2003 Bob Mathias Fresno Relays LARGE SCHOOLS - 4/5/2003 - Warmerdam Field - Exciting tie on the Girls side in this meet, with Stockdale and Clovis West both ending up with 60 points, with area rival Clovis close behind with 60!! Clovis West Boys winners over Buchanan on the Boys's side with 81-71 totals!! Girls - Golden West (Visalia) sprinter Christina Lopez, a junior, shows to be real with solid 12.40 100 and 25.58 200m wins (no wind readings). Jessica Laslovich (Buchanan) 5:11.19 1600 win and Brittany Grimes (Centennial) 11:16.32 G 3200 victory (by 200 meters!). Clovis West fine 48.61 G 400 Re, with some good action in the field--Ashlee Marshall (Stockdale) 18-07 LJ (nwi) - Tonisha Smallwood (Mt. 2003 Fresno Relays Small High School Meet - 4/3/2003 - Serra (Gardena) from the Southern Section, with a much improved Girls team this year, came into the Central Section and swept both team titles here. Some great marks abounded, with Zack Ryan's 7-0 B HJ (the State's first 7-footer this spring!!) a real surprise from Garces HS in Bakersfield, with Kira Costa (Memorial, Fresno) adding a 12-07 G PV and Artensia Young (Serra, Gardena) a fine 39-07 TJ. The results did not include any wind-readings, so we do not know the record possibilities of some of the efforts. Artensia Young was all over the place for Serra, with a 15.06-15.07 hurdle win over Kira Costa in the G100Hm, with a fine 39-07 GTJ win, with her school's relays (400-49.37) and (1600-4:11.15) racing to huge wins to fuel their 110 point total. Kimyon Broom (Serra) added a good 46.10 300mLH win. The Serra Boys group had Paul Franklin (400 winner 50.61) along with huge relay wins (400-43.84) and (1600 - 3:28.95) on the way to 75.5 points on that side.

Alicia Veiss (McFarland) had a fine Girls distance double 800-2:24.25 and 1600 -5:24.00, with Sylvia Medrano (Exeter) a good 11:22.49 G3200 win. Natalie Friesen (Immanuel, Reedley) had an 18-01 GLJ win for another fine effort on that side of the meet. Yosemite (Oakhurst) senior Fred Worstein had a good 100-200 sprint double, racing 10.95 (wind unknown) and 22.30 (same wind situation). Paul Staggs (Memorial, Fresno) added a distance double, racing 1:59.56 (800) and 4:38.10 (1600), with McFarland's Victor Zavala a 9:45.25 3200 victory. Russel Zulim (Immanuel, Reedley) took the High Hurdles (15.24) and BLJ (21-05). Chris Ballard (Wasco) had a fine 45-00 BTJ win, with Chris White (Garces, Bak) 56-11.5 (SP) and 171-04 (DT) efforts.


2003 Bella Vista Bronco Track and Field Invitational - April 5 - Boys - Latrell Kidd (Elk Grove) won a big showdown with Gerrell Cain (Bella Vista) in the 400 48.30 to 48.79, with Kidd also taking the 200 (22.65 (wind -0.7) and Cain the LJ (22-02.5). Some other good action, with Tim Martin (Cordova) 1:58.04 in the 800, Austin Ramos (Jesuit) 4:02.89 1500, and Eric Huggins (Stagg, Stockton) 14.92 (+1.5 wind) 110mHH. Ryan Shuler (Granite Bay frosh) was 14-00 in the Boys PV, with John Fausett (Tokay, Lodi) 49-02.5 SP and 169-00 in the Discus. Kidd the Track Athlete of the Meet, with Fausett the Field winner! Girls side had Raenisha Roots (Stagg, Stockton) 59.86 400, Katie Hartman (St. Francis, Sacramento) 2:21.14 800, Natasha LeBeaud (Folsom) fine 4:43.86 Meet Record 1500, and Cecily Lemmon (Vacaville) 10:38.36 3000m wins! Corrie Baer (Casa Roble, Orangevale) had fine horizontal jump double of 17-03.75 LJ and 37-11.5 TJ. LeBeaud Track Athlete of Week and Baer taking the field honors!


