) was somewhat off her PB of 12.26 set in Kazan on 8 July this year, but she was back in career best form in the final event of day one, with a 200m clocking of 24.05 seconds (976pts). PBs were set in both these events (13.35 – 751pts / 25.03 - 884pts) by her compatriot Yana Panteleyeva who lies in second place overnight (3519pts), with Norway’s Ida Marcussen (13.68 – 773pts / 24.72 – 913pts) in bronze (3480) having PB’d throughout the day.
