Mayo and Belt win silver in Beijing - Vicky Oddi for USATF.org

BEIJING, China - Gabby Mayo (Raleigh, N.C.) and Antone Belt (Berkeley Springs, W.V.) won the first medals for Team USA on day two at the 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships at the Chaoyang Sport Centre in Beijing.

After a roughstart, 2006 U.S. Junior 200m champion Gabby Mayo had a tremendous finish to claim the silver medal in the women's 100 meter final, inching out Carrie Russell of Jamaica who took third, both with a time of 11.42 seconds. "I'm very happy I got second, it's so exciting," said Mayo. 2006 U.S. Junior champion Alexandria Anderson was fifth in 11.49.

Antone Belt, a freshman at the University of Louisville, brought home the silver medal with his personal best leap of 7.95 meters/26 feet 1 inch. Belt sat in second for most of the competition until gold medalist Robert Crowther of Australia, who had been sitting in third, surpassed Belt on his fifth attempt, pushing him into third position. Belt immediately responded with his best leap of the night which put him back into the second position, where he stayed for the remainder of the competition.

2006. U.S. Junior champion Tori Anthony (Palo Alto, Calif.) advanced to Friday's final in the women's pole vault with her clearance of 4.0 meters/13 feet 1.5 inches. "I am so excited," Anthony said of her performance. "I had two goals: to make the final and to set a big personal record. One down, one to go."

In the men's hammer throw, American junior record holder Walter Henning (South Huntington, N.Y.) hit the automatic qualifier on his third attempt with his heave of 71.51 meters/234 feet 7 inches to advance to Friday's final. "I was trying to get it (the automatic qualifier) in the first round," said Henning. "But I'm not disappointed. Knowing that I am in the finals, I can sleep good tonight."

Both Chris Carter (Ogden, Utah) and Joe Greene (Geneva, N.Y.), the 2006 U.S. Junior champion and runner-up respectively, will move on to Thursday's semi-final in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Carter won his heat in 51.49 seconds while Greene placed fourth in his heat in 52.75. "I felt tired, but my performance was good," said Carter. "I did what I wanted and I felt strong." In the women's 400m hurdles, 2006 U.S. Junior champion Nicole Leach (Philadelphia, Pa.) won her semi-final heat in 56.10 to move on to Thursday's final.

2006 NCAA champion Rebekah Noble (Spokane, Wash.) crossed the line in 2 minutes 5.56 seconds in the women's 800 meter semi-final to place third in her heat and qualify for Friday's final. It the first time an American has ever advanced to the final in the women's 800m at the World Junior Championships.

2006 U.S. Junior runner-up Justin Oliver (Stone Mountain, Ga.) took second in his semi-final heat of the men's 400 meters in 46.22 seconds while 2006 U.S. Junior champion Jessica Beard (Euclid, Ohio) was fourth in her semi-final heat of the women's 400m in 52.97. Oliver said, "It was a good race, I ran smart at the end. I feel good about tomorrow." Both Oliver and Beard advanced to their respective finals.

Also at the track, 2006 U.S. Junior champion Adam Montague (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was ninth in group B of the men's javelin with his heave of 66.30 meters/217 feet 6 inches while Oregon freshman Matt Maloney was 18th in group A with his throw of 57.76m189-6. In the men's steeplechase, 2006 U.S. Junior champion Cory Thorne (Portsmouth, N.H.) was 14th in heat two in 9:24.10 and Georgetown freshman Alex Mason (Scottsdale, Ariz.) was 17th in heat one in 9:51.61.

Brittany Parker (McKinney, Texas) cleared 3.80 meters/12 feet 5.5 inches for 11th place in group B of the women's pole vault. Shannon Leinert (Gainesville, Fla.) placed fourth in heat one of the women's 800m semi-final, crossing the line in 2:07.67. Quentin Inglehart-Summers (San Antonio, Texas) was fifth in heat three of the men's 400m semi-final in 47.04 while Brandi Cross (Missouri City, Texas) finished fourth in heat one of the women's 400m semi-final in 53.25.

