11 new national leaders, including:
Newburgh NY 1:28.54 4x200
Shana Cox 24.08
Natasha Hastings 24.51 in lane 4 appeared to have made up some of the
stagger on Cox in lane 5 through 150 meters, but Cox powered off the last
turn to win without an argument through the stretch.
Mike Morrison 7-3
The Willingboro NJ sr boomed over on his third attempt with plenty of
room to spare to the delight of a packed Armory crowd. After going down
to his third attempt before clearing 7-0, Morrison raised the bar three
inches and again missed his first two attempts. Then, Morrison soared
over in a perfect arc and the crowd's rhythmic clapping turned to a roar.
Brian Dalpiaz 4:14.52
Sayville NY sr appeared all the way back from his emergency appendectomy
last August as he outkicked Kevin Tschirhart to win impressively in the
fastest mile this year in the US. Tschirhart was second in 4:16.77. Chris
Pannone rallied to win a 3-way fight for third in 4:19.72. Dalpiaz led
for the first few laps with a 4-way single file lead group consisting
of Dalpiaz, Jeremy Zagorski, Brian McCabe and Tschirhart. Tschirhart moved
to the front at the end of the sixth lap, but Dalpiaz stuck on his right
shoulder until striking quickly on the backstretch of the last lap.
Natasha Hastings 53.80
A.P. Randolph NY star spotted Eleanor Roosevelt MD sr Tiandra Ponteen
55.07 a big lead through one lap in 24.4, but burst from behind in the
last 100 meters to win in the stretch. William Penn PA sr Juanita Broaddus
was third in the seeded section in 55.82. Willingboro NJ Okechi Ogbuokiri
won the second section in 55.05 to claim second overall. Hastings ran
the fastest 400 in the nation this season and the 11th fastest on Jack
Shepard's all time indoor list, where Hastings already stands 6th. "I
was a little worried (after one lap)," Hastings said, "but I
stuck to my plan and hit my target time right on the nose."
Trotter twins 4:55.42 and 4:55.54
Bayshore NY soph Laura Cummings blew out to a big early lead and was still
out there as the bell rang for the last lap. But Katy and Amanda Trotter
had moved up to second and third and kicked as a team in a sizzling last
lap. The Trotters caught Cummings in half a lap and won going away to
place 1-2 on the 2003 indoor season rankings. Cummings held on for third
in 4:58.33 US#5 and Heather Iatauro was fourth in 5:02.80 US#6. Cummings'
big lead eliminated the expected battle of the twins -- the Trotters of
New Jersey and the Mullens of New York -- as the Mullens were never in
contention.
