Nick Robinson (El Toro)
As one of the nation's most improved athletes, Nick Robinson of El Toro has made the jump from a fine regional athlete in the weight events to near the top of the national lists, sitting #5 in the U.S. in both the throwing events as of early may with a Shot Put Best of 63-01.5 and Discus PR of 197-00! He has had some very impressive consistency during the spring season, and is bound for UCLA next year, where he will join the super weight squad of Coach Art Venegas. Below Nick took the time earlier in the season when he first broke out to answer some questions on his throwing for us, and we are pleased to present them below. With the big meets of May ahead and some great competition locally and statewide, it should be an exciting close to Nick's senior year, with some great action for all of us to follow!! Doug Speck US NATIONAL HS LISTS OUTDOORS (JIM SPIER
- NSSF AS OF 5/3) Others: Discus 1. Super start to 2006, much of a surprise, or had training shown the potential for such good early season efforts? My training showed the potential for early season success thanks to the help of Steve Bolton, Len Blutreich and Chris Watkins. Coach Bolton, who is now my throws coach at El Toro, helped me when I first started throwing in the middle of my sophomore year. Coach Bolton deserves most of the credit for me being where I am today. Coach Bolton introduced me to Coach Blu, Concordia’s throws coach, who helped me over the summer till November of last year. Coach Chris, Mission Viejo’s throws coach, helped me during the summer and last years Junior Olympics. 2. What other sports have you done along the way during high school or before? Other sports that I played during my high school career were football, freshman and sophomore years, basketball, freshman and sophomore years, and baseball, freshman year. 3. What are the components of your Shot and Discus form that you are particularly working on, or that you have changed as you go into your senior spring season? The components of my shot and discus technique that Coach Bolton and I are working on are throwing my hips around and finishing tall. 4. What was behind the decision to sign at UCLA? It was a long-term goal to attend UCLA. When the opportunity came up it was an easy decision to make. 5. What are some of your goals down the road this spring? My goal this season is to reach State in both shot and disc. 6. Where do you see yourself in ten years? Right now my long-term goal is to achieve success at UCLA. 7. What advice would you offer to someone who is new to the weight events and maybe out for track and field for the first time? I would tell them what Coach Bolton has told
me since the day I met him, “Throw far and don’t foul.” |