Ebony Collins (Los Angeles, Calif.), the 2005 World Youth champion, was eighth in her semi-final heat of the women's 400-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 60.70 seconds. University of California freshman Jake Schmitt (Kentfield, Calif.) was 17th in the men's 10,000m, finishing in 31:38.22.

World Junior Champs, Day 2 – AM session summary
Wednesday 16 August 2006

Beijing, China - The second morning session of the 11th edition of the IAAF World Junior Championships got underway in hot and humid conditions at the Chaoyang Sport Centre.

Oosthuizen- impressive qualification

Despite the oppressive warmth there was a stiff breeze blowing in the direction of the finish line which while offering some physical comfort for the athletes in the men’s Javelin Throw qualification round - which commenced the morning’s programme - caused some technical problems especially for the first group of athletes. Thus it was no surprise that six of the eight athletes who were able to manage the automatic entry level for the final (70.00m) came from the second pool of throwers.

Struggling for his first two attempts by his usual standard was world season leader Ari Mannio of Finland who had to wait until a 74.17m third effort to proceed to the final. Ultimately it was to be the second best mark of the morning and topped Group “A”. By contrast John Robert Oosthuizen’s opening 78.42m which secured top spot in the “B” pool was a beautiful release - the second best of his career - and had the South African already changing back into his tracksuit for the rest of the day as the official’s were measuring his effort.

Britain’s James Campbell produced a lifetime best on his third throw of 73.18m to become the third furthest thrower of the morning, while eleventh of the qualifiers, Leslie Copeland of Fiji, set a national junior record (69.62m).

Volik - qualfied

What for the spearmen what was a tricky headwind was a potentially even worse cross wind for the women’s pole vaulters in their qualification round at the opposite end of the stadium where they approached the uprights across the top of the infield jumping fan. Thankfully though the vaulters found themselves com competing near enough to a small spectator tribune to be largely sheltered from the wind by the stadium wall, and as such eleven of the twelve finalists for Friday’s final (18) made the automatic qualification of 4.00.

Of the finalists, Russia’s Valeriya Volik, 16, the World Youth record breaker, who is slated to be the next Isinbayeva, took her first three heights on the first try (3.80, 3.90, 3.95) and made 4.00m on her second approach. With a clean jumping card through four heights (3.60, 3.80, 3.95, 4.00), was the qualification leader Ling Li of China.

Slow paced races

In the intense heat, the 400m Hurdles heats were taken steadily by the athletes, with the Netherlands’ Marius Kranendonk (51.40) the fastest of the first round winners. The men’s 3000m Steeplechase opening round was also contested with Willy Rutto Komen of Kenya the best of two equally conservatively paced races.

Garcia on top after three events

In the men’s Decathlon, after two events China’s Hengjun Zhu (1750pts) has the lead after a 10.91 100m and a 7.23m Long Jump. Back in sixth is the current world season junior leader, Arkadiy Vasilyev of Russia (1702). World Youth champion Yordanis Garcia of Cuba was the fastest overall in the 100m (10.80 seconds) but a 6.80m Long Jump which while near his PB (6.86) wasn’t up to the ability of his older opponents, and left him in overall eighth (1673).

The situation changed dramatically back in Garcia’s favour after the third event, the Shot Put, when he powered his implement to a new personal best of 16.51m (883pts), the best put of the competition to give him overall first place (883pts). Vasilyev, put the next best mark (15.65m; 830pts) for second, with Jordan Vandermade of New Zealand, third (2532pts) thanks to 10.86 second, 7.16m, and 14.97m efforts.

Championship record in Hammer

There was one major upset in the men’s Hammer Throw qualification as World Youth champion Sándor Pálhegyi failed to make the cut for the final, however there was better news for his Hungarian compatriot Kristóf Németh who was the best of Group “A” with 73.86m. Leading the qualifiers was Yury Shayunou of Belarussia whose 76.76m effort was a new championship record.