Hornet Invitational - Enterprise HS (Redding) 4/5/03 - David Nichols of host school big School and Meet Record 180-05 in the Discus, with 58-00.5 SP win, with teammate Kenny Frank a 1:58.28 800m Meet Record run. Liberty Christian's Tim Nelson (4:18.94 Meet Record 1600m) and Phil Curiel (50.02 400) had fine victories. - On the Girls' side Janessa Hoppe (Enterprise) was a distance doubler (5:18.02 1600 and 11:43.86 3200m), with Nelle Pharris (Paradise 15.66 (100mH). Claire Miller (Shasta, Redding) added a 38-06 SP win.

Covina Relays - Azusa Pacific University - Sat 4/5/03 - (SS) - Amazing Triple win performances individually were the highlight here, with UCLA bound Joe Cowan (St. John Bosco, Bellflower) a 49.27 (400), 22.60 (wind? - 200), and 40.71 (300mIH) triple winner along with Erik Maldonado (Don Lugo, Chino) 1:56.0 (800), 4:20.8 (1600), and 9:20.90 (3200)!! Maldonado was given the Male Athlete of the Meet Award. Johnson (Claremont) 22-01.5 LJ and the PV duo of Steve Rybacki (Damien, La Verne) and Albert Boele (Temple City), with 14-06 efforts were the other Boy Highlighters. - Girls side had Jaymie Ambos (Rialto) Athlete of Meet with a distance double of 5:16.5 (1600) and 11:28.4 (3200). Mary Ong (Alhambra) 39-02.5 (SP), Topaz Marcos (Upland) 5-04 (HJ), Brittani Bernhard (West Covina) 11-08 PV, Tara Davis-Quarrie (St. Lucy's, Glendora) 12.08 (wind? 100m), Adonica Shaw 37-02.25 (wind? TJ), and Courtney Evans (South Hills, W Covina) 24.93 (wind? 200m) were other strong performances on the Girls' side!


THUNDER INVITATIONAL AT ROCKLIN HS 04/05/03, with the host Rocklin team the Girls' winners with 153 over Woodland's 124. Aaron Tombleson (Woodland) junior fine 56-05.5 and 161-03 weight double winner for the Boys'. On the track (we assume hand-timed) Evan Stevenson (Woodcreek, Roseville) 10.9 100m, Marcus Shepard (Mira Loma, Sacramento) 49.2 400m and fine 23-00 LJ (wind?), Brody Van Koten (Fairfield) 1:58.9, and Fairfield relay double winners 44.1 400m and 3:27.0 1600m. Girls had Nomatas strong at the short end, with the school's Faunn Davis 15.4 100mH, Natomas 49.9 400m Re, and Arren Garner 12.6. Double winners for Rocklin in the Girls' field action, with Ashley King 15-09 LJ and 35-01.5 TJ, and Liz Parsley 38-06 SP and 105-07 DT. Kiescha Fontenot (Woodland) added a 5-02 HJ.

Another day at the ring as Billie Jo moves to #5 AT US with 182-02 Discus win in San Luis Obispo County Meet!!! Top weight duo in California and Prep US History in one year? - Dawn Dumble and Melisa Weis (Bakersfield HS in 1990) tough to argue with - Dumble 50-11.75 SP and 171-02 DT Bests - Weis 49-02 SP and 176-10 DT bests that year - something to aim at!!

San Luis Obispo County Championships - Arroyo Grande HS - 4/5/03 - Billie Jo Grant (Arroyo Grande) 182-02 (#5 AT US - #3 AT Californian) in Discus - Megan Howard (AG) 46-06 SP, with Boys weights Lewis (AG) 56-04 SP (and four over 54 feet for the school!) with Lewis also 177-01 to take the Discus (and three from AG over 170!!) - Monica Pacas (Atascadero) 12-08 PV, with teammate Kacey Lundgren 12-04 close behind!! Arroyo Grande dominates the team contests!!


