It certainly has been a special 2006 Track and Field season, with the excitement and fireworks generated in the Girls distance events with this year's group of flyers having us all glued to watching the oval when this crew steps out!  When the dust has settled just before the State meet Mike Kennedy's yearly four lap 1600m distance list has seven young ladies who have run under 4:50 for that event, an extraordinary number!!  We naturally wondered if there had been any other year in California history with a group so strong, and when we ran it by Mike, who has kept the Girls National statistics for Track & Field News on the Girls' side for a couple of decades, he said he was inclined to doubt it.  I certainly wanted to research it, and Mike suggested a close look at the early 1980's.  Many distance fans talk about "the good old days, when runners were runners and all...................."  Well, after all the still standing prep Girls Mile (4:35.24 by Polly Plumer (University, Irvine) has stood since 1982, with Jeff Nelson's two mile prep best of 8:36.3 around since 1979, so there may be something there!  After some research through Jack Shepard's old high school annuals, there were a couple of years with six girls who had run under 4:50 for the event, but only one year where there were seven Golden State prep ladies under the 4:50 barrier for the four lap metric event.

1983 What a Year For Golden State Female Distance Runners!!

Don Gosney caught the finish of the Girls State 1600 Finals
at
the 1983 competition - pick a winner!! Cory Schubert (left)
from Del Mar had a magical season that year and was the winner
here at 4:44.93 to the 4:45.00 for Julie Seleine (University, Irvine)
far right, and the 4:45.02 for Paula Bresnan (Kennedy, Granada Hills)

It turns out that 1983 was another of those spectacular years in the sport in an event area, with it the only other year that seven prepsters on the female side were under the 4:50 barrier for the 4 lap event.  And what a year it was, with the top three finishing within .09 at the State meet 1600 behind winner Cory Schubert (Del Mar, San Jose), a long, powerful striding runner who came back to take the 3200 in 10:08.14 (a meet record).  Schubert earlier in the season had set the national prep 3200m record at 10:04.2, with the 10:08.14 clocking taking down Vickie Cook's Meet Record at state of 10:12.31.  Fifth place at the 1983 State 1600 was 4:49.66!!

Bresnan (3rd 4:45.02) - Schubert (winner 4:44.93) - Seleine (2nd 4:45.02) and
Jennifer Abraham (Foothill, Santa Ana) 4:49.66 - what a group!!

the 1983 crew: (thanks to Jack Shepard for use of his 1984 HS Annual) - want to buy 2006 version?
List for a mile back at that time, with the seven below converting under 4:50 for 1600m
4:45.56+ Paula Breshnan (Kennedy, Granada Hills)
4:45.60+ Cory Schubert (Del Mar, San Jose)
4:46.67+ Julie Seleine (University, Irvine)
4:48.42+ Nanette Garcia (Silver Creek, San Jose)
4:48.91+ Gladees Prieur (Le Lycee Francais, L.A.)
4:49.7 Tanya Fischer (Chamindade, Canoga Park)
4:51.36+ Jennifer Abraham (Foothill, Santa Ana) (Abraham 4:49.66 1600m converted from the 1983 State meet)