World Junior Champs, Day 2 – PM session summary
Wednesday 16 August 2006
Beijing, China - On the second evening of the 11th IAAF World Junior Championships, Margus Hunt twice improved on the World Junior record* of 66.35m which he had set in yesterday morning’s opening session, first propelling the men’s Discus to 66.68m in the fourth round of the final and then improving once more to 67.32m with a last giant effort.

Before yesterday’s qualification round the 19-year-old Estonian had a season and personal best of 64.32m which made him the second best of the contenders for the World Junior crown. Tonight Hunt stands as the World Junior record holder and World Junior champion, having left the old world standard of Egypt’s Omar El-Ghazaly (65.88m, 7 July 2003) consigned into deep history.

Hunt had the gold secured with his opening effort of 64.96m. The nearest to approach the him this evening was Iran’s Mohammad Samini whose 63.00m was a national junior record for silver. Germany’s Martin Wierig (62.17m) took bronze. This final was in reality an Estonian master class in discus throwing to which the other eleven competitors were merely privileged spectators.

Naimova’s title, as Anderson misses out on a medal

Bulgaria’s Tezdzhan Naimova upset the hopes of USA’s Alexandria Anderson, the fastest junior in the world this year (11.12), with a smooth acceleration after 40 metres which took her into the lead past Jamaica’s Carrie Russell with 40 to go, and to the line in 11.28 seconds (-0.8m/s) for what was an emphatic victory in tonight’s women’s 100m final.

Anderson, the fastest of yesterday’s semi-final winners, was never properly into today’s race and finished 5th in 11.49.

As the gun fired it was Russell, in lane 3, who took the early initiative, and she remained in that position until Naimova’s attack outside her in lane 6 reached full momentum.

With a late run, Gabby Mayo brought some compensation for USA creeping past a fading Russell to snatch the silver on the line with the same time as the bronze medallist (11.42).

Naimova’s form had on reflection been disguised by the fact that she was a slower semi-final heat winner than Anderson, her true speed in her 11.53 victory yesterday hidden by a -1.8m/s wind, the strongest headwind of the round.

Perie and Aikines-Aryeetey turn World Youth titles into Junior gold

A second round 67.38m was enough to secure Romania’s Bianca Perie the gold in the women’s Hammer Throw, and establish a new Championship record for the reigning World Youth champion. In fact, throwing sixth of the twelve finalists, the Romanian was in the lead from the very first round, her 62.80m the best of the opening efforts as well.

China’s Shuai Hao, throwing second, momentarily took the lead in the second round with 63.02m prior to Perie’s throw, was then overtaken by Russian Anna Bulgakova’s third round release of 65.73m, and another set of throws later was out of the medals in fourth, when Moldova’s Zalina Marchiev produced 63.24m on her fourth attempt.

However, Hao made a successful last ditch effort on her sixth throw and snatched back the bronze for China with 64.26m, and that’s how the medal positions finished…Perie, Bulgakova, Hao.

The men’s 100m final was late-off by about 5mins from the planned schedule but there was nothing sluggish about Britain’s Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, the reigning World Youth champion, who sped to his season’s best of 10.37. Nothing looked secure for the Briton until 5 to 10 metres before the finish when he first got his barrel chest in front and secured a two-hundredths’ of a second win over Justyn Warner of Canada in silver.

China’s Jiahong Liang who was to finish 5th (10.43) had battled for the lead in the middle of the race with the Briton, Canadian, and Jamaica’s Yohan Blake (bronze 10.42) and Remaldo Rose (fourth 10.43) but slightly faltered at the end to miss the medals.

The Briton, who very politely puts up with the fact that nearly every one of his countrymen let alone the rest of the world have difficulty pronouncing his family name, had a previous best of this year of 10.38, though his lifetime fastest is the 10.35 which he ran in 2005 on his way to his Youth title.

Fifth round flurry gains Crowther gold

The men’s Long Jump final came alive competitively, though not for the hopes of the home crowd, in the fifth round when Australia’s Robert Crowther bounded out to an Area Junior record of 8.00m, with USA’s Antone Belt responding immediately with his personal best of 7.95m.