Falcon Relays - Torrey Pines HS (Encinitas) 4/5/03 - San Diego Section - San Pasqual (Escondido) frosh Lizzy Karoly opened some eyes with a dominating 12.1 100m win over a good group here, where she took down Kaitlyn Doe's Meet Record of 12.4. Doe, a Torrey Pines athlete, took the LJ here at a fine 18-04.5 Meet Record. Lorin Scott (San Pasqual) was the G 1500 winner at 4:46.56, with Torrey Pines Girls 4x800 relay win at 9:51.2, and Morse (San Diego) a 50.5 G 400m Relay victory. Boys' action was headlined by Morse's Demetrius Westbrooks, with the mid-24 jumper a 23-05 Meet Record leap to win here by nearly three feet! Daniel Schaerer (Bishops, La Jolla) added another fine Discus effort at what is one of the State's friendlier venues with a 173-03 effort. Morse was a 43.9 400m Relay winner on the Boys' side!


Talented Reid Family of Rio Mesa - Lauren (frosh 19-02w LJ this day) - Phillip - Senior on of the nation's top distance runners - bit of speed work with a 1:54.5 800 leg this day!!

Rio Mesa HS (Oxnard) Spartan Relays - Sat 4/5/03 - (SS) The 17th annual Spartan Relays took place on April 5th under chilly and blustery conditions at Rio Mesa HS in Oxnard. Twenty-six teams took part in the meet. All events at the meet were run as relays, even the field events, where the best marks of each of three athletes from a school were added together for a total distance or height. Although the cool and windy conditions were reflected by slower than usual times in the running events, there were a host of noteworthy performances. Rio Mesa senior Phillip Reid split 1:54.5 on the anchor leg of the BV 4x800, and his freshman sister Lauren soared a windy 19’2” in the LJ. The Boys varsity team competition was hotly contested, with Rio Mesa pulling off a narrow victory over a deep and talented Moorpark squad, which won the throws and horizontal jumps relays. Rio Mesa was also the winner in the Girls Varsity division, and the Spartans claimed titles in both F/S divisions as well. All in all in was a fun day that stressed the team aspect of the sport, with over 1,000 medals awarded to the participants.


Beaumont Cougar Classic - Beaumont HS (SS) - 4/5/03 - (TEAM SCORES CORRECTED 4/7) Host school's Brian Baker a good 4:32.7 (1600) - 9:33.1 (3200) distance double. Jason Eiker-Wiles (Carpinteria) 14.9w and 40.1 hurdle double, with Aaron Finrock (Arrowhead Christian) TJ 44-09w and Ed Connell (Burroughs, Ridgecrest) 148-00 DT. Girls - Shelese Ruffin (Beaumont) 25.7w (200), 60.1 (400), and 16-00w (LJ) wins, with Kierstin Ferguson (Webb School, Claremont) 125-02 DT.


Chabot Relays High School - 4/4/2003 - Chabot College - Hayward, Ca - Jack Welch (Redwood, Larkspur) had a fine 4:24.75 1600, with Billy Wills (Antioch) a 51-06 Shot Put win. Zach Buchanan (Benicia) had a 13-00 Pole Vault. Erika Walker (Redwood) had a 16-11.5 nwi Long Jump win.


Johnny Mathis High School Invitational - 4/4/03 - Cox Stadium - San Francisco State University - Soph Chauncy David-Jacobs (Burton, San Francisco) with a strong Girls long sprint double 25.89 (200m) and fine 57.68 (400). Hayward Boys added a quick 43.42 400m Relay here.


King City Invitational - 04/04/03 – San Benito (Hollister) swept the team titles here--Boys/Girls Varsity and Boys F/S - Top Boys efforts were in the weight events, with Matt Lugo (Salinas) 46-02 in the Shot and Matai Wooden (Overfelt) 153-00 in the Discus. Girls action was good in the field, with Noami Ruiz (San Benito) a 133-00 DT, Mairlyn Mahlke (Overfelt) 36-05.5 SP, Trisha Frudden (King City) 16-05 LJ, and Stephanie Starritt (San Benito) 10-02 PV.


