The Reid's!! - Frosh Lauren - 19-02w - Phillip - today 1:54.5 800m Relay leg!! (Brian Fitzgerald photos) The 17th annual Spartan Relays took place on April 5th under chilly and blustery conditions at Rio Mesa HS in Oxnard. Twenty-six teams took part in the meet. All events at the meet were run as relays, even the field events, where the best marks of each of three athletes from a school were added together for a total distance or height. Although the cool and windy conditions were reflected by slower than usual times in the running events, there were a host of noteworthy performances. Rio Mesa senior Phillip Reid split 1:54.5 on the anchor leg of the BV 4x800, and his freshman sister Lauren soared a windy 19’2” in the LJ. The Boys varsity team competition was hotly contested, with Rio Mesa pulling off a narrow victory over a deep and talented Moorpark squad, which won the throws and horizontal jumps relays. Rio Mesa was also the winner in the Girls Varsity division, and the Spartans claimed titles in both F/S divisions as well. As always, the coaches’ 4x100 Relay was a highlight, with a young Lompoc staff cruising to victory. Hawthorne’s coaches were expected to contend for the coveted title, but, unfortunately for the Cougars, their ever-fragile anchor man, head coach James Swain, pulled a hamstring warming up and never made it to the track. All in all in was a fun day that stressed the team aspect of the sport, with over 1,000 medals awarded to the participants. Results for the Varsity Division were as follows: GIRLS VARSITY TEAM SCORES: 4x100 HH: 1. Rio Mesa- 1:14.2 2. Agoura – 1:15.4 3. Hart –