Suddenly, China’s Xiaoyi Zhang who had been leading since the first round with 7.84m and had improved to 7.86m, found himself down in third place. And with fouls for both Belt and Zhang in the sixth, and Crowther declining his final effort, that’s how it remained, gold for Australia, with an inconsolable Zhang, the World junior season’s leader, left crying in despair on the side of the runway.

In fourth place, Iran’s Mohammad Arzandeh’s 7.67m effort was a national junior record.

Gashu’s guarded approach garners gold

With 1000m to go and the Chinese Longyun Ren at last dropped off the leading pack, the men’s 10,000m final came done to a group made up of Africans and a duo of Bahrainis. Doing much of the front work was Kenyan Joseph Ebuya, and with him ‘every now and then’ was Eritrea’s Samuel Tesfamriam. However, while covering all possible breakaways attempted by his opponents, doing his best to remain anonymous was Ethiopia’s Ibrahim Jelyan Gashu, the fastest junior in the world this year.

Gashu left his attack to the latest possible moment, putting his nose in front of Ebuya, who had led at the bell, with approximately 40 metres to go to the finish, holding on to a margin of a couple of metres for a 28:53.29 masterly timed triumph.

As he crossed the line, Gashu fell to his knees in prayer. Who ever he was directing his thoughts to, there was no doubt his timing was heavenly.

Ebuya’s 28:53.46 in silver was a personal best, with national junior records for the next three home, Bahrain’s Aadam Ismaeel Khamis (28:54.30) in bronze, Tesfamriam (28:58.09) fourth, and Abraham Niyonkuru (28:59.92) of Burundi in fifth.

Qualifying rounds…

Looking particularly good in the qualification rounds this evening were Britain’s Martyn Rooney (46.01 – 3rd semi-final) in the men’s 400m, but also taking comfortable semi-final heat wins was, for Trinidad and Tobago, Renny Quow (46.18 – 2nd race), and there was a good double header in the opening heat which was taken by Japan’s Yuzo Kanemaru (46.06) from Belgium’s Jonathan Borlee (46.08 – PB).

World Youth champion Nawal El Jack of Sudan qualified well in the women’s one-lap, in her season’s best of 51.84 seconds, though the fastest semi-finalist of the day was Jamaica’s Sonita Sutherland (51.67).

Zambia’s Racheal Nachula’s 53.05 clocking was a national junior record though it failed to move her into the 400m final as she finished third in her heat behind Russia’s Kseniya Zadorina, who with 51.94 was the third quickest this evening.

Another Zambian junior record, this time in the women’s 800m semi-final stage was good enough to progress Elizet Banda to the final (2:05.57) as a fastest loser. She was third in her heat behind Olga Cristea of Moldova (2:04.76) who with her season’s best was the fastest of the qualifiers. In the men’s 800m Kenya’s David Rudisha (1:47.24) continued his progression as the fastest, just as he had been in yesterday’s preliminary round.

The best of the women’s 400m Hurdlers was Nicole Leach of USA with 56.10 which won the first semi-final heat. This event is going very much to season’s form, as the American with 55.35 is the fastest of the entrants, and the second and third quickest of 2006, Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer and Ajoke Odumosu of Nigeria, were second (56.11) and fourth fastest (57.00) this evening. Upsetting the form book slightly was Sudan’s Muna Jabir Adam whose 56.55 was the third quickest overall, and a national record.

In the Decathlon standings after five events, World Youth champion Yordanis Garcia continued his terrific display of this morning with a 2.04m High Jump, and a 50.19 second run in the 400m tonight. Both marks were personal bests. The Cuban’s halfway total is 4202pts, ahead of New Zealand’s Jordan Vandermade (4180), and Russia’s Arkadiy Vasilyev (4109).

Sami Itani of Finland was the best of the Decathlon High jumpers with 2.07m, while Britain’s Daniel Awde was the fastest of the multi-eventers at 400m (48.96m).