Cerritos Girls Invitational @ Gahr High, April 5, 2003 - Diana Rosete (Estancia, Costa Mesa) with an 11:36.22 3200m win, and Maria Magdelano (St. Paul, Whittier), one of the section's most improved runners, with a solo 5:10.05 1600, were the high-lighters of this Girls' only meet at Gahr HS sponsored by Cerritos HS.

2003 C.C.S. Frosh-Soph Track & Field Classic - Los Gatos High School - Fri 4/4 - Very strong distance efforts featured this 9th/10th grade meet for CCS Athletes! Ciara Viehweg (St. Igmnatius, San Francisco) raced to a 5:06.07 100 meter win at the 1600 meter distance, with Alicia Follmer (Saratoga) a big break-through to a 10:56.28 3200 that had her win by nearly 50 seconds!! Nathan Huerta (North Monterey County, Castroville) was 4:29.33 for 1600m, then returned to lead teammate Keli Parker in the 3200 with the duo racing 9:46.96 and 9:49.46. Scott Robinson (Santa Clara) was 51.93 for 400 meters, with Amber Kaufman (Branham, San Jose) 17-06.5 in the Girls LJ (wind unknown).


Capital Athletic League Track and Field Center Meet 2 Results (4/2/02) - Bella Vista HS (Fair Oaks) - (SJ) - Gerrell Cain (Bella Vista) took the Boys Varsity 100 (11.4), 200 (23.3), and the LJ (21-09.5), but it was not eough to stop a fine Casa Roble (Orangevale) team from taking the team title 172-141 in this six-way meet at the fairly new Bella Vista facility. Dan Guidera (Del Campo) 13-00 PV, and Brandon Latiker (DC) 50-08 (SP) and 142-08 (DT) were others with good marks. On the Girls side, the host Bella Vista squad swamped the competition, scoring 232 to Casa Roble's 83. Rio Americano's DeLoney (HJ 5-01), Corrie Baer (Casa Roble) LJ (16-09.5) & TJ (36-02), and the host's Brysun Stately PV (10-06) had the other top efforts.


Chino Relays - Citrus College - Sat 3/29/03 - LB Poly running wild!! Poly Boys 41.5 400m Re, 1:27.8 800m Re, 3:16.0 1600m Re, 7:59.1 3200m Re!! Girls 45.7 400m Re, 1:37.1 800m Re, 3:44.7 1600m Re, 9:25.4 3200m Re, 1600m Sprint Medley 4:14.2!! On the Field Shana Woods (Poly) 18-06.75 LJ, Stephanie Graves (Poly) 37-06 TJ, and Kendra Lilly (Poly) 41-07 SP--wow!! - Some other teams did contribute to a fine meet in a strong way. Don Lugo (Chino Hills) 10:31.4 B Dist Med and 17:54.1 B 4x1600 Re. Sultana Girls excellent 21:21.8 G 4x1600 Re and 12:45.6 G Dist Med Re. Priscilla Gardner (Mission Viejo) 143-08 G DT. Corcoran Invitational - Sat 3/29/03 - Corcoran HS - Central Section - Some fine efforts graced this Central Section affair. Excellent marks in the field for Jackson (results list him from Golden West, Visalia but we believe South, Bakersfield) B LJ 23-00.25 (over three foot win!! - second 19-05), Lashay Bagsby (South, Bak) 5-07 Meet Record G HJ, and Jennifer Ward (South, Bak) 42-05 MR G SP. Junior Christina Lopez of Golden West continues her fine season of sprinting, with a 12.2 win over highly regarded Britney Bennett of Centennial. Centennial had A and B Teams in the Girls 400m Re, clocking 50.2 and 50.7. Ryan Moore (Redwood, Visalia) added to the fine section depth in the hurdles with a 39.2 300mIH Large Schools win.
